I recently dined at Las Velas in Pittsburgh, PA which is located in the very popular Market Square - well known for their numerous dining spots. This is a very popular and well known restaurant in the Pittsburgh area. A flight of stairs leads to the restaurant and the dining and bar area is large. A light and airy restaurant with lots of space to move about. A nice spot to people watch if you're at a window that looks out onto the square. The waitress arrived with a huge bowl of nacho chips and a healthy helping of salsa. The nacho chips could have been a meal in itself and it and the salsa got me off to a great start. I ordered a shrimp dish with a tomato-type sauce (you have a choice of sauces to choose from for a selection of dishes) with rice and beans. The entree was very tasty with a good number of very large shrimp. The only problem was the sauce was a little too spicy for me so be warned. If you like mild make sure the server knows this beforehand. In conclusion the service was very efficient, the food quality and quantity were excellent, the prices reasonable, the atmosphere can be noisy; but in a pleasant way. They do tend to get very busy at certain times and days. They probably take reservations; but you would have to check with Las Velas. Would I go back if I was in Pittsburgh again? Definitely.
