I've been seeing great performances here for decades! First one for me was KIX in the early '80s. More recently: Frampton, Robert Cray/Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Doobie Brothers, and Asia. Thank goodness little old York can lay claim to a venue that gets top entertainers in an intimate setting. There is parking in nearby lots, garages, and on the street if you get lucky. People often get dropped off and picked up out front afterward, which is also an option.
Don't be afraid of "being downtown at night", because you have safety in numbers if you come and go with the flow of all those other people. I usually see the police cruising around most nights anyway.
If there was a politeness award, the volunteers here would win it, hands down. A lot of retirees staff the Strand, and clearly enjoy their work.
Only two things need improvement: Mixing the sound so that it's not overdriven and muddy sometimes, and security. Every now and then you have a guest who unfortunately needs to be thrown out, and they hesitate to do this. Maybe a few linebackers to serve as security would do the trick? As for the sound, have some volunteers around the venue report back to the sound crew ASAP if something needs adjusted.
You can pick your seats out online, and if you ever need to cancel your reservations, you can do so without a fee or a fuss.
The Strand is a beautiful, historical gem of a venue that I hope will be preserved for generations to come. If you have the means, please consider becoming a supporting member!
