“Our Get-Away Weekend @ Whitewing farm”
Reviewed 13 March 2014

Once a working farm, the outbuildings have been converted into rooms and "suites" with some distance and privacy from each other. Our room, the hackney suite, was spacious, impeccably clean with excellent linens and towels, a great king bed with just the right firmness, and a working gas fireplace. We chose to have a late lunch in Chads Ford and returned to Whitewing with a bottle of wine and picnic for supper later on. First we talked with Sandy about the history of the farm and then we went for a long walk around the grounds. The reception/check-in area is built on the original hay barn foundation and has a comfortable, welcoming feel with lots of natural light and great views. There are always snacks, homemade cookies, and goodies available here and any kind of hot beverage you want. It is well-stocked with china and stemware and you are free to take your choices to your room. We asked Sandy to find us a board game and returned to our room to enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening with our gas fireplace and a nice bottle of wine. Although we had a neighbor next to us, we never heard a thing. It is very quiet at Whitwing at night. Next morning at the hay barn, we found a table for two by a window and Lance cooked and served us a very well- presented full breakfast. Lance has just the right personality for first thing in the morning chatter, and it becomes clear why he is a successful Chef and restaurant owner. Because of the layout and quality, Whitewing Farm is far different from most BBs. The setting is old but the rooms and conveniences are brand new. Add to this the personal charm and interest that Lance and Sandy show for each of their guests, and you know why Whitewing's ratings are so high. We will return soon.

Room Tip: Talk to Sandy about your expectations. The pictures are accurate.

We booked a room at Inn at White Wing Farm two months ago to celebrate our anniversary this past weekend. When we arrived, the owners informed us that the pipes had frozen to our room and rebooked us at another Inn whose room was NOT comparable to the one we had booked. The owners did not offer to compensate us in any way for the inconvenience (in another similar situation, the Innkeeper paid for the night at the other Inn AND gave us a voucher for a future FREE weekend.) We realize things can happend that are beyond control, but it's how the matter is handled that make all the difference to us

Sandy S, Owner at Inn at Whitewing Farm B&B, responded to this review, 30 March 2014
When we discovered the Pond House pipes had frozen our first action was to contact you to provide awareness of the situation prior to your arrival. We were unable to reach you and our B&B was fully booked so changing or upgrading your room was not possible. We made reservations on your behalf at another local B&B that we consider being comparable to ours (nicer in some aspects) as a contingency. We were so relieved they had an available room. We anticipated you would enjoy your stay with them and considered the inconvenience to be minimal. Your expectation that we would pick up the cost for your stay elsewhere and provide a voucher for a free stay at a later date is not one we are able to meet under the circumstances. Had the problem with the pipes occurred while you were our guest, we would have taken action to correct the situation. If that meant relocating you elsewhere, we would have picked up the cost as well as provide a voucher for a free stay. While we do recognize you were inconvenienced, the level of inconvenience did not and does not warrant additional compensation.

We heard about Whitewing Farm from a friend who lives in the area, and booked it for our 14th anniversary weekend. Sandy and Lance were great hosts (Sandy handled check-in, Lance did the breakfast cooking and presentation), and did a wonderful job of making us feel welcome. Both of them are people who love people (although how many B&Bs are run by folks who are not?); if you prefer hosts who don't talk to you and just shove your food in front of you, you need to look elsewhere. Lance also owns an Italian restaurant that serves lunch and dinner, and I can't help but think he likes being able to try fancy dishes for breakfast (both food and presentation were top quality). The room we had (the Jockey room) looked like it had been finished last month; everything was in perfect shape, the bathroom was spotless and modern, and the mattress was a wonder to sleep on. (Oh, and somebody likes to have fun with the new towels -- we had a "towel animal" greet us on our arrival and the next day after the room was made up.) Our hosts were happy to help with questions about the area. Normally we go to a different B&B for each anniversary (personal tradition), but my wife feels we should maybe make an exception for the Inn at Whitewing Farm.

Room Tip: The Jockey Room has a library! Mysteries, thrillers, even cook books!

Just spent two nights at the inn Feb 15-17 for Valentine's weekend and let me start off by saying this may be the cleanest public place I have ever experienced. Lance and Sandy have done a terrific job filling the inn and guest rooms with beautiful antiques and little touches like hand-made bed skirts and other examples of their attention to detail. You have to be people-oriented to own a B&B but our hosts could not have been more friendly and engaging. We really enjoyed spending time with Lance and Sandy (and daughter Sam) as they shared with us the history of the inn and how they converted the property that had fallen into disrepair into the lovely jewel it has now become primarily through their own sweat equity. As a chef with 30 years experience, Lance's home-made breakfasts were superb. For Valentine's he added heart-shaped watermelon garnishes and for President's Day he served a red white and blue offering of waffles with blueberries, strawberries and whipped cream. Each day he made wonderful breads with different ingredients such as cranberries and bananas. We stayed in the Paddock Room which was nicely appointed, meticulously clean and close to the main house. All rooms have TV's and private bathrooms. The first couple we met were making their third visit to the inn and were already looking forward to a return visit. We enjoyed a visit to Longwood Gardens, the Brandywine Museum of Art, Chadds Ford Winery and several antique galleries. We also had a wonderful dinner at Limoncello's. Thanks again to Lance and Sandy for a wonder long weekend.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Paddock Room. It was very clean and comfortable.

We stayed at the Inn at Whitewing Farm for three days, including New Year's Eve, along with another couple. Our rooms were the Hackney and the Clydesdale, two of the suites on the property. Both of the rooms were very spacious, clean and comfortable, with fireplaces. The inn has a lovely setting in the Brandywine Valley, which was very convenient for our visits to Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, the Nemours Mansion, and Brandywine River Museum.

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers that Lance and Sandy did a great job welcoming us and helping us with questions about the locale. Lance's freshly-prepared breakfasts are a real treat -- delicious and works of art. Even on our final day there, when we had to leave early to catch our train, Lance made sure that we had fresh-from-the-oven cinnamon muffins to take with us. The breakfast room itself is quite large and airy, and has snacks and beverages available all the time.

We had researched several possible inns and hotels for this trip, and were very glad we had chosen this inn -- it was ideal for us.

My husband took me to Whitewing Farm for a birthday weekend.
It is beautiful. We stayed in the Jockey room. It was tastefully decorated, very clean and comfortable.
The innkeepers, Lance and Sandy made us feel welcome and made sure our room was just right and comfortable.
Breakfast was delicious and served with a smile, in the great room. This area is warm and cozy with a fireplace, comfy seating, and is always open. You can come in anytime to have a hot or cold drink and snacks.
We had a wonderful time here and will definitely return.

We spent two days at Whitewing Farm with two other couples. We stayed in the three rooms in the carriage house. We had stayed with Sandy and Lance last August and were anxious to go back. They are fantastic hosts. Sandy made sure our dinner reservations were with good local restaurants and Lance is so much fun to hang with as he makes your delicious breakfast. We were there to see Longwood Gardens Christmas display and the Inn is 5 minutes away. All I can say is the six of us had a wonderful fun time. Thank you Lance and Sandy...We will be back. By the way the rooms are comfortable and cozy...PERFECT
