“Loved it - we'll be back!”
Reviewed 2 September 2011

I stayed with my kids ages 11 & 8 for a week. We used it as a base to visit friends in Beaver County, my brother in Pittsburgh, and to tour the 'burgh with my kids. Everything about our visit here was wonderful.

Staff
Can you say extremely nice? Wow! They were fantastic.

The bed - the important stuff.
I've learned that a bad bed makes for a bad vacation.
This bed was much fantastico!

Outdoor area
The outdoor grill area really made a difference for us. We grilled several times and did a full spread. We sat around the outdoor fire and had a relaxed time. As an added bonus the area is framed by the pool on one side and the hotel lobby on the other. Both feature big glass windows for easy viewing of the pool or the large screen lobby TV - It was ideal. And we cooked s'mores!

Grocery Stores
Two grocery stores are nearby, and the Giant Eagle has gluten free options to accomodate our allergy needs. It was wonderful having the full fridge and stove top in our room. Buying groceries saved us a ton of money on food.

Location
Easy access to 376 making it a breeze to get around. 15 minutes to Downtown, Carnegie Science, North Shore activities (with normal traffic. Be careful of days with sports events - the traffic can really back up.). 30 minutes to the airport. Everything you need is in Monroeville so it's a great base if traveling with kids. (Visit the kids resale shop - Once Upon a Child - it rocks!)

Were there a few things they could improve? Sure. One of our phones wasn't great and it took a few minutes for them to find grilling utensils - that's it. Everything else was top notch. I give it a five. We'll be back on our next visit to the 'burgh!

We traveled to Pittsburgh in early August and needed a place with 2 bedrooms. We were planning on staying at the Residence Inn Pitt Northshore, which gets great reviews on TripAdvisor. But we were traveling to Pittsburgh for a swim meet and wanted a quiet, restful place and I noticed that the Pittsburgh Pirates Pro Baseball team was playing a 3 game home stretch during our stay, so I was delighted to find that there was a brand new Residence Inn just about 7-8 miles from the University of Pittsburgh, where the meet was being held. This RI just opened recently and though the drive can take 30+ minutes during peak weekday rush hours, it was an easy drive and only about 15 minutes during non-rush hour times.

The rooms were tastefully decorated, big and had a full kitchen (at least in the 2 BR units). Each bedroom had its own bathroom too which was nice. There were 3 large flat screen tv's in the 2 bedroom unit, so no fighting over what to watch. I was happy to have an in-room safe. The room was quiet except that I could hear nearby rooms' doors slam very loudly. I wish hotels would do something to muffle the sounds...the Crowne Plaza chain has quiet floors where the doors do not slam and it would be nice if all hotels invested in whatever minimal technology has been developed to allow the doors to self-close without making a lot of noise. The other noise issue was that housekeeping was frequently speaking loudly or yelling in the hall to coworkers, guests, etc. I am glad she was friendly, but the staff should be told that they should not make any unnecessary noise right outside of guests' rooms. And the landscaping crew was outside our room trimming the weeds on a hill with weedwackers before 8am one morning. But overall, I could not hear noise from the road OR from guests in rooms above us or next to us, so overall, the room was relatively peaceful.

The staff at this new RI was eager to please and were helpful with dining suggestions and shopping locales. There were many places to choose from, including a mall that was only about a mile away. There was a Buffalo Wild Wings within walking distance and a Sheetz (made to order sandwiches and convenience store items) right in the hotel parking lot. There was also an Applebees right across the street and a delightful Thai restaurant (Green Mango) next to the Applebees.

The morning breakfast was good and the staff was on their toes refilling the hot items. The evening reception (mon-wed nights) was a nice touch for a snack, and probably some nights would be enough for a light dinner. Free internet in the lobby worked fine, and free in-room internet was ok too. A bit slow for wireless, but when hooked up, worked well.

The pool was very small and indoors. People with small children would be happy with the pool, but since I was with teenagers who swim competitively, the pool was not a draw for us. There was an outdoor barbecue area/firepit and a small basketball court, and there were frequently hotel guests enjoying these amenities. There seemed to be a number of long term guests, which is frequently the case at a RI, but it was not at all a party place, as happens at some RI when there are a lot of long-term guests. The long term guests were mostly families with small children and not party-animals.

All in all, I am so happy I found this great option near the University of Pitt and will stay here again if I need to be in the area again.

We stay in many residence inns, and this one was definitely updated--much nicer kitchen, larger rooms, better beds... We arrived before check-in and were told we had to wait, but almost immediately they managed to find an available room. Was worried about the distance from Pittsburgh, but it was a quick 10-15 minute drive in. Breakfast was a bit disorganized--space was limited and they ran out of items a lot, but the hotel seemed crowded at the time. Maybe they could expand the breakfast room, and have more than one person stocking it at a time to improve this.

While waiting for our room to be ready (we couldn't check in until almost 6pm) the staff made excuses and did nothing to assist or compensate our family despite the Marriott rewards room guarantee. Furthermore, while marooned in the lobby the staff fielded called from 2 other guests that they were not able to find their reservations or did not have facilities ready. The staff was poorly trained and poorly organized, which included the management; whom didn't follow through with contacting our family regarding the Marriott Gold plan compensation as promised.

The hotel is nearly new and still working out a few kinks. For example, cleaning staff seem to forget to leave towels, or bath mats, or toiletries, but expect that this will be fixed soon. A few internet bugs were sorted within a day. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, pleasant and have a small cook-top, large refrigerator, and a microwave (which needed to have the inside of the door cleaned.) Would be nice to have more food choices available in the small market, but fresh fruit is available around the clock in the lobby. Excellent breakfast with many options, and food served some evenings, too. Far and away the best best hotel in the area - I hate to let the word out, so please leave a room for me!

We stayed in this hotel for long term and it was wonderful! The staff was so friendly and helpful. The whole hotel was very clean. The rooms are very spacious. The breakfast is great and they even have dinner a couple nights a week. I really can't say there was anything bad about this hotel except it would have been nice to have an outdoor pool. But the indoor pool was very nice. We loved it and we'll be back if we are ever in the Monroeville area again!!!!!
