“Lovely for a weekend getaway”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

We are repeat guests, having held our family reunions at Shawnee for the past several years. It is a very attractive and historic facility in a beautiful area, with activities for all interests from nature to golfing. Morning coffee on the veranda's rocking chairs is a favorite of ours. Golf cart tours of the grounds are great fun. We appreciate the range of dining options, including craft brews and a cafe with decent lattes. The indoor pool is rarely staffed, so bring your own towels. Suites are spacious, while regular rooms are on the small side. Beds are comfy and bathrooms are well-stocked with the better soaps and lotions.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort has been a fixture in the Poconos since 1911. Historic Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is surrounded by majestic mountain scenery and is on the edge of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. We were there for a family get-together so we did not avail ourselves to recreation opportunities such as kayaking, canoeing, rafting, biking, hiking, fishing or golfing.

The non-smoking Inn has 99 rooms located on three floors. There are two entrances – if you pull into the guest check-in entrance, you will need to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the first floor. If you enter through the parking lot, an elevator can take you to the registration desk located on the first floor. The front veranda has lovely rockers overlooking mountains, trees, open fields, flowers, and the Delaware River in the distance.

The front desk person was efficient, but not overly friendly. Check in is at 4pm; however, we were able to access our room by 2:30pm. The housekeeping staff and other employees were exceptionally pleasant.

The lobby/registration desk was in the center of three hallways and had a concierge service desk, many soft chairs, a snack bar and restaurant. Even if your room was at the furthest point, it was not too far of a walk. The coin operated guest washer and dryer are located on the third floor of the Inn. There is free Wi-Fi.

The indoor pool and hot tub are located in the lower level of the building – see pictures. The pool, hot tub, fitness center and small game room are open 10am-10pm seven days a week. No sauna or steam room; however, there is a spa. We went to see the pool and was told by the lifeguard that we would have to sign for towels and she would issue them. When we returned later that evening, the lifeguard was no longer on duty and we had to back track upstairs to the front desk for the towels. We were amused by how much they guarded the pool towels when an office with a computer and other valuables was left open and unattended on the same lower level of the building.

Breakfast is not included with the room rate but is available in the on-site River Restaurant as a buffet. Eggs, bacon, sausage, one waffle maker, pancakes, potatoes, cereal and fruit are offered.

The key system has been upgraded to the typical card system. The standard rooms are small – about 12’ x 12’. We had a king bed with triple sheets. The pillows were regular size - not the tiny little pillows so many places provide. Because the room was so small, there was only one night table that had to be positioned sideways. This is a pet peeve of ours since we both wear eyeglasses and keep water at the bedside at night. One night table means one of us has to put our eyeglasses and water on the floor – both a safety and sanitary issue. It also means only one of us has a lamp to read by. The one bedside lamp was barely bright enough to read by. A small chair was positioned in the corner and the desk with a lamp was located under the window. An armoire housed the TV and dresser drawers. The coffee maker and ice bucket was on top of the almost 6’ armoire. A mirror (not full length) was provided. The room did not have a refrigerator or microwave.

We asked for and was charged extra for a room facing the river. This was a waste since the river is so far away it can barely be seen from the room and definitely not heard. If you look at the pictures included with this review, you can see how far away the Delaware River is from the rooms – not worth the extra charge! There are no balconies.

The bathroom is exceptionally small – the floor space is about 2’6” x 3’6” and the door needs that room to open. For the elderly or handicap, beware! You will need to step up a 12” step (approx.) to get into the bathroom – a definite safety issue. The only counter space in the bathroom is the edge of the top of the toilet tank and pedestal sink – see pictures. There is no exhaust vent, heat lamp, assist bar, makeup mirror or clothesline in the bathroom.

The air conditioner is adequate and not too noisy. A clock radio, luggage rack, attached wooden hangers (some with clips), ironing broad, iron, and hair dryer are all provided. The closet is simply a bar – no door.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort was clean and based on that, we would stay there again; however, it would not be a vacation destination for us. The age of the building probably makes maintenance a challenge but it also adds to its charm. As long as you stay there knowing the limitations of a historic building, you will probably be happy. My one warning is to seniors and the handicap – be careful of that bathroom step!

Room Tip: Don't pay extra for a river view - you can barely see the water and you can't hear it.

Dear peachessmith: Great review. Very thorough. You are correct, this is a perfect place to get-together with family, friends, or as a group of like-minded individuals. The atmosphere is inviting and the available activities are plentiful. Our veranda is one of the best features of our resort and allows our guests to enjoy the breathtaking views this historic resort provides.

Our goal is provide exceptional service and it seems that our front desk staffed may have missed the mark. Please be assured this will be addressed.

Thank you for your detailed account of the rooms, bathrooms, pool area, etc... I apologize for any of the quirks that may have caused you displeasure during your stay. We are looking at our facilities and procedures constantly and trying to adjust them to satisfy our guests and deliver above what is expected. We know as a staff that a complaint is an expectation not met.

We hope to see you again.

Other than the room being quite small, I really don't have anything negative to say.
We had a nice stay. There were great activities and the staff seemed nice & helpful.
We only ventured away from the Inn one day and that was to go to Bushkill Falls. The room was clean enough and the treats left by the staff was a very nice touch. They even placed my daughters stuffed puppy genlty on the made bed and she was super impressed. We are not avid golfers but enjoyed the golfing activites as well as the bike riding, archery, and water polo. I do wish more of the activities were included in the price, ie: bikes, canoes, etc. I also wish the brewery was open while we were there. The free concert and farmers market was nice.and it was nice to have options to eat within the hotel and on the grounds, but the food was just okay to us. We stayed 2 full days (arrived Sunday night and left Wednesday morning) and had plenty to do for 14 and 10 yr olds. Would stay again although it would only be a short stay again.

Thank you StacyV4 for taking time out to relay your experience at Shawnee. We are very fortunate to be located in a natural, breathtaking setting. Being built in 1911, room size did not take the same precedent as it does today. However, cleanliness and comfort still rank high with our guests and something we strive to deliver every moment of every day. The Pocono Mountains are full of educational, fun and relaxing activities. We are delighted to be the home base to discover these treasures. There is a lot to do right on site from canoeing to rafting, campfires with smores, golf, and more. We hope you will come back for a quick getaway soon.

The playing conditions at both Shawnee and the Great Bear golf courses was outstanding. The food service was top-notch, the dining facilities were adequate and pleasant. But, while the beds were comfortable, the quality and cleanliness of the rooms just doesn't measure up to the quality expected at a renowned Golf/resort facility. I would definitely return to utilize your out standing, and diverse, facilities, but would probably seek accommodations elsewhere.

Dear Mark G: Thank you for your review. We are very fortunate to operate two of the finest golf facilities in the Pocono Mountains. With a classic course at Shawnee and a contemporary course (Nicklaus Signature design) at Great Bear, we have two great options for golfers.
The playing conditions at both Shawnee and the Great Bear golf courses was outstanding.
I apologize about the cleanliness of the rooms. That is not acceptable. Please reach out to me personally when you would like to return.

We had a very nice stay at Shawnee Inn and Resort. The golf courses were well maintained. It was a short distance from home so made it very convenient to travel to and from. The room was very clean and we had a nice dining experience in the River Room.

If you wish to truly enjoy your experience at Shawnee, work with the staff (Ask for J.J.). We played 63 holes of golf, had a BBQ by the river, rocked with a GREAT band at the craft brewery, and enjoyed the all restaurants. Great time!

I am so glad you loved the brewery's "Rhythm and Brews" night. We take pride at Shawnee to listen to our guests and deliver exceptional service for every guest at every chance.

I, unfortunately, believe the rooms were overpriced, especially since the air conditioning was not working properly. We should have received some kind of discount and/or credit. The Inn is old and looked a bit run down, but the golf course was nice and well maintained.

Dear cblood: I am sorry to hear about your disappointment. Our staff have since resolved the air conditioning issue. I hope you will give our resort another try, perhaps in the fall; the foliage is quite beautiful. It is a historic inn (103 years old!), and we do our best to keep up with the maintenance without losing the historic charm. We hope that our guest find value in all of the activities they can take part in as well. Again, I am sorry to hear your trip was disappointing, and I will reach out to you personally.
