“It depends on which part of the resort you choose”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

By the time we got to Split Rock we had read all the reviews and were more than just a little bit concerned about what lay ahead. The potholed entrance road, rough parking lot, and appearance of the Galleria (where you check in) didn't help. But, the check in process went smoothly. The staff was friendly and helpful, and we set out for our building.

We were over in the newer section -- Willowbrook. Our room was excellent. It appears to be fairly new and the public areas and rooms were all first class. Our one bedroom suite (separate living and bedrooms) were similar to what you'd find in a Residence Inn or Homewood Suites. Everything in the place worked. The room was quiet and comfortable. The bed was great, even though the mattress pad was thicker in the center, so that toward the edges you were tilted just a little, All in all were quite happy.

We were booked for a week, but we ended up leaving early. This wasn't due to any problem with the facility. We just ran out of anything to do. We don't play golf. It was really too cold to face water sports. So, we toured around the area and that doesn't take long. If you're looking some where to go and play golf while the kids do their thing at the water park, then this place would be fine for a week.

Most of the poor reviews below deal with the older buildings. You may want to keep that in mind if you're booking here.

Room Tip: Stick with Willowbrook.

Thank you for your comments we are happy to hear that you were pleased with Split Rock. It was unfortunate that the weather has been a bit cold for the lake area. We hope that you will come back next year and see us again when the weather is warmer.

This resort (Split Rock) has multiple timeshares/unit types within it. This review applies only to The Galleria.

The Galleria is in the main building. We were on the third floor, in a two bedroom, two bath unit. The extra bedroom is a lock out. Oddly, the extra bedroom’s window is on the hallway. The extra bedroom is not near the outer wall. The main bedroom and living room had windows in the traditional sense.

I suspect some of the timeshare units had only indoor windows, meaning no windows may have opened to the outdoors. It seems like there was a block of units that were on the inside. We walked around the hallways, and some of them were clearly interior.

You can tell the resort is older, but it was comfortable. It had a full kitchen, free in-room wifi, a DVD player.

What is rather nice is that The Galleria via a series of hallway and connecting buildings, has access to a weight room, massage suite, indoor basketball court, pool tables, game arcade, movie theatre, laundry room, indoor pool, bar, restaurant, pizzeria, etc. You didn’t have to go outdoors. All the things, but the pool, cost.

An indoor water park is right next door. That you would have to go outdoors to access, but it is a very short walk, and adjacent to the main building.

To enter the gated community, you have to pay $1 at the gate each time. I was told if you kept the receipts, you could use it towards purchases. We prefered to pay $10 for a pass that allows as many ins and outs as you want during the week. It has a barcode on it that you hold up to a reader so you can go in the gate to the right, not the one with the security guard. If you don’t return the barcode pass, they’ll charge you $25 in all, but if you return it, they only charge $10.

In the evening you can expect to see deer.

We took an enjoyable pontoon boat ride on the nearby Lake Harmony.

One thing we didn’t like about the resort: the front doors. They don’t automatically open so if you have lots of suitcases, coolers, etc. it is very hard to hold both doors open at the same time as you are trying to move suitcases and/or luggage racks. Once you get through the first two doors, you have to get through another set. Very awkward. The doors didn’t have stoppers you could put down so they would stay open. As soon as you let go of a door, it closed up on you.

We were there before the season, so it was pretty quiet. As far as we could tell, there is just one elevator so I imagine it could get busy during the season.

Room Tip: Make sure to get room that is on the outside of the building.

We had high hopes for this location as we had always wanted to visit the Poconos. The first thing we noticed upon arrival was how impressive the front lobby was. The check in process was easy and the front desk staff was friendly and helpful. This was most of our positive experience at this location. We headed up to our room on an elevator which we weren't sure would make it. Most of the time the door wouldn't open when you arrived to your floor and you would have to manually press the "open door" button in order to get off the elevator. Once we arrived to our floor we noted an ordor that smelled musty and it continued into our room. The room was a fairly decent size, but some of the furniture was in pretty bad condition. The main sofa sunk down in the center and was quite difficult to stand back up from. The fabric was torn in several locations. The flush broke on the toilet the 2nd night, but my husband was able to fix it. One of the bulbs in the bathroom was out which meant in order to see you had to use the light from the heat lamp. Not the best lighting to put on makeup. We decided to try the restaurant on site, the Smokehouse Grill. We were quite impressed with the breakfast and the chef who made the omelettes did a great job. We liked it so much we decided to have dinner there that night. What a terrible meal. We opted for the prime rib special for $26.95. The rolls on the salad bar were quite hard, but the vegetables looked decent and fresh. While we waited for our meal, we could hear the cook screaming from the kitchen. There were maybe 8 or 9 tables in the entire restaurant and three or four wait staff so I couldn't understand why the need for screaming. When our meal came I was disappointed the prime ribs were medium and we had ordered medium rare. My husband was too hungry to send his back, but I sent back mine only to be given one that was ice cold in the center section and rare. Also, this had to have been the worst cut of prime I had ever seen. There was a section of fat that took up more than 25% of the cut. When the waitress asked how the second was I told her it was undercooked, but we didn't have time to redo and we would finish cooking up in our room. She made some sort of sad face, but never offered to have a manager speak with us or adjust our bill. Our waitress brought our check without asking about dessert so it was clear she wasn't into making money for this establishment. We went out the next morning and picked up groceries so we wouldn't be tempted to eat at the resort. We sent an email yesterday to managment regarding the bad meal we had, but haven't heard anything back. WATERPARK: The next big disappointment was the waterpark. Thank goodness we didn't prebuy several days as my husband and I paid almost $40 to purchase two twighlight passes which were good from 4 to 7 pm plus we rented a locker for $6, but we only lasted 45 minutes. This would be a fun place for really little kids as there are only a few big rides but lots of smaller water areas for little ones. Since the only thing I was looking forward to were the rides and the hot tubs, and only one of three rides interested us and all the jets in the hot tubs but one were broken, it made no sense to stay. We decided to head off to the indoor pool at the resort which is connected to the waterpark. It was there that we discovered the jets in the hot tub at this location were also broken. I have since read several reviews on this location going back to the end of 2013 and saw multiple reviews which referenced the tub jets being broken. Really?? How can you advertise amenities and never keep them in working order? We did find the fitness center to be nice and enjoyed the bowling. The fee to bowl is $8 per person per game so we didn't bowl for long. We have decided to check out early as almost everything here comes with a fee and we really don't want to give this resort any more of our money. We have been timeshare owners since 1999 and have traveled all over the country staying at many timeshares. This one is sad because it appears the owners have decided to just let it go and represent it as so much more than it is in its current condition. If this place were maintained and updated, it would have so much potential.

Suite was nice, bed was old, hard and uncomfortable. Stains on the bathroom ceiling. Poor lighting in bathroom made it difficult for her to put on her makeup. Bring a bathrobe and beach towels, they are not provided. Food was very good at the smokehouse grill. By the way, it costs a dollar every time you enter he resort.

We were here during a long weekend in February when it happened to be snowing. The snow removal and salting basically ends where the county road ends. There is a reasonably long private road (I think). We were driving on more than two inches of snow for pretty much two whole days. We saw so many stuck cars through the two days - 2-wheel drive minivans mostly.
Now onto the resort. The parking lots were a complete nightmare. Cars stuck all over the place,

PROS
- the resort has a decent-sized indoor waterpark and there's no doubt that kids will have fun
- it is cheaper than other for staying overnight - at least for that long weekend
- the apartments are approx a mile from the waterpark but they are very spacious. Kitchen has enough equipment, heaters are individual and they work.

CONS
- the main resort lodge entrance area was a mess on the long weekend. wet areas everywhere (my toddler slipped once), very crowded lobby. parking was a mess, overflow parking was snowed in
- for the long weekend the number of lockers weren't enough
- food options are minimal but that's to be expected
- no towel rentals - again, to be expected
- nearest restaurants are 5+ miles away

I've heard other users talk about the Great Wolf Lodge chain that is supposed to be higher-end but many people might be priced out.

Having read a bunch of reviews after I made the reservations, I was really concerned. We went with very low expectations and were blown away. My husband and I were given a one-bedroom suite with a full kitchen, living/dining room, separate bedroom and large bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub and a balcony overlooking the golf greens.

Our children and grandchildren had a 2-bedroom suite booked but were given two adjoining and attached apartments just as I described, which meant 2 full kitchens, etc. We were amazed. The building was spotlessly clean with lovely public lobbies on each floor.

We loved the indoor water park. My kids said it was cleaner than another resort they had been to last year in New York. Bowling was a lot of fun. There were amazing hiking trails and bicycle trails a short drive away. We ate breakfast and lunch in our apartments and went off-premises for dinner and came upon a restaurant that would rival any 4-star restaurant in Manhattan. We stayed 4-nights and really enjoyed ourselves.

The sociology was mixed but the values appeared to be the same. Every family we saw took great pleasure in the joy and excitement their children were experiencing.

Room Tip: I spoke to customer service in advance and asked what they would charge me for an upgrade because I...

We had stayed at Westwood Villa's a 2 bedroom, Livingroom, full kitchen & 3 bathrooms. We checked in April 11, 2014 & stayed for a almost a week.My husband myself, son daughter-n-law & grand baby. Let me start of by saying I was scared to vacation at this resort because of all the bad feed back. I was pleasantly surprised check in at Westwood was meet by 2 wonderful pleasant ladies who checked us in. We drove to our villa & it had a new kitchen, living room & bedrooms was a little out dated. but lots of time shares are. We did have flat screen t.v.'s which is a plus.We asked for 2 pressure gates seeing it was a two floor villa & we had a 11 month old. Service came with it in less than 10 minutes. The water pressure & hot water in showers & sinks was wonderful. The villa was very clean. The back deck was very nice over looking a golf course. We enjoyed the indoor pool very clean. We did not use the indoor pool in the Galleria. We wanted a more quiet pool by the beach..Our grand baby first time in a pool & she loved it. We ordered Pizza & wings from the take out Pizza place in the Galleria. It was very good.My grand daughter loved the playground at the resort. We enjoyed the Pocono's very much. Going to a few indoor markets. Our family trip was a success. Very happy we went. I think if you go around looking problems you will find that at any resort. We love to rent from timeshares because it has more room. Hope this helps. Enjoy where ever your vacation takes you.
