“Short stay. Nice area”
Reviewed 4 June 2014 via mobile

Booked this based on proximity to UPCH. Rooms we very clean. Nice tech up grades such as reading lights, nice desk area and functioning WiFi all over the hotel. As with other reviewers the bathroom setup was a bit confusing as there to be plenty of room to combine them rather than divide them. Little weird but the interiors were nice. Not real sound proof. Heard the outside wake up bright and early. Front desk was super friendly and very helpful with questions. All and all a nice stay. Love the area and hope to be back to enjoy it longer.

We are a family of 5 (including 3 kids, ages 7-15) and stayed here while in Pittsburgh for Carnival and Reunion weekend at Carnegie Mellon. Overall, it was very good, and the comments from my previous review (July 2013) are still applicable.

A couple changes:
-The breakfast selection wasn't quite the same, and the croissants were a bit stale. But, overall the breakfast was fine.
-Parking is no longer free. It is now $15 per day. The room prices were not reduced to compensate.

We inquired about the free local shuttle this time, but didn't use it. We learned that you must make a reservation for a specific time to go and to be picked up, and that some time-slots fill up. We weren't able to plan times that precisely, so we drove around town ourselves.

Overall, our decision to stay here on future trips will be (as it was this time and last July) a question of price vs convenience. For the convenience to the East End of Pittsburgh, we would definitely stay here again, but based on price, we might stay elsewhere, depending on what deals are available.

I have stayed at this hotel a half dozen times and am impressed with all of the development going on in this area. The area is turning in to an upscale location that will soon cater to the millenials and nearby students. The hotel is always clean, service is friendly and prompt and food delivery options are plenty. The only surprise this trip was the unannounced $15 parking fee. Parking used to be free.

Stayed 2 nights from out of town for a family event.

The good: Room was clean, desk with light dimmer was nice feature, tv was decent, a/c worked fine. Shuttle driver who took us to our event on Pitt campus was super nice and the shuttle was a great service. The shopping square was small but fun with Panera, 2 boutique clothing stores my teens loved, a neat toy store, a coffee shop, and Social Bar/Grill (great food and service at Social!).

The okay: Breakfast wasn't outstanding but better than typical continental: waffle maker, eggs, cold cereal, bagels, muffins, nutella, yogurt, milk selection and juices. Front desk was okay, they had a pleasant demeanor but they did forget my out of town gift bag until I asked for it, not a big deal.

The disappointing: Hate to make this a long list but let's start with horrid parking situation - charged $15/day to navigate the parking structure and elevators, then when I checked out, the machine inside the garage wanted to charge me $30 in addition to what was on my room bill, so I had to run all the way back in and get some kind of courtesy pass to get out again with other cars waiting behind me. Pool was closed for renovation and the Fitness center pool is only for ages 14 and up. View of the bus depot unpleasant and reverse beeping in the am. Very poor counter space in the bathrooms, non existent in the toilet room which happens to be at the food of the bed - a horrible design decision. Housekeeping never came even though we left the room from 12-5pm. I called and asked if I could at least get towels - no apologies and they brought towels for 3 people (we had 4 in the room) and tiny shampoo, etc was not replenished.

Overall: Maybe if the view were better, housekeeping had shown up and the pool had been open I could overlook the parking situation and maybe the toilet at the end of the bed, but unfortunately the entire experience fell quite short of my expectations.

Stayed in the Springhill Suites for a couple of days. I found the room very clean and comfortable but, unfortunately, I got a room on the back side of the hotel and the view from my window was what appeared to be a city bus maintenance depot. at around 7:00 am every morning, there was heavy equipment activity going on. Fortunately for me, I get up early but if you wanted to sleep in, you would have problems. Also, if you are looking for high end dining within easy walking distance, you're not going to get it. Only 3 restaurants in the immediate Bakery square area all of which are pizza, salads or sandwiches. On the plus side, the staff was great and very helpful. All in all, not a bad stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the front side of the hotel (facing bakery square).

Stayed at this SpringHill Suites for one night while on a college visit in Pittsburgh. This is a very new property, immaculately clean and with plenty of space. Our room was quiet and very comfortable. Lots of room to spread out if needed, as is always the case at this brand's properties. The breakfast was one of their "upgraded" ones - hot choices, fruit, yogurt, pastries, oatmeal bar, cold meats and hard boiled eggs, Nutella for your toast :) The only unpleasant part of breakfast was the coffee - truly undrinkable. Luckily, I had a decent cup from the in-room service (but if it had half and half instead of powdered creamer it would have been even better). Lobby staff was friendly upon check-in and check-out, and there was candy at the desk for the taking. (My son appreciated the Chupa-Chups.) The neighborhood is a new development built from a former industrial site - clean, with lots of modern places like Panera and Anthropologie. Google ha a large office there and the businesses surely serve their employees. The area surrounding the immediate Bakery Square is a bit of a roll of the dice - it's being developed but I wouldn't want to wander around at night. Bakery Square is fine, though.

Couple of downsides: $15 for parking (though the hotel will validate your ticket so you can go in and out in the same ticket in 24 hours). Also, the room layout has the toilet and a small sink in one small powder room separated from the sleeping area only by a sliding door (and with no ventilation fan for covering noise or actual ventilation); there is another area for the shower and a second sink that has frosted glass for the door. I would really prefer a but more privacy while I bathe and use the loo. The shower was large, though, and the two rooms had very nice finishes and good lighting. All in all, a pleasant stay in a location that's convenient to Squirrel Hill, Pitt and CMU - a good value as always.

A friend and I stayed here as a less expensive option near the city. The hotel was new, modern and beautiful. Parking was free and covered. Great deal to be near the city in the morning. Shower was spacious, but there was no tub. We did overlook the bus depot but a constant fan option as white noise left any bus noises unnoticeable. I would definately stay here again.
