If you are looking for a spacious room with modern updates this is not the place for you. The rooms are small and the bathroom even smaller, but the atmosphere is great. The lobby has a wonderful fireplace and a terrific sitting area. The lounge has delicious snack food on the menu and another crackling fireplace. The homey atmosphere induces conversation with the friendly locals. The staff ischeerful and helpful. The town is altogether great.

Wellsboro may be a sleepy little town, but the Penn Wells is not the place to sleep. If you think this is a "lovely hotel" - then you haven't stayed a decent hotel. Ancient, threadbare, grungy carpet. Cold, small, cramped, overpriced rooms. Headboard-less bed frame. Brass-like lamps (maybe plastic?). Very small bathroom - needed to step over toilet to get in and out of the shower. The heat was not on and during the night It was in 30's-40's. When the heat was finally turned on, it was only during the night-time hours. Don’t forget drafty. Should have brought a blanket from home. Had a lovely view of "THE" traffic light in town and was repeatedly awoken by the 18 wheelers barreling through town in the middle of the night. There are no plans to return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Previously stayed at Sherwood Motel; although not very good, it is much better than the Penn Wells

When we entered the hotel, we were greeted by a very friendly front desk person. I must say that if you are able to imagine yourself in the time period when this hotel was built, you are in for the experience of a lifetime. When you enter the hotel, the lobby is spacious and well appointed, with plenty of seating space for relaxing or just visiting or dreaming. The lounge has a beautiful fireplace as the focal point of the room and the there is a small collection of beer steins on the mantle. The Mary Wells dining room is decorated with historic photos along the walls and the atmosphere is great. My wife and I had breakfast and dinner there and were very satisfied with the service and the meals. The attitude of the entire staff was superb and each one we met made us feel welcome and did all they could to make our stay enjoyable. My wife and I are not accustomed to staying in an historic hotel and were surprised when we arrived, however, after getting acquainted with the history of the hotel and the time period when it was constructed, we were able to imagine that we were travelling in that time. I strongly recommend staying at the Penn Wells Hotel at least once and experience the wonderful history it holds.

Room Tip: We had a two room suite and while the rooms are small, the space was adequate for a hotel of this ti...

We had stayed at the Hotel in the spring and decided to try the Lodge when we returned in July. The rooms are larger at the Lodge and having the pool right there is nice. But the rooms could have used more attention. We checked in on Thursday. Climbing the stairs we noticed beer bottles on the ground. They were picked up Saturday. After we got into the room we found a grocery bag of trash under on of the beds. EVERYTHING needs updated. The carpets needed a better cleaning than just vacuuming. Our remote did not work. When we called the office they told us to stop at the desk and get some batteries the next time we came by. The pool is refreshing and they provide towels but again everything needs updated. Everything in the pool room was rusted and needing a coat of paint. For the price of the room, they could do better. Between the Hotel and the Lodge, I would probably stay at the Hotel just as long as you did not much room.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Penn Wells but most of all the staff was fantastic. Dave at the front desk went beyond the call of duty to assist me and I was met with a beautiful smile everyday from Carol in the dining room. Sherry the room attendant was simply the best and kept my room very clean on a daily basis. The Penn Wells gets the thumbs up from me.

Sincerly,
Dionne Stokes

I must admit that I was seriously considering cancelling the reservation I had made after I booked for Labor Day weekend. In fact, I even called the hotel and spoke to Dave the night before and read him all the not-so-good reviews. After talking to him, however, we still came for the weekend--we were glad we did. The hotel is old, but I found it to be very charming. It is all up to safety code. We were in Room 207 right next to the vending machine/ice area. There was a queen bed, two dressers, two rockers, closet and a small bathroom. It did not smell, it was not horrible. I think anyone who books here should read the history of the place. I found all the front desk staff to be exceptionally helpful in planning our itinerary and offering suggestions. We ate breakfast on Saturday in the hotel's dining room--not worth the money at all. I was not impressed. Bagels were advertised, none were on the buffet. The pastries were tasteless and much of the food was cold. It is nice to walk less than a block to the Lodge for the pool and hot tub. The Lodge is undergoing major renovations. The pool attendant explained the entire renovation process to us that should be ready by next summer. We got there about 6:15PM and stayed until 7:30 when all the kids came down. The city of Wellsboro is very clean and safe, very family-oriented. The movie theater Arcadia is right next door: $20 for 2 tix and snacks on a Friday night. (Where we come from, you can't even get into the movies for that price.) We ate at the diner across the street three times, that's how good it was. Don't miss the hot roast beef sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. We had dinner on Saturday night at The Steak House--OK, nothing to brag about. The drive to the canyon is about 20 mins. Be sure to watch the short video. We did that Saturday morning, and then we drove to the railroad station for the 1PM Tioga train ride for 1 1/2 hrs. to Lake Hammond. Nice. I definitely will return.

Okay yes the hotel is old and the worn furniture is from the 60s and the rooms are small and the bathrooms are not in great shape...but we found it to be clean, the linens and towels to be clean and in good shape. No smells of pine sol or mold..just the usual hotel smell. The hotel staff, front desk, bar and diningroom were all very friendly and helpful. We slept well on the somewhat worn mattress. I'd stay there again, no problem. Diningroom was well maintained and the PennWell signature salad was YUM!
