Bay Street offers a variety of shops for strolling, checking out the windows and making purchases but the area behind the waterside stores is fabulous. Lovely landscaped walking areas along the water with large "porch" swings placed so the inland waterway traffic is clearly visible. You can also watch as the bridge and that goes to lady's Island opens and closes hourly for water traffic. There is a fun Candy Store in one of the "cut throughs" from bay street as well as a coffee house. Swinging is hard work so it is always good to take a treat to keep up ones strength.

Downtown Beaufort offers a nice selection of unique shops to suite various tastes. A couple of restaurants offer a welcome break from the shopping. Further down Bay Street are some beautiful old antebellum style homes facing the waterfront. All in all, its a nice place to spend a few hours on a pretty day.

Such a beautiful street with historic houses, shopping and amazing restaurants. It takes you right to the water front.

My wife and I walked around this area during our stay in Beaufort. We enjoyed the carriage tour of the historical district and seeing the wonderful old homes here. We enjoyed walking the streets in the tourist areas off Bay Street and eating at the wonderful restaurants, especially those with seafood. We also enjoyed walking along the Waterfront Park on the Beaufort River on the backside of Bay Street and sitting on the decks of the restaurants there.

Bay Street is a lovely place to walk or do a slow drive to see antebellum homes all along the waterfront, and then check out the business district full of unique shops. Being there in the fall means we avoided what must be massive crowds during the summer so we were able to find street parking and enjoy a relaxing afternoon strolling through the area. There are horse-drawn trolley tours available but we explored on our own. Note: There are no public bathrooms in the shopping area so be prepared to walk down to the marina.
