“Alden House is a Wonderful B & B in Lititz PA (Lancaster County)”
Reviewed 11 July 2006

Alden House is located on Main Street in Lititz, PA, a small, historic town only a few miles from Lancaster County’s Amish area. The house dates from the mid 1800s, and some of the neighboring buildings along Main Street date back to the mid 1700s and have a rich history.

The innkeepers, Bob and Shirley, are gracious hosts, and make you feel like a member of the family. The rooms are immaculate, and each is distinctively decorated with antiques and family photographs. There are plenty of books and magazines available in each room. The suites have a sitting/TV area in addition to a comfortable Queen size bed. There is a side porch where you can watch the Koi in their pond, or relax and read.

Breakfasts include an incredible choice of juices, fresh fruit, a delicious entrée, meats, assorted breads, and a dessert, all served attentively by Bob, while Shirley makes occasional visits from the kitchen, where she does all the cooking herself. All of Shirley’s breakfasts are outstanding. Alden House entrées are wonderful, including quiche, baked egg dishes, crepes, omelettes, and more. Homemade desserts include delicious puddings, cakes, and pastries. Recently, we especially enjoyed her German Stollen and Bluberry Brickle with Whipped Cream. Local ingredients are used in a variety of dishes, and all are very well prepared.

Both Bob and Shirley are very familiar with the area, and can offer some unusual sightseeing ideas, in addition to the familiar Amish destinations. Since we have been visiting regularly for many years, they have been able to find some new and unusual places for us to visit. Every visit has been memorable, and we are looking forward to our next visit, which will be very soon!

Alden House Bed and Breakfast is definitely the best place to stay when in the Lancaster area. It is located on Main Street, which is loaded with interesting shops and places to eat. We have stayed at Alden House enough times to have had the pleasure of staying in all the rooms. Each one is unique, beautifully decorated, and spotlessly clean. The innkeepers, Bob and Shirley, are incredible. They are very knowledgeable about the area, and can suggest fun places to visit as well as fabulous restaurants. They spend alot of time chatting with their guests, and never make you feel they are in a hurry to get on with their own business. Shirley is a wonderful cook, and when she prepares breakfast, "ordinary" is not in her vocabulary. She is always surprising us with an interesting dish, accompanied by a fruit appetizer, scones, muffins, or toast, and assorted jams or jellies. Bob recites an unbelievably long list of juices, there is definitely something for everyone! And no where else will you get dessert after breakfast, but you will at Alden house --often some kind of delicious cake. After staying just one night, you will feel like part of the family, Bob and Shirley are such warm, caring people. Another great feature is that they have their own parking behind the inn. Alden house is very centrally located, tourist spots and restaurants very accessible. The outlets in Lancaster are an easy twenty minute drive, as are the fabulous antique stores in Adamstown. One excellent restaurant is just one block down Main Street - a simple walk. We go back to Alden House time and time again, and always will. It is just fantastic!

Was it the delicious, multi course breakfasts, the finely appointed room, or the great location right on Main Street? I guess all of these combined to make our visit to Lititz and the Lancaster area a wonderful experience.

The town of Lititz is full of wonderful surprises: The shops, the beautiful park with the spring and stream full of ducks, Wilbur’s Chocolate factory and The Sturgis Pretzel Factory, the grounds of Linden Hall and the cemetery where the body of General Sutter rests. I could go on and on of this stroll friendly spot and B&B.

Another plus were the flexible breakfast times at The Alden House allowing us to get up when we wanted. Innkeepers Bob and Shirley McCarthy were always helpful and there for any needs or information.

I would highly recommend The Alden House.

In planning a trip to the Lancaster, PA, area, I had read that Lititz was as charming as Strasburg. In my opinion, it is more so. Alden House is on Main Street and is owned by a pleasant couple who saw to our needs. We were traveling with our two daughters (11 and 14), and they were happy to accommodate them (some B&Bs were not) with a small extra charge. Still the price for our spacious room with an upstairs loft for the girls was reasonable and a lot less than some I priced. The beds were comfortable. The only drawbacks were no closets (if you like to hang up clothes) although they had hooks, and the street noise at night (it is amazingly busy!).

The breakfasts featured three courses--more food than you can eat, but all delicious. They will cater to dietary needs. A woman at our table turned downed their specialty--ployes (yummy buckwheat pancakes with cinnamon chips)--for a bowl of cereal.

The owners also advised us about activities and distances during our stay. They provided us with a detailed map to six covered bridges in the area, which was delightful. The main Amish country is only about a 15-20 minute drive and the drive is beautiful. Lititz has remained uncommercialized. Our favorite place was a park just around the corner where we could feed ducks and meet the locals who walked there. My husband enjoyed sitting out on the Alden House porch in a rocking chair while working on his Blackberry!

The Alden House and Lititz are definitely on my list of places to visit again!
