Owner description: In 1954, the play, “Plain and Fancy” was a smash hit on Broadway. The Broadway hit drew a spotlight as the play was featured around the Amish lifestyle and their home: Lancaster County. This was the tipping point of a tourist boom the progressively grew from 25,000 annual visitors to 2,000,000 by 1960. Due to the increase of tourists and invasion of privacy of the Amish, Lancaster-local Adolph Neuber believe that there should be a place to accurately learn about the Amish, while respecting their privacy. An Amish family opened their home and property to visitors for tours. Since 1955, The Amish Farm and House has been connecting the Amish community and the public. The house was nice but the bus tour was even better. The bus's a/c was not good on a hot and humid day but we survived :)

The tour ladies were very knowledgeable! I would recommend it to everyone and anyone.

You seem to get the party line about the Amish here. We went on a Sunday after noon and did the house tour and then went for a drive after words. On the drive we saw things that didn't quite go with what we were told about the Amish. But is was a nice place to visit and get an understanding about their history and what they are about.

I think this is a great place to begin your Amish Country experience. The tour guides are well informed, and it was cool to see an Amish house. However, once you make friends with and end up visiting a real working Amish family-this can not compete. I also found the massive Target (I Love Target) a distraction. This is not a must see, but it's good as a start.....
