“Old Hotel”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

Friendly Staff, but this hotel reminds me of one I stayed in as a kid back in the 70s, with the doors that you enter from the exterior. The room was moldy smelling and looked as if it hadn't been updated in decades. The breakfast buffet had good eggs, ok coffee, but french toast that was so hard it couldn't be eaten.

Thank you for your kind words about our staff. I'm sorry that you were not satisfied with your room, we do have interior rooms by our indoor pool or near the conference center, we would have gladly moved you to a different room. I will let our restaurant know about your concerns with breakfast. I do hope you give us another opportunity to make it up to you.

Windows opened to walkway overlooking a parking lot with loading dock. Choice of keeping blackout curtains closed or exposing the room to all passing by.

Air conditioning came on like a 747 on take off. Big range in temperature in room while AC was cycling. Desk downstream from AC, so couldn't work with AC without freezing.

Bathroom an odd mix. Low toilet from the 1960's. Tall granite counter for a tall person. Peeling anti-slip strips on bathroom. Shabby. Maids threw away soap every day, so had to keep opening new ones. I guess that was service.

Bed 4 on scale of 10.

Modest hot breakfast OK, but crowded with meeting participants.

State College seems to have a lot of dated motels. I think the best remedy for this one would be to teardown and rebuild.

Room Tip: choose room in hotel that has windows to outside, rather than walkway

Excellent hotel once you can get the layout down. It was difficult to initially fond our room. It has an excellent indoor swimming area. The rooms are comfortable and well-priced. The location is central and you have access to many local restaurants and activities. I would stay here again by choice. Parking was ample and my Tardis fit well. The Doctor.

Although the design of the hotel is a little strange (for example, our interior room had a huge wall-size window along the corridor like an old-time outside-facing motel would have), the room was large and comfortable. It was dimly lit though -- my only complaint about the room. The desk staff varied. One was friendly and helpful, another not so much. We requested a check-out time extension and were given a whopping 30 minutes; several collegues asked another clerk and received an hour. During the week there's a free continental breakfast, and we were disappointed that it wasn't free on weekends. So we paid a relatively modest amount and had a good breakfast. The meeting rooms were excellent, including a fantastic large, tiered lecture-hall-style room. And it's a quick drive to Penn State's Creamery for Peachy Paterno ice cream!

Room Tip: Ask for an interior room, not an exterior one in the back, if you want more quiet.
