“Great location; a nice little inn”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

I stayed here with my kids who will be attending Penn State this coming fall. The inn is conveniently located on the campus within walking distance of College Avenue and the key places we needed to be. The reception staff was fine, though a little officious. Our room overlooking a courtyard and gazebo, was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom and shower (no bath in our room) were fine, also. We did not eat at the inn, so we can't rate the food. It's really all about the setting--neither bad nor tremendous, but we will return again. My one recommendation--the portico needs a new coat of paint. For the price, it was worth it. We'll be returning late in June and the price is jacked up, perhaps the service will improve, commensurate with the higher price.

I stayed one quick night in this lovely hotel that reminds me a bit of the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill. It is definitely not a cookie cutter hotel. The decor was historic and elegant. The room was clean, beds were comfortable, and staff was friendly. Unlike some other reviewers, I did not find the HVAC to be loud at all. You can't beat the location if you are visiting PSU. In the two years that my daughter has attended PSU, this is the first time I was able to secure a room rate that I was willing to pay. ($135) Rates fluctuate dramatically with campus events. I would definitely stay here again if I can get a reasonable rate.

We booked a room at the Inn to take our daughter on a college tour of Penn State. The hotel sits on campus so I have to give it 5 stars in terms of location but 2 stars overall. The room we stayed in (1st floor)was very dated. The carpet had stains in various spots that compelled us to keep our shoes on and the wall paper was peeling and discolored. We checked in and left the room to tour the campus. Upon returning to the room that evening we found the heater/room cooler to be very loud. The beds were not comfortable at all. I thought perhaps this was just my take on them, but my husband and daughter felt the same way. The room was a decent size and there were plenty of fresh towels. There is a small single serve coffee pot, however when we attempted to make a cup it was not drinkable. The unit needs to be either replaced or serviced, as it brewed it filled the cup with some sort of white floating foam (Not creamer). For the cost of the room, I was expecting better. We paid $150 with tax for a small room with two double beds. We have stayed the night in a few hotels in the last few weeks on college tours and this was by far our least favorite and yet most expensive room. I would rather drive 6 hours to get back home then stay the night again at this hotel again. The staff was friendly and the cleaning crew do a fine job. The areas that need addressing are beyond their control.

Room Tip: Ask for a recently updated room if available

We have stayed at the NLI many times for all kinds of occasions. It is very convenient to campus and downtown State College. Very close to Rec Hall where we were able to enjoy the men's volleyball conference finals. Penn State's campus and State College are wonderful for walking and the Inn is in a perfect spot for that. Across Park Ave from the Inn is the College Heights Historic District, which is worth exploring - there are a few Sears homes in the neighborhood. Take a 10-15 minute walk east down Park Ave to the Arboretum, which is beautiful.

Great service from the friendly staff everywhere at the Inn. Whisker's is fun for happy hour or a night cap and its food is very good as well. We go to Whisker's even when we are not staying at the Inn. Parking is easy with the Nittany parking deck next door. We park and never come back to the car until we check out.

We love staying at the Inn.

Room Tip: All the rooms we have stayed in are quiet even those on the ground floor.

The Nittany Lion Inn is without a doubt the best place to stay in downtown State College. There isn't really any other decent place that allow you to stay. Unfortunately, because they host a lot of conferences, the room rate really fluctuate. We were there in the middle of the summer and happened to get a pretty good rate because there was no one on campus. The room is nice but the AC was kind of loud and noisy. The dinning room on the first floor is fabulous.

I've stayed at the Nittany Lion Inn on multiple occasions and am never disappointed. Check-in was friendly, speedy, and easy and my room was ready at noon the day I arrived. My meetings were held in one of the many conference rooms within the Inn which makes it very convenient - catered food was also very good and great variety! Had lunch in the restaurant in one of the private dining rooms which was first class! I look forward to many more memorable visits!

Stayed here for a short course being held in the inn - as the weather was very poor at the time, I'm glad I didn't have to venture outside. Room was tastefully decorated, and well kept. The heater/air conditioner was (typical for the USA) an in-room unit, which was very noisy, though did a good job keeping the room warm. I found the service at the front counter quite distant - not unfriendly, but certainly not friendly. When I sought advice on where to buy Pennsylvania-made gifts not related to Penn State, I was directed to the bookstore in town, but it really only stocked Penn State merchandise. The complimentary lift to the airport was useful. Overall, a good hotel for visiting Penn State, but didn't feel all that welcome.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feelings with us about your stay. We appreciate the opportunity to address our team as we certainly want to make each of our guests feel as if this is their home away from home. While our Spring weather can certainly be unpredictable, I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the property!
