“A very cozy place, great food and nice spa, A+”
Reviewed 29 May 2011

We went to the French Manor for our 10 year anniversary and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The weather was not the best but the setting, meals, spa and quiet location made the trip.

First, the breakfast is incredible and the dinner was also amazing. We found the food to be fresh and very tasty and while being rich in taste, it was not too heavy.

We stayed in the main house in the Versailles Room. We really like this location which is off the gorgeous dining room and on the top floor. The room was very cute with European charm. This place is from the 30's so do not expect the Ritz Carlton bathrooms. So if you like the old world provincial , then this is place for you.

The staff was nice and professional. It was a great weekend to remember and was a nice change of pace from the huge historic hotels that we usually visit. I would recommend the French Manor for a nice quiet romantic weekend!

My husband and I had stopped by the Inn a few years ago.We are both in agreement that it is a beautiful place. After reading the reviews, We decided to spend a night. We stayed in a spa suite which was really very comfortable. In the afternoon, went to a wine tasting in Hannah's Cafe, which was nice. Afterward, I enjoyed reading in front of the fireplace in the evening while my husband went for a massage in the spa.We did eat in the Manor's restaurant which I thought was very overrated and overpriced. While our room was nice, we could hear the people in the adjoining room. You'd think that for the price of over $300 for a room, there'd be a little insulating sound barrier between rooms! The Easter Bunny left a small basket outside of our suite for us, which was a nice touch. I'd rate breakfast better than dinner. We were grateful to have a few B&B gift cards to defer from the cost of our stay, which was over $500. We definately won't go back and wouldn't recommend The French Manor.

I did a lot of research before booking my Birthday getaway at the French Manor Inn and Spa. The remote location, size of the property, number of rooms, spa and restaurant were important. I stayed in a La Maisonneuve suite, the Chambord. It was beautiful, extremely clean and comfortable. I loved having a private balconly, whirlpool tub (PLENTY of hot water) and a fireplace. Being early March, lounging in front of the fire reading a book on a chilly night was wonderful. The spa was great, AJ and Cristy were attentive and efficient. The food/restaurant was incredible. I had two amazing. leisurly French meals. Point- all meals are cooked to order, so spending 2 hours at dinner is the norm, especially is you order 3+ courses. Breakfast in the main dining room is included and very filling. The staff greet you by name and I had the pleasure of meeting both of the owners' daughters, Bridget and Genevieve. My stay at The French Manor achieved it's purpose, complete relation, away from the real world. I plan on returning with my husband for our anniversary in a couple of years. I look forward to visiting the Inn during summertime and will take advantage of the hiking trails.

My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights at The French Manor and were extremely pleased with our entire weekend stay. It is a beautiful building located atop a hill in the Poconos with wonderful views across the rolling hills. We arrived in the afternoon and were immediately shown to our spacious spa room complete with fireplace, jacuzzi and four-poster king bed; there was a large decanter of sherry and a fruit and cheese platter waiting for us. The dinner that evening was fantastic - old traditional French cuisine which was refreshing considering all of the nouvelle cuisines and trendy restaurants of today. The dining room is lovely and romantic and the added addition of a piano player throughout the dinner highlighed our evening. The bedding and sheets are very comfortable and we had a pleasant night's sleep. The next morning we were treated to an elegant breakfast before we put on our boots and hiked through the mountainous area surrounding the hotel. Although there was about two feet of snow it was very special to experience the quietness and beauty of the surrounding hills and the wildlife throughout. The couples' massage was so so nice; our only regret was that it was over. Robin and AJ have a wonderful way of making you feel relaxed and, at the same time, doing a fantastic job. The pool and jacuzzi after our massage was a nice bonus to our afternoon. Since our dinner was so nice the previous night we decided to reserve again at The French Manor restaurant and were treated again to a delicious meal. Our stay was truly wonderful!
I have only a couple of criticisms: First, there should be a cd player in the room so that a guest can play some nice music in their room during such a romantic escape; Second, perhaps the in-room coffee maker should be upgraded to produced "hot" coffee - luke warm coffee is what is produced now. In addition, aside from hiking, there is not much to do in the immediate surroundings during this time of the year (late February). You will have to travel at least a half hour to find any other activities.
All in all The French Manor is a wonderful vacation destination that I would highly recommend.

Reviewed 7 February 2011

My Christmas present from my wife was for an extended weekend getaway at the French Manor. We decided on the first weekend in February, 2011. There are some good things and some bad things about this place.

Location:
We tend to like traveling to the Poconos because it's not too far from home, but far enough to feel like we got away (coming from central jersey). In general, being at the Manor is also far enough from a lot of things, but close enough if you needed to go to a store for something or find cheap eats close by. It's nestled on the top of a road but there are other homes close by so you are not completely away from civilization (that's good or bad depending on what you are looking for).

The Bad:
After all, if you're like me, you are trying to figure out if you want to stay here, so i'll start with the negative. If you decide to stay in the main building, it will be very noisy. The walls are super thin; our room was at the top, right above the kitchen and the first night there I hardly slept to to a service door outside that slammed open and shut all night long. Fortunately, they did move us to another room outside of the main building for the rest of our stay (The Genevieve Suite- a free upgrade, which was nice). The biggest thing that comes to mind is the complete lack of warm or hot water in the room (both of them!). My wife couldn't even take a shower in our own room. In addition, the water pressure from both the sink (freezing cold) and shower was abysmal. In fact, we had to walk to the spa and use the showers over there, where the temperature was luke-warm but at least the pressure was better. We alerted them about this, but never really heard anything back (though we did notice other couples complaining about the same thing). The room was ok- the beds were on the softer side but not bad. Our room had a jacuzzi but without the hot water it was pointless. The spa was descent- it's newer-looking and the hot tub and pool were very nice, but the spa massages we got were OK, nothing special about the quality of the massage, but not a bad massage either. Although newly built- there isn't a whole lot of attention to detail that you would typically find in a high-end spa, but it wasn't horrible either. The workout room was just an afterthought, built next to the pool area; and is only big enough to hold three pieces of cardio equipment. I used it everyday, but there is zero ventilation in there and it's hot as blazes. Most B&B's have a relaxing area where you can read and relax. This place has one, but it is only a small room with uncomfortable tables located in the main building- certainly not a place I wanted to hang out and relax. The chairs around the pool were better suited for this.

The Good:
The dining experience was great. The food was great; my wife called ahead and mentioned that I ate vegan, and the chef had already prepared a meal to suit my tastes. This was very nice. Lots of servers at our table. A beautiful hall with two fireplaces. Breakfast in there each morning- very nice. The dining experience was so elegant, that I wish the rest of the manor could live up to it. The fact that they moved my room after that horrible first night was nice. The did it with no problem. We also got our car stuck in the snow that first night, and they did send a Manor worker to come help us. That was great, too. Location wise, you are close to two state parks for hiking and other outdoor experiences. We went snowshoeing at Promised Land State Park, and it was only a 15min drive.

Overall:
As you can see, it was certainly a mixed bag. They market this place as a high-end experience, but only the dining really lived up to the bill. Due to the cost of the room, I can't say that you get completely what you pay for.

This was our third visit to The French Manor. Our last visit was two (2) years ago over Thanksgiving weekend and we stayed in the Carriage House, Geneve Suite which was lovely. This visit was for 2 nights on the New Year's Eve package. Since our last visit, they have added a Spa, Salt Water Indoor Pool, Exercise Room and five (5) Spa Suites. We were in Spa Suite 1.

The New Year's Eve package was excellent and it included meals, but be aware that it will cost you approximately an extra $100. per night for tax and gratuities which were not included. The Eve celebration was wonderful with a Jazz Combo and dancing to make it very festive. The meal was very good, except that the main meal was Lamb which is not a food that a majority of people eat, so we along with several other tables did not feel that the Lamb was a good selection. Fortunately, my mate likes Lamb, so he had both portions.

We were happy to learn that the breakfast on New Year's Day would be extended until 11:00 a.m. instead of 10:00 a.m. and that it would not be a sit-down, but a buffet. Unfortunately, unlike their excellent sit-down breakfast, the buffet was awful. The food was cold, the pancakes were tasteless and overcooked, the scrambled eggs were very unappetizing, the bacon you had to try to find a crisp piece, the french toast was cold and not very tasteful. In addition, there was no cereal, toast, muffins, danish. Their sit-down breakfast on Sunday was super. It was wonderful that you could have breakfast until 11:00 a.m., but if didn't have an omelett station, nothing. Myself and another person asked if we could have some crossiants as the little we took from the buffet was cold and awful. We waited approximately 20 minutes for three (3) crossiants and were told the reason for the wait was they had to defrost them. This breakfast was a complete waste.

Every afternoon they have Tea in there very lovely Hannah's Cafe. The day of arrival, the tea was great, but they brought out frozen danish and had no napkins. The second day, the tea had wonderful fruit filled pastry which was excellent and napkins.

One of the biggest disappointments was not the indoor salt water pool, but the fact that you had to go down steps and around on the outside to get to the pool, exercise room and spa. This might be ok in the spring/summer, but in the winter, you have to get bundled up to go swimming and then remove your wet clothes and get bundled up again to get back to your room. We especially wanted to stay in the Spa Suites because we both enjoy swimming and couldn't believe there was no inside access. Since this building is new, we could not comprehend why they built it this way????????????? Once of the major reasons we have not spent more time at the French Manor prior was because there was no indoor pool. Now there is one, but you have to go outdoors to get there. As stated, this is great in warm weather, but not in the fall and winter months. It is not even convenient when you go for a Spa treatment which is why we did not go to the Spa.

As stated this is a lovely place and we really enjoy staying here. As far as going again, because we like the Spa and Pool, we would only consider it in the warm weather.

The French Manor has a wonderful and accommodating staff and the accommodations are excellent along with the restaurant (forget the buffet). Another very nice touch is that they provide a crystal decanter of Sherry and a cheese, fruit and cracker platter in your room. What we don't understand, they only do that the first night, the second night nothing. The price of the room is the same for both nights, so we don't understand why this is not done each day?????? The fresh rose in the room is another excellent touch. We did receive a nice gift for the New Year from the owners, a lovely French Manor ornament and a box of Godiva Chocolate which was part of the New Year package.

You do have a refrigerator in your room, but there really are not any places in the immediate area to get a soda or something to munch on. There should be some vending machines at least or next time we will have to remember to pack some things or you have to seek a convenience store somewhere off the property.

All and all, we will go back again because there are more positives than negative. We also think that the website should have pictures of the Spa Suites.

On New Year's

This hidden treasure is tucked away in the PA mountains, with beautiful views of the sky, from the backside of the premises. Total silence, allday, everyday. The staff was extremely friendly and down to earth, always available to assist us at anytime, with no hessitation. The food...perfect, magnificent, extremely flavorful, can I say perfect again? The room was beautiful and cleaned everyday, almost immediately. (loved the housekeeping lady, she was the sweetest). Enjoyed the whirlpool & fireplace, in the room. We will be returning and I would encourage all others to do the same. Perfect for romance, a retreat for the office or if your traveling alone and want to get away. The grounds are beautiful for a wedding. Its only been 2 days and I miss it already!!
