“1886 Country home of the first Chief of the United States Forest Service.”

We would love to have had the chance to meet Mrs. Pinchot, the matriarch of the family. She must have been a real pistol. One of her most remarkable contributions to the home is the water topped table in the outdoor dining room. The framework of the dining "room" was covered by wisteria, which protected us from a light rain that started during our tour. The tour of the interior of the mansion only included three of the many rooms which was a little disappointing. Our tour guide was confident, well spoken and extremely informative and took care to point out many of the creative touches the family integrated into their summer home. The grounds had been clear cut before the building was built, allowing the landscapers the freedom of starting with a blank slate in which to design beautiful gardens to truly reflected their creative ideas.

“Beautiful grounds”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

Interesting history here and lovely grounds. Went on the 4th of July when there was free admission and free ice cream - what more could you ask for? They offer free admission a few times per year, and I'd go back again for that. Don't know if I'd pay to park there on regular days, though.

“Beautiful Gardens with Views and Well Preserved Piece of PA History”

Set atop a high hill is Grey Towers. From the lower parking lot, there is a short but up hill walk to the mansion. Along the way, you see glimpses of the building, enticing you to press on to see more. We walked the grounds before taking the 4pm tour of all three floors. Don't miss the video in the Letter Box building to get the history of this conservation minded family. The outdoor dining area called the finger bowl, was relaxing and made us wish we were having dinner in this unique spot. Although most of the upper two floors are no longer decorated with time period furnishings, we appreciated being able to see almost every room of the mansion. The upper rooms are now used for conferences. Photographs throughout these rooms let you see how they looked when the Pinchot's resided at Grey Towers. The first floor has retained the period furnishings and character of the time. Give yourself enough time to explore the large, manicured gardens and lawns. One negative, no fault of the staff was the clueless parents of 5-6 year old twin boys that were very loud and interrupted our guide numerous times, causing her to shuss these lads several times. This being said, I don't think this is a tour that preschoolers can appreciate. Props to the guide for keeping her cool and managing these boys when their parents wouldn't.

“Beautiful place”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

Beautiful historic site. Clean and well kept. Must see. Disappointing that a beautiful, historic landmark had rooms turned into offices of modern day rather than invest in trying to maintain its historic decor. Very sad as modernized rooms took from the beauty of this amazing site.

everything about this beautiful home was wonderful. the walk up from the parking lot teases you with glimpses of the house and gardens and then the view from the top is incredible. everything about this site and our tour was perfect. the grounds and gardens are well maintained and beautiful. for no charge you can wander around the property as long as you like. for $8.00( for adults kids under 12 are free) you can get an excellent guided tour of the first floor of the home and gardens. our tour guide was ken and he was awesome. so many stories and information on the family and their conservation efforts... this property is a perfect example of our national forestry and conservation programs working correctly . do not hesitate to visit . the staff were all friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. the property was spotless and the restrooms were probably the nicest and cleanest public restrooms that i have ever used!
