The Dutch Wonderland is A Great Place For Kids! It is advertised honestly, and any intellegint person should be able to see it is geared more toward children, who's parents find joy in seeing those little smiling faces! I have lived in Newark, DE for years, recently moving to Lancaster, PA, and the Dutch Wonderland has only been about an hour away. Whenever I took any or all of my children to this great little treat for them, I felt really great to see the excitement on their faces! We've been to much larger parks throughout the country, not to mention outside of the United States. The Dutch Wonderland is not trying to compete with these "muli-billion dollar parks"! It is what it is, and does not deserve bad reviews from people who did not take the time to do their "homework" before going!

We spent an evening at Dutch Wonderland with our 8 and 9 year old children. We were glad we only paid the discounted evening prices, because we were disappointed in the place. They advertise themselves as an amusement park for kids up to 12 years old. Mine were much younger than 12 and they thought most of the rides were too babyish. Thank goodness for the rollercoaster and the flume, the only two "exciting" rides in the park. I think this would be a great place for pre-schoolers, or for children who get scared by more thrilling rides, but our two grade-schoolers were looking for more.

Dutch Wonderland is really a nice, simple amusement park for families with small children. Rides include a kid-sized train ride, boat ride and skyway (that each meander through the park), two roller coasters (one kid sized and one toddler sized), some do-it-yourself types (a nice change of pace from the big parks), great bumper cars and other kid/fair type amusements (trucks, small ferris wheel, the "Space Shuttle", etc.).

The shows are scaled-down, but professional enough. We were pleasantly entertained by a humorous diving show and a band made up of college kids having almost too much fun. The Dutch Wonderland Princess gave Disney's Cinderella a run for her money! Our 2 and 5 year old girls were quite satisfied with their royal encounter (which is saying a lot)!

There is a small water park area that is clean, manageable and well-contained for younger children. Kids over 8 or 9 would probably be bored, though. During our visit, a child (not ours) had a potty accident. The management closed the entire water area, drained and sanitzied the water, re-tested everything for safety and then let everyone back in. We were pleased by the attention to safety and sanitary conditions.

The staff was energetic, if not young (average age of employees was 16 or 17). We were always addressed courteously and ride attendants were properly attentive and concerned about safety.

DW is a throw back to a simpler era when playing together was more important than the rides on which the family was playing. We loved that parents could participate in almost everything -- or wave to the kids from a few feet away while they giggled with glee. Nothing is in-your-face -- and everything was good clean family fun.

The park is not without its flaws. First, it is old. A fresh coat of paint would go a long way towards improvement. Second, the place needs a good scrub down. My daughter noticed many cob and spider webs on rides. I noticed some trash (but, not so much that it ruined the experience). Also, technical sound difficulties was disruptive during the princess read-a-story-aloud show. The food was sub-par (fruit salad had to be returned for a refund because it was rancid) -- but, there is a kosher food stand for those who care. Prices were fair - except for soda ($1.69 for a small/$1.99 for a not-so-large cup).

We took advantage of coupons from the PA welcome center ($2 off per ticket). And, they have a nifty preview program: Arrive three hours before closing time to buy your ticket for the next day - and get in for those three hours free. It was great to bring the kids in - stay for a short time - and then tell them we would be back the next morning.

At $20 for kids and $24 for the adults (with the discount) - it was truly a great value and definitely worth the 4 hour drive. Our DW/not DW (not "D"isney "W"orld) trip will be a cherished memory for a long time to come.
