My fiancee and I were looking to spend a quiet weekend camping for our anniversary. We wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We booked a site at Kittatiny River Beach on the recommendation of a friend. On arrival we checked in at the main office and were directed back to the highway to access our site. The site we had booked is number 314, which according to the map is down the road from the majority of the sites. The staff made sure to explain to us that the map was misleading in that the site was not directly on the river, they did not however, mention that the site was RIGHT on the highway! The road was a stone's throw away from our site, not even blocked by trees. It felt like every car driving by could see into our site. We immediately turned back to the office to see if we could move. I didn't even have to finish my sentence and the employee knew why we were back. Since it was last minute our options were, a site directly behind the store, a site surrounded by RVs, or a plethora of sites right by the road. We opted for one that was a bit more set back (maybe 15ft rather than 10ft from the road). Finally sitting down to dinner after setting everything up, it was dark and I have never seen so many bugs in my life. I am not new to camping and understand there will be insects but this was ridiculous. Driven into the tent by the bugs we attempted to go to sleep. Attempted being the operative word since a tractor trailor drove by literally every minute. We seriously considered packing up and heading home in the middle of the night. The only thing keeping us there was that Kittatiny does not allow any refunds.
The next day after zero sleep, we took a ride over to the Walmart 5 minutes away and bought a box of ear plugs. The bug problem was reduced on day 2 and we were able to enjoy some time around the fire. Armed with our ear plugs, we thought we would finally get some rest. Soon after laying down, we began hearing an engine revving on and off. Thinking it may be another camper being obnoxious we took a walk down the road and were told there was construction happening on the highway. Wonderful. Even with the plugs, it was enough to keep us up another night.
Day 3 we took the 12 mile kayak trip down the river. No complaints about the river trip (except that 12 miles is a REALLY long way to paddle!) There were no more construction noises on night 3 and we were able to get some sleep, just in time to get up and break down. The whole weekend was a total disappointment and we certainly will not be returning. If you're looking for a nice quiet retreat into nature, look elsewhere.
