Neffdale Farm Bed & Breakfast

The hosts were wonderful and kind. It was nice to see a family operated dairy farm in action. The kids (12,7,and 2 years old) loved the calves and the kittens. Don't expect a hearty breakfast here, but the breads, coffee and juice were all we needed. The rooms were clean, and well kept. Its very close to Dutch Wonderland where we had spent the day.

We enjoyed a lovely evening walking around the farm, watching the cows, calfs and cats! The corn was high, the evening clear and the moon was full - gentle breeze was lovely to cool things down, if you like the odor......

The room was comfortable and quiet, There was a room air conditioner, which with the 95+ temps was wonderful. The bathroom was not air conditioned, but that was ok. Everything was clean and neat. No tv in the room and that was also fine.

Glenda was a great hostess, answered all our questions and served a nice continental breakfast. We felt quite at home and would recommend the farm to those who would like to see the cows up close.

If you want a nice ride, travel the road on the side of the farm - lovely scenery - farms, woods, curvy roads.

We stayed 4 nights in 2 rooms.

Arrived not fully knowing what to expect, as this was our first time staying at a working farm. I already gathered that it wasn't your average bed and breakfast and it's not. We were literally staying inside someone's home, in the bedrooms on the top floor. We, and the kids, liked it. It's not a hotel stay; you are in an upstairs bedroom in an old farmhouse. We wanted a different experience from a hotel and we certainly got it!

The hostess met us upon arrival. I had communicated with her via telephone several times already and found her very friendly. She was very accommodating when I informed her a couple days prior that we had one extra person than expected for the first night, and could we check out a day early and use our prepayment for another room the first night? (Another thing, which was only a tad inconvenient, is that they do not take credit cards or any kind of electronic reservation. You book and pay the old fashioned way. Call and send a check)

She invited us to watch the evening milking of the cows and she took us out to the barn. The kids really liked it. The animals around were all friendly and the porch the perfect spot to sit and watch buggies pass, or cows and horses graze. The kids really enjoyed all the cats and kittens.

The house is an older farm house, and thus there are lots of creaks when walking up and down the stairs. That's not a complaint -- I like older homes a lot. I was concerned, tho, with my kids ( who are older kids and not super rambunctious) that the walking around and creaking and older doors shutting (which needed to be shut kinda hard) might disturb the house owners, or other guests.

The first night, one of the 12 year olds said, "I really like staying here! This is neat!" Which, considering there really isn't a lot of entertainment for them directly on the property, was kinda surprising. But I was glad they saw it as neat. We did too.

I've been to bed and breakfasts before, but don't recall being in this close in proximity of the hosts' living area. At first I was concerned we might be an imposition, but that quickly dissipated. The family was very friendly, the hostess sat and chatted with us nearly every evening, but at the same time was very non-intrusive. We were very comfortable there, although we were in someone's house. The air is very inviting, relaxed and hospitable. We spent time out, and the family gave us suggestions about where to eat and where to see various sights. In the morning and evening, when there were other guests as well, much friendly conversation was had, with the hostess sitting and joining as well. Everyone discussed their plans for the day, and gave recaps in the evening if we came across each other. It gave such a feeling of familiarity. It just made the stay that much more personal and enjoyable.

Breakfast consisted of coffee, tea, orange juice, fruit, nut and granola bars, oatmeal, cereal and various pastries/breads. This is noted on their website, and we fully expected it. It was absolutely fine for us, as we are not huge breakfast eaters. If you want a fuller and hot breakfast, you'll need to go out. A wonderful restaurant called Dienners in right down the road and Amish owned. It's also a place where the locals go.

I found the beds comfortable. Everyone seemed to get a good nights sleep. Keys are provided for the bedrooms, so you can lock the room when you go out. Towels and washcloths were replenished each day.

We really enjoyed our stay here, and will book again when up in the area!
