Hood's is the kind of place that you might drive by thinking that is just for locals. It is true that almost everyone there knows everyone else BUT even a stranger will be greeted with a smile and given some of the best customer service you can get anywhere. Hood's is known for their BBQ. The Hoodie sandwich is a special favorite at lunch but don't miss the BBQ platter, the luncheon specials, the salads and, of course, the pies. You can take out or eat in. If it is nice, the picnic tables out back are clean and comfortable. Oh, and they do catering too!

Hood's is a small, family-run cafe and carry-out in Unionville, PA, 4 miles north of Kennett Square and 2 miles north of Willowdale. It's on PA 82 (also known here as Doe Run Road), just north of the intersection of PA 82 & PA 162. It's also across the road from the Unionville baseball fields, a source of local patronage. The whole family works here. They keep a close eye on things, and they want you to be happy with your visit and with your food.

Hood's doesn't look like much from the outside. In fact, you'd probably drive right by, if you didn't know what was inside. It's open for breakfast and lunch year-around. In Winter, it usually closes at 5:00 or 6:00 pm, depending on the night, and in Summer it's open until 8:00 pm every day; on Sundays year-around it closes at 3:00 pm. As with a good deli, it also has all sorts of snacks, chips and drinks.

Everyone comes to Hood's. It doesn't matter if you're the local landed gentry, owning 1,000 acres of horse farms, or a stablehand or a local farmer or a visitor to the area, everyone comes to Hood's. They cater local events such as the various equestrian competitions, and they've provided catering for movies that have been filmed in the area. Everything is fresh-made. Breakfast can be regular egg and meat plates, as well as breakfast burritos, pancakes and omelettes. For lunch and dinner, the deli sandwiches are large. The pork barbeque is delicious, both as a sandwich and on a platter. The namesake sandwich is The Hoodie, which is pulled pork and their own sauce on a kaiser roll, along with provolone and cole slaw. And on weekends, Larry barbeques both chicken and baby back ribs on the smoker. The website shows all of the menu choices, as well as whether they're on Winter or Summer hours.

We've catered a dozen meals with Hood's food, and all the meals have been successful. When friends and family come to visit us, they want us to take them to where the barbeque came from.

Freshly remodeled and renovated, there's a more spacious dining room (although still not large), so you have a better chance of getting a table.

It's not the sort of place you'd make a special effort to drive to from Philadelphia or Wilmington just to go to a really good local cafe, but it's well worth stopping in if you're in the area, spending a day in the country. Excellent for breakfast or lunch, and also a great choice for food for a picnic in the achingly beautiful local countryside; also very good for ordering carry-out to take home or to a friend's for dinner.
