Owner description: In 1954, the play, “Plain and Fancy” was a smash hit on Broadway. The Broadway hit drew a spotlight as the play was featured around the Amish lifestyle and their home: Lancaster County. This was the tipping point of a tourist boom the progressively grew from 25,000 annual visitors to 2,000,000 by 1960. Due to the increase of tourists and invasion of privacy of the Amish, Lancaster-local Adolph Neuber believe that there should be a place to accurately learn about the Amish, while respecting their privacy. An Amish family opened their home and property to visitors for tours. Since 1955, The Amish Farm and House has been connecting the Amish community and the public. Tour Lancaster County’s Amish Farm and House. Opened nearly 60 years ago, The Amish Farm and House has hosted travelers from around the world visiting Lancaster County. “Nice way to learn about the Amish”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

It was hard to find, tucked into a Target parking lot with poor signage! It would have been nice to have a little more enthusiastic tour guide, luckily we had already taken a 90 minute bus tour and learned a great deal about the Amish and enjoyed the countryside.

scdak: Thank you for your recent visit to the Amish Farm and House. We apologize for the lack of signage on Route 30. It is not our fault. The local township, East Lampeter Township, refuses to allow us to put our sign back along the roadway. We try our hardest to inform people of where we are, but the lack of sign does hurt a little. We tell people to use Target as the landmark. We are right beside it! We're glad you found us and enjoyed the bus tour. It's a great way to see the real Lancaster County. We hope you come back and see us again soon!

“What A Great Place”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

I took a group of 16 seniors here and everyone loved it. The docent we had was knowledgeable, friendly, funny and charming. She took us to various rooms in the house and told us about Amish clothing, cookery, daily activities and much more. Then she took us on a 90 minute bus ride around the area pointing out interesting homes and more. We saw Amish families out for a stroll too. When we got back we walked around the place using a great map and guide that they provided. We saw animal, a 1 room school house and more. Loved this place. GO!!!

Cburdman: Thank you for your recent visit to the Amish Farm and House! We're glad you enjoyed both the house tour and Countryside Bus tour. The "Premium Package" is the best way to see Lancaster County. We're also glad that you and your group enjoyed the visit to the farm, the schoolhouse, the woodcarver, and everything else we have to offer outside. It's a hidden gem tucked behind the modern world. Come back and see us again soon. There is always something new here at the Amish Farm and House!

“Inspiring!”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

We only had a half day in Lancaster wedged between a 3 hour ride and a concert at the York County Fair. The combo tour of the Amish Farm, House, and Garden was everything we could ask for! (reasonably priced too) We learned and experienced so much in those 3 hours. It IS odd to drive into a Target driveway to access the farmhouse, but seeing the horse parking area truly shows how the two cultures blend. The tour guide for the HOUSE (45 minutes) was very nice and informative. The 90-minute bus tour was packed with information. Our bus driver truly knew about the Amish culture as his neighbors were Amish. The COUNTRYSIDE was beautiful and I will always remember the vision of the sweet children playing outside at the many one-room schoolhouses! The self-guided tour of the FARM was relaxing. Don't miss the schoolhouse, tobacco barn, and woodcarver. I was so intrigued with the Amish culture that I purchased a few books in the well-stocked gift shop. A must-do in Lancaster!

“Wonderful overview of Amish Country”
Reviewed 18 September 2013

This is exactly what we needed. Went to Amish country on a Sunday when all stores, and stands run by Amish, were closed, and looked for a non tacky place to get a feel of the community. The Amish House and Farm was perfect. We took the House guided tour and then the bus tour of the surrounding area, During the house tour we were given a brief history of the Amish people and some perspective on how they run their lives. We heard about the current practices, the clothes they wear and how they intermingle with the "English " community . We then took a 90 minute bus tour on a small 16 person bus. The driver explained how to pick out an Amish homes, and discussed their livelihood. We also had the opportunity of seeing many Amish individuals enjoying their Sunday horse and buggy rides. A delightful day.
Great way to see Amish Country especially if you only have a day to do it.

Adriannest: Thank you for your recent visit to the Amish Farm and House! We're glad you thoroughly enjoyed your visit to our property as well as Lancaster County. As you know, our tour guides are thoroughly knowledgeable about Amish culture. They love answering questions and explaining the lifestyle with which they are so very familiar. We believe we offer the best tour with the best tour guides. Thank you too for doing our much-sought-after bus tour. Even though you visited on a Sunday when all the Amish business were closed, you probably got to see more Amish out and about than you would have during the week. Come back and visit us again soon. There is always something new to see and learn here!

“Interesting to see how the Amish live”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

Initially I was surprised that the tour of the Amish house was lead by a non-Amish lady, then I realised that this was an advantage because you could ask any question about the Amish without risking offence or embarrassment. It was an interesting visit and the guide was very informative, we enjoyed learning about this group of people. Looking around the farm was also very interesting and good to see the woodcarvings etc. then to Target for a coffee. Afterwards our coach tour took us around some Amish farms and houses, also vey interesting. Not every bodies cup of tea as we heard from other members of our group, but we enjoyed learning about the Amish.
