“Quaint Cottage, Perfect Stay”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

I stayed in the cottage at the Artist's Inn with my boyfriend last weekend. It was a perfect weekend getaway from D.C. The cottage felt warm and welcoming, was spotless, and included everything we needed to cook all the delicacies we gathered at the farmer's markets around Lancaster. Jan was a wonderful host and easy to work with. Terre Hill was exactly the sort of place you go to get away from it all. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: If you want privacy and the ability to cook, the Cottage can't be beat!

Taylor - Thanks so much for posting. We hope you enjoyed the farmer's markets and the organic cheese farmer that we talked about. It was a pleasure to meet you both.

Since my husband and I could only escape our city for one night at this time, we chose to go to our favorite B&B. It was just as beautiful, welcoming and relaxing as we remembered. Jan and Bruce have a knack for making guests feel like family. Walking through the gallery of Bruce's pictures brought smiles and chuckles; looking at the outside view from the warmth of the interior of this lovely inn gave such a feeling of peace and of respect for this part of our country. We stayed in the large and very special Garden Suite. This suite has access to its own outside porch and has a view of three sides of the Inn. The king sized bed is very comfortable and is dressed in high-quality bed linens. The temperature in the room on a very cold and windy night was just perfect due to a fireplace located in the Jacuzzi room section of the suite. Breakfast was delicious and geared to my husband's request for a special diet. The lemon and poppy seed scones served with lemon curd were a great way to start our day. After three more courses, we were so sorry that we had to leave this special place and special people.

Room Tip: The Garden Suite is in the rear of the Inn and is large and quiet. The Rose Room and Kris Kringle ro...

What a restful get away for my husband and me. We were greeted at the door and given a tour of the house and our room. The room or should I say rooms were lovely. One room had a Jacuzzi tub, massage shower, fireplace and a daybed. The second room had a king sized bed and dressing area. My husband appreciated the cleanliness of the house. We could not have asked for a better stay. It was New Year's eve and the owners had a small party. So on this occasion, we had a dinner as well ! Everyone at the party brought something and it was delicious. The brunch the next morning was outstanding.

Room Tip: We would stay in the garden suite again.

Thanks David and Kim! We were so glad you could join us for our Annual New Year's Eve party - it's a tradition here for as many years as we've had the inn. And thanks for bringing the chocolate covered pretzels - they were yummy!

A beautiful house with antique furnishings, charming hosts, all the creature comforts you could ever want, and the best breakfast anywhere. This was my fourth time staying at the Artist's Inn and it's been great every time, thanks to Jan and Bruce.

Kent - It's always so good to see your family in December and catch up with everyone. Thanks for the kind words - and for telling your parents about the inn three years ago. Glad you were able to experience Lancaster County in snow!

We travel as a pair (2 couples) with the ILoveInn book about 3 to 4 times a year. We had Kris Kringle and Rose Rooms and stayed 2 nights. Jan and Bruce were perfect hosts and the 4-course breakfasts rank on top. Bruce has a gallery which is very interesting. A great area in Lancaster County and restaurants and things to see are limitless. A super trip and would rate our stay at the top of our list despite a freak snowstorm the first morning.

Room Tip: The Garden Suite is the largest of three. There is also a cottage which is great for a family or eve...

The cottage was wonderful & almost perfect except for 2 things: personally i didn't like the church bell ringing. My second problem was the locks, personally i like to lock doors. I didn't really feel secure in the cottage although i am from NY and PA is a very different setting but i still prefer to lock doors.

The main bedroom in the cottage was amazing! The bed was super comfortable! The Jacuzzi was amazing. We didn't use the 2nd bedroom since it was just my boyfriend and I. I loved how the owners made sure the cottage was clean, neat and they provided breakfast (milk, orange juice, 1 dozen eggs, cereal, cookies and snacks). The kitchen was nice and small with the cute decor! I also enjoyed the shades used in the bedroom cottage, it blocked out the sun light in the early mornings. The location was also good with nearby attractions and stores.

Room Tip: Stay at the cottage!

We’re so glad you enjoyed the cottage – thanks for your lovely comments about the décor. It really was a labor of love! We’d like to address your two concerns. The Westminster chimes are played from a 19th Century church about a block away. Most folks find them charming – especially since they start at 9 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy the church chimes, but we don’t have any control over them. We’re a bit puzzled about your door lock comment. Yes, Terre Hill is VERY safe, but it’s also important that our guests feel secure at the cottage. The front door has a deadbolt, the back door has a keyless lock and the code is changed frequently. Maybe you’re referring to the gardening shed door. That leads to the garage, where there is a door to the kitchen – but that, too, always remains locked. We’re so sorry you didn’t feel secure, and wish that you had given us the opportunity to address your concerns during your stay with us.

my boyfriend had recommended this place and having never been to a B&B before I'm glad we chose the artist inn. Upon arrival, Bruce greeted us warmly and showed us a tour of the inn which was beautifully and tastefully decorated with antiques and his own artwork which I enjoyed very much so as my boyfriend and myself are also artists. Since we were the only guest staying there at the time we were able to tour all three rooms, each was very different and all had great things to offer. We stayed in the Kris Kringle room which was perfect for us. Our favorite part was the warm and cozy fireplace. The heat paired with the extremely comfortable bed made it hard to get up each morning. We couldn't miss out on the most important part though-Breakfast! Both mornings we came downstairs to a beautifully decorated table, soon to be served a four course breakfast which was OUTSTANDING. as a picky eater I wasn't sure if I was going to care for the menu items but I must say Jan really worked her magic in the kitchen. The first day I was so full I had to skip out on lunch! For dinner that night we went to the Shady Maple smorgasbord which Bruce and Jan had recommended. Largest buffet I had been to and hands down one of the best! What I loved the most though about the inn was it was very intimate. It felt as if we had the house to ourselves (I mean we pretty much did) but Jan and Bruce were always around when something was needed. Their hospitality, cleanliness and attention to detail was immaculate. Needless to say, we will be returning again during the warmer months!

Alex - Thanks for posting a review. We're always happy to show first-time guests the B&B experience. You picked a wonderful time to visit - during the week so restaurants, stores and roads are less crowded. We're so glad you enjoyed your visit. Try us in the warmer months and enjoy the porches!
