“Absolutely Beautiful Setting!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2007

This is a property that has great potential, but isn't quite "there" yet. The grounds were even prettier than I expected, lovely plantings everywhere, and very well maintained. We enjoyed sitting on the chairs outside and taking in the view of the farmland in the distance and admiring the pretty setting. I wish I could say that about the rest of the property. We had booked a King Deluxe room for two nights, which was advertised on their website as being remodeled and updated, with a separate sink area, etc. Instead, we were given a room that was totally outdated, like something from the 60's or 70's. The worst part about it was the old A/C unit. It was loud, and got even louder as the night went on, which meant we didn't get much sleep. We were given the room we should have had the next night, and it was much, much better . . . as advertised, remodeled/updated, bigger, and a quiet A/C unit, but only after much confusion about whether our new room was ready - it was after 3:00. No offer of compensation was offered, either. Another guest was complaining about the dangerously hot water which was hard to control (we had that in the original room -in both the sink and shower), and he actually burned his foot from it. He complained that they didn't adjust his bill to comensate him for it. The breakfast was good, but it was so disorganized and so loud, with dishes clanging. . . people were walking in with no one to greet them, not realizing they could go ahead and seat themselves, and waiting around, then looking to find someone in charge. The pool was small, but nice, but the spa tub was definitely not clean, (murky water) so we didn't even think about getting in. Also, they let the used pool towels pile up and overflow. It was a pleasant surprise to see two hot air balloons overhead while we were lounging at the pool. By the way, we did hear the desk clerk tell another guest that they were still in the process of updating the rooms. I would suggest that you contact the hotel directly to make reservations, and to specifically request an updated room, or I think you will be disappointed, and may lose a night's sleep. Maybe once they improve the rest of the rooms and become a little more organized, it will be the kind of place it really should be. Our experience could have been wonderful with a few improvements.

By looking at the website, we were anticipating a lovely, sophisticated and tranquil country retreat. In defense of the Netherlands Inn and Spa, many of the hotels that we saw and drove by in the area looked a bit rundown and sad, but this place was simply awful.

The room appeared to have just barely been cleaned and the upholstery was stained in many places and dingy. The room had the feeling, look, furnishings and smell of a college dorm room. The coup de grace was a 1/2 used old bar of soap in the bathtub.

The pool is small, crowded and on the 2 days we were there filled with screaming children. Not the hotel's fault, of course, but anyone looking for a relaxing, adult getaway should know that this is not the place. The chairs on the lawn seemed to be the only outdoor space on the property with a measure of tranquility, but they were dirty and covered in bird droppings.

The breakfast, included in the fee, was adequate but the hall was filled with dirty dishes and tables - the staff was clearly overwhelmed trying to feed the entire hotel that morning. There was outdoor seating on a patio as well, but literally every table was filled with heaps of dirty dishes and not a soul was dining out there.

Nedless to say, we will not be returning.

Despite some hesitation due to recent reviews my husband and I booked a 4 day get away and we were very pleased! The king deluxe suite was spacious and clean, including a small kitchen. We believe that the rooms above and next to us were occupied, but we did not hear the other guests, and the bed was comfortable, so we were able to relax and sleep peacefully. The grounds are beautiful as the spa is surrounded by farmlands and flower gardens, and the pool was delightful. Breakfast was decent was included in the room price and consisted of a buffet of eggs, bacon, sausage, etc. One evening we ate at the on premise restaurant "The Bistro", it was a bit pricey and the quality of the food varied depending on what was ordered, the specials seemed to be a good bet. We found the staff to be friendly and accomodating and would definately return if we were staying in the area.

We can't wait to return to the Netherlands Inn and Spa next summer.
I happened upon this inn in a scramble to book one night on our trip. I really wanted to book a beautiful hotel with a pool yet I wanted to be able to feel secluded and enjoy the Lancaster county views. I got everything I wanted and more.
The Netherlands Inn and Spa is an exquisite establishment with an exceptional staff. The pool was just right for our three kids, ages 12, 6, and 2. There was also a very nice playground behind the main building of the Inn. What a nice surprise! Our room was exactly what I expected. I booked on their website and on their reservation page an exact picture that matched our room was displayed. The Inn was close to everything yet was private and secluded. The buildings were beautiful and the landscaping was meticulous. And to top it all off, the breakfast was wonderful. (Eggs, bacon, suasage, potatoes, french toast, cereal, toast, fruit, danish, juices, and coffee.) It was included in our room price! Oh I almost forgot that our kids wanted to swim again in the morning. So I called the front desk for a late check out. Of course! Instead of checking out at 11:00 am we were allowed to check out at 1:00 pm. (No charge!) So the kids got to enjoy the pool for a couple more hours. And we got a few more hours of peace. (If we had stayed another night we would have rented bicycles from the Inn to take a bike ride around the area.)

The front desk was so helpful with the late checkout and with directions to Intercourse,Pa. The staff at breakfast was engaging and attentive. Everyone was extremely pleasant and accomodating.

We were so sad to leave!! We will definitely be staying at the Netherlands Inn and Spa when we visit Lancaster County again!
(Next summer!)

The Netherlands Inn and Spa is located on beautiful grounds. My husband and I took our son there to see Thomas The Tank Engine at the near by railroad. Upon entering the grounds you are surrounded by beauty, HOWEVER....step into your room and you will find a smell that is horrible, spiders that look like something out of a science fiction movie, dust, dirt and the bathrooms...moldy and mildewy. The smell is awful. The most disgusting part was certainly the bathrooms and the spiders along with a massive infestation of flies. For $150 a night you would expect at least a clean room, and a spotless bathroom and beds that are cozy and comfy. The beds were like rocks, so forget about having a good nights sleep. This hotel...rather...motel is nothing like it says it is nor is it anything like what you see on the web. Just gross and we will not be staying there next year or any other time there after. Completely disgusted. Oh...and maid service...there is none. The maid comes and replaces your towels and trash bags...that's it. No making of the beds, or clean linens...no wash down of the sinks...nothing.

  • Liked — It's located 4 minutes from the railroad where my son could see Thomas The Tank and the grounds were stunning.
  • Disliked — Dirty, Outdated, Uncomfortable, Pest Problem, Not Worth the Money.

Do not even waste your time making a reservation! We have made reservations only to be called (sometimes the week we are to arrive) to say they have overbooked and can not accommodate us. It is very frustrating to then have to make last minute reservations at another hotel. It is a nice hotel but not worth the worry that they may have overbooked. Don't waste your time making a reservation, just book somewhere else from the start. We will from now on.

As a faith reader of Travel Advisor, I read others review of the Netherlands Inn and Spa after making reservations to take my best friend on a weekend getaway to celebrate her 40th Birthday in June. During early April, while in the area I decide to check the Inn for myself. So, I mustered up courage and walk through the doors of the Inn and was greeted by the front desk staff and by chance, the General Manager Michael Ritter. I spoke to them about my concerns and they couldn't have been nicer. Mr. Ritter showed me a few rooms and I found them both pleasant and clean, he then gave me his card and asked me to call him to let him know when we were arriving. We just returned 6/3/07 from 3 wonderful nights! The grounds were lovely with brick walks and manicured lawns, the rooms where tastefully decorated. Every one we encountered from the front desk to the the breakfast wait staff were very friendly and gracious. Spa Orange was very relaxing and we both enjoyed a wonderful massage by Kat and Lark. The Netherlands Inn and Spa is truly a grand old lady. I would not hesitate recommending the Netherlands Inn and Spa to anyone looking for a place to unwind and relax.
