Fort Ligonier is a must see attraction for history fans. Located in a small town, this museum has one of the most impressive collections I have ever seen, with a real emphasis on quality. Case in point- pistols given to George Washington by Lafayette. I also loved the portrait gallery. The exhibits are very informative. The fort itself is amazing- an authentic replica of the original. This part is hands-on and extremely child friendly. We witnessed costumed guides interacting with school groups. The students were given wooden guns and drilled; later they had an opportunity to try out the soldiers' beds. As the group left, they were chanting "We love history!" Now that's the way to make history interesting! Fort Ligonier is well worth the price of admission- do not miss this wonderful attraction!

We have been to many historical places, but Fort Ligonier is among the best. This fort was important in early American history and even played a role in world history leading up to the Seven Years War. This area, along with Jumonville which is close by, was important to the early military career of George Washington. The museum has some great artifacts including pistols belonging to Washington and personal papers written by Washington recalling his early years in the military.

We have visited Fort Ligonier many times. We took our children every year we came to Ligonier to visit family. They were able to sit on top of the cannons and absolutely loved the area where battles were fought. It is the perfect history lesson with fun included. There is a fantastic museum inside and if you are ever here for Fort Ligonier Days there are war reenactments at the Fort. The museum shop has many interesting items for young and old alike.

The fort is an excellent replica of the original fort. All of the buildings have authentic-looking furniture with figures dressed in the uniforms of the day. Eight acres of the original site of Fort Ligonier have been preserved, with the subsurface features restored and the above-ground elements reconstructed. The inner fort is 200 feet square, defended by four bastions and accessed by three gates; inside is the officers’ mess, barracks, quartermaster, guardroom, underground magazine, commissary, and officers’ quarters. Immediately outside the fort is General Forbes’s hut. An outer retrenchment, 1,600 feet long, surrounds the fort. Other external buildings include the Pennsylvania hospital (two wards and a surgeon’s hut), a smokehouse, a saw mill, bake ovens, a log dwelling and a forge.
