The food was delicious, staff very helpful, grounds were beautiful and atmosphere was laid back.

Would definitely eat or stay here again with the wife.

We recently stayed in the Skippack Room in the barn/restaurant building. I wish i could say the room was nice, but it was a dump. The carpet was worn out, the wall and ceiling paint was bubbled and riddled with marks, and furniture was ready for Goodwill. Even the framed pictures on the walls were stained (why? Is that suppose to add character?). When you don't want to sit in the chair in your room that's a bad sign. Only 2 small shabby lamps were provided in the room, although the bathroom did have adequate lighting. Overall I've been in more luxurious dorm rooms. One point I want to make clear; this is not a housekeeping problem, this is a management problem. Previous writers about the heat and air situation are correct. You can have one or the other, but the Inn controls which you get. Save yourself the misery and stay at the Golden Plough in Lahaska.

Room Tip: Either get their best room or stay elsewhere

My wife and I stayed at the JAI on a trip to Doylestown, PA. We arrived to find what seemed to be a beautiful place. The grounds had to look of a small historic village green. We tried to check in to our room at 2:05 only to be told, qwithout even checking, that the room would not be ready until the 3:00 check in time. We were told to drive around the area and that they would call us when our room was ready. ten minutes later the hotel called us that the room was ready. Why didn't they just tell us to wait a few minutes?

Our room was in the"Barn". nice, but very sparcely furnished with a tiny TV. We set the thermostat at 69 degrees but the room got warmer. The lower we set the temp at the warmer it got. We finally found out that the hotel had heat OR cooling but not both. The heat was on in the whole hotel until late spring and then the A/C was on till fall. Not both.

The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The breakfast was just ok. There are several chain hotels in the area that I would stay at the next time I'm in the area.

This please is too big to be a B&B and too small to be a hotel.

I think that you hit the issue right on the nose. "Too big to be a B&B and too small to be a hotel." We keep the B&B designation because our 5 buildings are all historic buildings renovated with modern conveniences and decorated with antique or period reproduction furnishings. We avoid being grouped into the hotel designation because we don't want guests to expect an ultra-modern, contemporary hotel like most chains are becoming.

The best way to ensure an early check in is to call ahead. If you call ahead, we have a better chance at alerting our housekeeping staff to have the room ready. With so many amazing activities in the area, we recommend checking them out while we check on the status of your room.

Since we are dealing with historic buildings, our heating and cooling systems do have some restrictions. Two of our buildings run on a central unit controlled by the Front Desk. The thermostats in the room can control the amount of air that travels into the room but setting the temperature. Ceiling fans, stand fans, and portable heaters can be used to regulate the temperature in the room by a few degrees. When we experience unexpected temperature peaks and drops, it does become difficult at times to please all the guests in a building. Instead of staying at a different hotel, you can request a building that allows you to control the temperature in your room from a private unit.

My wife and I were attracted by the website's description "tucked away on 12 acres of rolling countryside". In reality our room in the John Roberts House was situated along a busy and noisy four lane road with neon signs for Costco and Best Buy across the street. No doubt at one point the Inn was a lovely place in the country but development has encroached in a powerful way.

While the Inn does in fact has historic buildings, many of the rooms are in modern additions to those historic structures. We stayed in one of the modern rooms, which was clean and spacious, but not quiant, charming or romantic in the way we have associated with "historic". The advertised in-room jazcuzzi tub didn't work. When we called this attention to management, they said they'd have someone look at it after we checked out. The room also lacked ammenties common in other hotels: no in-room coffee makers or irons/ironing board.

Lastly, the breakfast -- usually a highlight of B & Bs -- was very disappointing. It was a breakfast buffett with dried out eggs and overcooked bacon sitting on a steam table. Most midrange business hotels (Courtyards, Hampton) do better.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms in the John Roberts House -- it is right along a four lane road with car and truck traff...

I very much appreciate your review, but I wanted to clear up some things that other guests my find confusing in regards to our services and amenities. The Joseph Ambler Inn has a total of 52 rooms and 7 different types. We have a wide variety of rooms to try and appeal to everyone's different style. For the guests looking to spend the night in a quiet, historic room, we have rooms to accommodate them. We also need to accommodate our business travelers who prefer more modern rooms with some historic flair. Many of the problems in this review could have been resolved by bringing them to the attention of our front desk. Our front desk is available 24/7 (unlike many B&Bs) so that we can attend to our guests' needs as they arise.

While the rooms do not have in-room coffee makers, we do have coffee available 24 hours a day that is complimentary to overnight guests. I have personally added vinyl decals to the wall mirrors where the iron and ironing boards are stored. All of our rooms have an iron and ironing board for guests to use.

The Inn is situated on 12 acres of countryside and is surrounded by residential developments and the Montgomery Township Administration Building. Horsham Road which runs closest to us, is a 2 lane residential thruway. There may be some increased noise during the week around peak travel times, but overall the noise is kept very minimal due to a natural tree line on our property that dampens the noise. Our most popular wedding ceremony site is our front lawn; it would not be such a popular site if the traffic from the road was that encroaching. Also, neither Costco nor Best Buy have neon signs visible from any of the five buildings. Costco is located a .5 miles from the Inn on Upper State Road and Best Buy is located 1.1 miles from the Inn on Route 309.

I would encourage anyone staying with us to call the Front Desk if you encounter any problems or inconveniences during your stay. Contrary to the remarks from this guest, our Front Desk is able and willing to respond to any issues in real time. Our goal is make your stay as comfortable for you as possible.

Joseph Ambler Inn is one of the gems of our area! The staff has always been gracious and the accommodations are comfy and inviting. The owners have taken great care to make JAI warm and inviting. We have enjoyed numerous dinners and have found the food to be unsurpassed in quality. Our servers have always been attentive, going above and beyond to make us happy and provide a lovely environment for our meals. We have lived in this area for over 20 years and feel that JAI is one of the finest facilities around. We look forward to returning again and again!

The room felt like I was walking into a time warp, it felt like I was staying at the Bates Motel. Old, dusty, musty, shabby, spider webs, the cat 'shadow' wanders the area catching mice. I guess that's what you get when you stay in the Barn. There is no room service, no elevator, no turn down service, no advance check-out service, no toast in the morning only bagels. The breakfast was okay, typical buffet style, my chair was short one leg, so it wobbled, the coffee was bad but the orange juice and water were good.

Carpet stained, linens were old and shabby, air conditioning didn't work, we were given a fan...the room was very warm. The door didn't lock, I could hear the person snoring in the next room and when the toilet flushed.

The patio was lovely, beautiful day to sit outside, the service was poor. They offered 'happy hour' on the website and the sign is in the office, but they really don't offer this in the bar.

The dinner was perfect, the only thing during the stay that I would say was good. Although, we were served quickly with no time to have conversation between.

If you like staying with nature and like the smell of skunk and don't mind a wandering cat looking for dinner, you may like staying here...watch out for the ghosts!

I also think keep 'beta' fighting fish in containers with plants is not a nice way to keep a fish.

I would just like to address some of the complaints from this review. Starting with dining, Happy Hour pricing is automatically calculated by our computer system for all order placed in the bar JPub. Happy Hour pricing is applied during the advertised times in our marketing literature. Room Service orders can be placed in person or via phone with our hostess on duty. The only times room service is not available is during the meal times when the restaurant is closed. To ensure product quality, there is no toast set up on our buffet, however, if you ask a server, they would be more than happy to assist you with anything you do not see. As for our property, all of our chairs have the required numbers of legs to make them fully functional and all our guest room and bathroom doors have working locks. Our heating and air conditioning units are maintained regularly although two of our buildings are on central units, so not all rooms can control temperature. Unfortunately due to the historic nature of our property, we are not able to build elevators into the existing structure. With advanced notice of any mobility issues, our Front Desk does make necessary accommodations for guests with special needs. Our confirmation letters do state that we have no elevators and to contact the guest if they have any special needs. Due to the large size of our property and limited housekeeping staff, we do not offer any turn down service. We also do not offer express check out because our standard check out takes less than 3 minutes and can be done at any point after 3am. Our Front Desk is staffed 24/7 to assist guests. For guests on a tight schedule, we can make arrangements for them to leave the keys in the room upon departure and we will email them their final invoice. I do apologize that this guest had an unfortunate stay with us, but I don't want any guests reading this to be confused by services that we do offer.

My wife and I bought a Groupon for the Joseph Ambler Inn which we just redeemed this weekend. The grounds are very nice, even in the winter. The buildings are great historical and maintained well. We stayed in the Thomas Wilson house which had a cozy sitting room with a working gas fire place on the first floor and downstairs had a small workout room. The room was great with exposed stone wall and wood beam over the door. Rooms were nicely kept and had a hotel like amenities not usually found in a B&B type place. I know it's not a B&B but is has the feel of one. Their complimentary breakfast was good. The dinner we had was very well prepared and presented. We had the scallops and lamb shank which we would recommend and have again ourselves upon our return. Its location is pretty central to a lot of things in the area but on enough land and generating enough ambiance to make you feel tucked away from it all. We will be back and think you should try it yourself.

Room Tip: room 403 has a room over it and stairs right behind the bed. If you are in the Thimas Wilson house I...
