In traveling from Upstate NY to Washington, DC, we looked for a place to stop for the night. We found Hillard House, and had a comfortable stay. The inn is in a large house built in 1865. It has a lovely garden and comfortable rooms decorated with antiques. Cecilia and Gordon were great hosts and really knowledgable about local history. Breakfast was delicious. The inn is located within the boundaries of the Wilkes University campus and along the Susquehana River. The only downside (and not much of one) was the location about 10 to 15 minutes off Interstate-81. Gordon's directions in and out were easy to follow and spot on.

My wife Sandy and I travel to the Wilkes-Barre area rather frequently. The Hillard House provides us with a place where we can settle in, attend to family matters in the area, sleep comfortably, and have a delicious breakfast and pleasant company in the morning. The nearby walking paths along the Susquehanna River provide opportunities for exercise ranging from leisurely to vigorous, and the views are quite wonderful. Simply put, Cecilia and Gordon do a great job. Gordon is also a virtual docent on many aspects of the history and geography of the region should that be of interest.

We stayed at the Hillard House for a recent weekend away to visit friends in the Wilkes-Barre area, and had a lovely time. The house is beautiful, yet comfortable, with welcoming common areas. We benefited from the exquisite vintage mini-elevator, as I was on crutches following surgery. While I had to navigate the few stairs up to the front of the house, it could not have been easier to get up and down from the room. This was a major plus for us, as we love B&Bs, but most of the time you have to deal with many stairs.

We stayed in the Gold Room, which was comfortable, spacious and quiet. My husband and I both found the mattress soft, but I'm sure it wouldn't bother most people - we have a personal preference for firm mattresses.

Cecilia and Gordon were unbelievably helpful. Right from the start when I emailed them with questions, they were responsive and friendly. My husband has some complicated dietary restrictions which Cecilia took in her stride, providing us both with delicious breakfasts. They voluntarily printed us out directions to various locations we were visiting and gave us great advice on nearby local restaurants.

We were also happy to find out that they are ok with having kids stay, as so many B&Bs aren't. We may well be back with our little one (due in 3 months).

You're simply not going to find something in this price range in this area that offers the amenities and personal care that Gordon and Cecilia at the Hillard House do. The house retains its 1860's extra-tall ceilings and classic feel, while offering refurbished and modernized facilities and the little personal touches that turn a set of spare bedrooms into a real B&B experience. The elevator helps with bags or handicapped individuals, and Gordon and Cecilia were EXTREMELY accommodating with enthusiastically imparting us information about what to see and where to eat our first time in Wilkes-Barre. It was the day that we rolled back clocks for the end of DST, and Cecilia even took the time to set the clocks in the room back for us before we got there. Wine and cheese and fresh fruit on arrival, amazing breakfast the next morning...all in all a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: The Gold Room was well-appointed and very comfortable.

My husband and I spend our wedding night as guests here and it couldn't have been more perfect. The room was exquisite - beautifully decorated and appointed, spotless and very comfortable. Cecilia and Gordon were wonderful hosts - warm and welcoming. If we ever have reason to travel to Wilkes-Barre again, we will definitely stay here.

Room Tip: There are only 3 rooms in this B&B. The Gold and Rose rooms are on the second floor. No noise...

We arrived late but Gordon carried our bags in and helped us get settled in the Gold room. It was immaculate and beautiful, as is the entire house. The bed was very comfortable (though squeeky!) and the breakfast Cecelia made was one of the best I've had at any B & B. The house is on an old residential street a few blocks from the college. The walk along the canal at night is very nice and well-lit and Gordon was very kind to call ahead to make sure Toscana Cafe was serving so we could have a superb dinner. Hillard House is a wonderful place to stay with top-notch service from the owners!!

This B&B is a great place to stay in Wilkes-Barre. We arrived late, after riding a huge storm all the way from Washington DC, and found our room very comfortable and cozy. Our hosts directed us to a good Italian restaurant nearby, and phoned ahead to make sure the kitchen stayed open for us. We had a great time over a very good breakfast the next morning, and felt like we were leaving old friends. We will certainly try to stay at Hillard house next time we travel from Virginia back to our home in Ontario, Canada.
