In my opinion, one of the biggest selling points for The Secret Garden B&B is how close the lovely old row-house is to downtown Lancaster.* This meant that after a day of touring Lancaster County, we could park, make our way to one of the restaurants in the city, have a few drinks, and then stroll back to bed. But the Secret Garden works hard to please, in its own right. The rooms are spacious and charmingly hand-decorated. The proprietors are as friendly as you could possibly wish for; we found them sitting on the porch when we got back in the evening, eager to chat, ask after our day, give advice, and tells stories about themselves and the area. (They gave some excellent advice on things to see and do in Lancaster.) Breakfast was served at nine and quite good. They readily accommodate dietary restrictions (be sure to let them know if you don't like your food well-salted!), and no guest is ever served the same meal twice. Grace is said over the meal, the proprietors retreat, then re-emerge as you're finishing up and their general love of conversation wins out. The Secret Garden also has a kitchen for guests, with a small fridge for leftovers; a stand at the top of the stairs with snacks, books, and magazines. There is in fact a garden in the back, complete with a miniature pond and several places to sit. Overall, we had a great stay, felt very well cared for, and would recommend this B&B.
*Regarding downtown: if you can make it to the Central Market, definitely do!
