This landlady may once have been good at the B&B business, but perhaps she ought to reconsider it now since it is so very distasteful to her. She is no longer welcoming, kind, diplomatic, or even nice to be around. Despite saying on the telephone that one could enter either through the front door or the back, the very first words out of her mouth when I came in were to scold me for choosing the more convenient kitchen door. When she wasn't scolding, she droned on with pointless stories and comments. As others have mentioned, if you have to walk down a public hall to get to it, don't call it a private bathroom. We were in too much of a hurry, I guess, so did not happen to read the review that plainly stated this negative. Anyway, it was an unpleasant surprise, especially without our bathrobes. There were two locks on our room's door, and we locked both and went to bed, then one of us had to wake the other up in the middle of the night to be able to get out to go down the hall to the bathroom, because of one lock being strangely designed and difficult to open. The towels were clean but pretty old; some were threadbare. Strange draperies in front of the shower curtain hang so low that both of us had to duck under them instead of just stepping into the shower. Victorian decor shouldn't necessarily mean that every available surface is covered with dollar store junk, little of it serving any useful purpose. Nor should it mean that Christmas trees are put in guest rooms, and get left up all year round. Bedside table lights were mismatched, and dim, and placed inconveniently among a bunch of fake Victorian trinkets. The landlady was so outrageous that we just decided to treat it like we were in a bad tv show, and wait to see what else she would do. We overheard her rudely telling another couple that they should not have assumed that since she participates in a B&B website, that their gift certificate would be usable. We don't know the details, but it was not remotely surprising that she was rude instead of consoling and conciliatory. In retrospect I wonder if perhaps she is suffering some ailment that prevents her from seeing or knowing how ill suited her behavior is to her profession. The bathroom and our room were both spotless, and clean. We were safe, had a roof over our heads, and were cool enough with the noisy air conditioner in our room. It was just a singularly disappointing experience, and it didn't need to be. I hope the landlady finds an occupation she enjoys more than this one.

My wife and I stayed here on our anniversary and it was terrible. Doris was rude to us from the first moment we introduced ourselves, and continued to be rude and obnoxious the entire evening and next morning. She scolded me twice for using the kitchen door to get to my car, even though the parking lot is next to the kitchen door. There was some guy doing dishes in the kitchen while I was leaving, and she stood there yelling at him and making fun of him--very awkward for a guest to see this. She did not tell us anything about the house and made it pretty clear that we were not allowed to touch anything, especially the kitchen. She talked at length about how she hated having a B&B, how it ruined her life, and how much she would like to get rid of it but she can't. The bathroom was not connected to the bedroom, which she failed to mention when I booked the room. The bed was very hard. There was a tiny television in the room, but you couldn't watch it because it was on a table lower than the level of the bed. The breakfast was pretty good, but Doris would not stop talking and interrupting us as we tried to converse with the other guests. Then she berated the other guests for trying to us a gift certificate Such a rude and obnoxious person should not be running bed and breakfast.

As the other review noted, there are alot of holiday decorations but they seem to go well with the Victorian decor. Our room (the Elizabeth) was very clean and ornately decorated. There was a tree dedicated to the red hat society in it that was very pretty. The bed was a little hard but we were otherwise comfortable. Our room had a bathroom in it. The other rooms are larger than the Elizabeth but the bathrooms for them are across the hall (they each have a bathroom but you have to go across the hall to get to them.) The owner was very friendly and prepared a bountiful breakfast for us. We had strawberry shortcake, a large plate of cut fruit, delicious french toast with real Vermont maple syrup and crispy bacon. She even offered seconds but we declined. The owner has obviously painstakingly decorated the entire house. If you like victorian, you'll love the victorian rose.

The Victorian Rose is a lovely bed and breakfast in Mt. Joy. The innkeeper is an older woman who can serve a good breakfast. The whole house is decorated for Christmas including a tree in the living area. We stayed in the Victorian Room and we were surprised to find out that the bathroom (although private) is outside of your room. So, If you need to get up in the middle of the night, you have to unlock your room in order to go to the bathroom. I guess it is not a big deal, but my husband and I prefer our own bathroom without having to cross a hallway to enter. The bed was hard as were the pillows. There is nothing to drink or nowhere to get ice unless you ask the innkeeper.
But, the breakfast was very good and the innkeeper was a nice elderly woman with a lot of spirit!!
We probably won't go back due to the bathroom arrangement.
