The Sea Whale Motel was wonderful. The owners friendly and attentive. We had everything we could need. It was clean with a pretty view of the pond. We were on the top floor with balcony! I would definitely stay on the top as the deck with the view was beautiful! The beds were comfortable. There was a microwave and frig. A pull out couch! It was close to Easton Beach, but we weren't fond of the beach itself. Was smelly and LOTS of nasty red seaweed. We really enjoyed second beach and gooseberry (which was our favorite) both within very close driving distance. Not more than 7 or 8 minutes. Well worth the fees to get in. Motel very close to downtown Newport, very continent. Maybe 5 or 10 minutes to downtown. All in all a wonderful stay, will be back next year!

Thank you for taking the time to write your lovely review. Yes, although most of our back is Newport and our front is Middletown, we are just 2 miles away from the center of Newport. We look forward to your stay with us next year!

We booked this motel due to the overwhelmingly positive reviews we read on TripAdvisor; and the place does have much to recommend it:
1) The location, at least on the side toward Easton Pond, is very nice and picturesque. The upper deck of the motel affords a beautiful view towards Newport.
2) Although the motel is not new, it is very well maintained; and it is apparent that the owners have kept it in tip-top shape over the years.
3) Free wifi in all rooms.
4) Convenient location near the heart of Newport, nearby restaurants and a local beach.
5) Friendly check-in personnel.

That said, there were some other factors that compromised our one-night stay at the Sea Whale Motel. The rooms are relatively small, so we had some issues finding the right fit for our entire family of five. Since the beds are not queen size, but only "double", we had to choose a solution that put one of our children on a fold-out sofa, which proved to be a less than satisfactory night's sleep for her. Also, since we were on the top floor, there was considerable noise from the adjacent road, which is very busy. I bolted the door shut, tried to insulate the door with excess pillows, but ultimately failed to block the noise. Fortunately, the road did quiet down after midnight -- but not our neighbors. Our room (#27) had a connecting door to #26; and the group in that room was having a rip-roaring time well past midnight; and we heard everything, which was not a positive testimony to the thickness of the walls. A bang on the wall silenced the ruckus; but I fear this just moved them over to room #25, which had a connecting door to our children's room. And there, the party apparently continued until 2:00 AM, much to the chagrin of our children, who are not as brash as I am and did not express their displeasure. When we got up the next morning, there was nobody at the hotel reception to return the keys to, so we just left them in the room and departed, which I hope was the right thing to do. Finally, in comparison to other places we stayed at during our trip, the value for money was out of whack: the Sea Whale Motel is a nice place, but I would have expected more for the price.

Room Tip: Go for a lower room: they are quieter (no road noise).

Thank you for choosing us for your stay in the Newport area. First, I would like to address the room issue. You were booked into rooms 26 (2 double beds) and 23 (single queen bed with a full size sofa-sleeper), not in room 27 which adjoins 28. Not sure where the confusion with the room numbers came in but those were your rooms. We normally keep rooms together when a guest books 2 or more but as you booked the reservation close to the check-in date, guests were already in rooms 24 and 25.

Next, I would like to address the noise issue. Not sure if you'll remember this but at check-in, the business card with the Wi-Fi password also had the 2 phone numbers to call if there were any issues we needed to address, especially noise. I specifically tell guests these are 24 hour lines. One of those numbers is my cell. Although no other guests complained the following morning, we have no doubt this is true. It can happen and sometimes we are not aware unless you call us to let us know. I definitely would have addressed the issue. Guests usually understand and are not always aware that their voices carry as they do. You should not have been subjected to "banging" on the wall to get them to quiet down! I could simply have asked them to "take it to the lawn" downstairs and across the parking lot. That may have helped. That being said, I'm confused as to why you simply didn't call. My cell number is even on the office door when we're closed. This is one issue my husband and I handle very well and wish you had made the choice to do so. You definitely would have all had a better night's sleep! There are hotel laws and local ordinances regarding noise.

We are a traditional Mom-n-Pop Motel. We actually live here at the motel, in the owners' quarters, 3 doors down from where your children were staying. Rooms sizes are standard for a motel built in 1955. These are not mini-suites, or even over-sized rooms, which you see in many of the hotels built in more recent years. I like to believe our name is truly indicative of who we are, which is why we don't change it: a motel (not hotel) and looking at the website pictures, you can see it is an older motel with standard size rooms. We don't pretend to be otherwise. Thank you for the compliment on the maintenance in your review. Although we are not perfect, we really do try.

Finally, regarding the office being closed...... We do not have a 24 hour front desk but we do live here. There is a sign on the door, and again, with my cell, and we have a door bell. We are family run, do much of the work ourselves and go to sleep some time during the night and re-open in the morning. I had no idea you were leaving that early. We waited until 11:00 a.m. before we went into the rooms because that is the check-out time here at the motel. That's when we found the keys. Not a problem because you paid at check-in the day before.

Although you were not happy with all aspects of our facility, thank you for taking the time to write your review. It also gives us a chance to re-clarify who we are and what we're all about.

Best Always..... Happy Travels!!!

The Sea Whale was a great spot to return to after spending the day touring mansions and downtown Newport. Everything we needed was easily available, comfortable beds, ice, refrigerator and an easy walk to a variety of restaurants.
The salt pond view is peaceful and serene, the perfect setting for pre-dinner cocktails or early morning coffee.

Room Tip: Pay the extra $10. for a second floor room with access to the deck.

Me and my girls were looking for a place to stay and found this lovely place. The view from the back lounge chairs and Adirondack chairs is beautiful...could spend the day and night out there. The rooms were very clean, and for the four of us very roomy. I would absolutely stay here again!

Not just spotless, but sparkling clean. The owners have thought of everything -- every last detail -- to make your stay here a top-notch experience. Among other things, a really comfortable bed, soft towels, good pillows, every amenity we could possibly want or need. We have already booked another stay there for August!

My mother and I started staying here almost 17 years ago when I was visiting nearby Roger Williams University. We fell in love with Newport & the Sea Whale immediately. The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean, Newport is very close & the beach is right across the street. We have yet to find a better location in the Newport/Middletown/Aquidneck area! I just booked our room for the Boat Show in September and I can't wait. The Sea Whale is a "classic" motel in a gorgeous New England town.

Room Tip: Sunsets over Easton's Pond are gorgeous and a deck room will give you the best view. You also ge...
