“Beautiful place!”
Reviewed 5 July 2014

We only stayed for a night while we were passing through, it was extremely crowded with only two sites remaining, I read online that the sites were around $18-30 depending on the site and we just wanted the cheapest as we only had a tent and didn't need anything else. When we arrived the lady we booked with neglected to mention the price and we found out after booking that we had been given a site big enough for about 4 cars and 2 tents which was $37 for the night. It was partly my fault for not asking the price before booking but that was a bit annoying when I was expecting a lot cheaper for a site (especially when you can get a cheap motel room for that price).
Anyway the site was lovely with deer wandering around and down the road the state park was wonderful, we ended up spending majority of the day there. Would definitely go back there, but I will be booking online to make sure of the price and what I am paying for.

We spent 4 nights at Hunting Island in campsite #114 the second week of June 2014. Lovely campground but the neighbors gave us so little space that the space between our SUV and their tent was inches. Additionally, we had a trail behind our site that led to the bath house and everyone felt like it was okay to walk through our campsite to get there. We definitely plan on returning but the campsite has distinctly different areas and depending on what you are looking for, choose wisely. Near the front (beach view) is extremely packed but if you really want a beach view go there. The rows behind that some are nice but again, pretty crowded and not much privacy. They are larger however. If you move toward the back, the sites are spacious and private, more shaded but you have a longer walk to the beach and to the store. The store is very nice, offering ice, cold beverages, snacks, and camping essentials. Plenty of wildlife ranging from raccoons to dear that feed right from your hands they are so tame. I made the mistake of trying to pet a feral cat and she scratched me. Dumb mistake! The beach is very nice. Definitely one of our favorite campgrounds but we just didn't get a great campsite. Restaurants and grocery stores are not very close (about 17-20 miles away) so plan your grocery shopping ahead of time before you get to the island. There are a few great fish markets on the way offering fresh caught fish and shrimp. The fish market we went to was called Gay's.

We tent camped in mid-June for 2 nights and loved it! We had a trail-side sight which was very private and I would highly recommend. I was afraid of what kind of bugs might exist in the low-country, but we didn't have any problems with creep-crawlies, we did use tiki-torches and bug spray. We also had a lot of shade. Our tent site was a quick 5 minute walk to the beach, lots of people had bicycles, I would definitely consider renting one if I were staying for a longer time. There is a kayak and bicycle rental store close to the park. The beach is beautiful!!! It is pretty awesome to look on the beach and see forest, not parking lots and hotels! The beach was clean and you can walk a great distance in both directions. Plus, the campground was full when we were there, and the beach wasn't overcrowded. The park store was convenient and carried any last-minute supplies that you might need. We bought fresh fish at a road side market about 2 miles from the campground, which was phenomenal! They had a selection of shrimp, grouper, flounder, swordfish, and more! Be careful to lock your food well, raccoons were abundant and not shy! Bathrooms and showers were easily located throughout the park and were decently clean. Outdoor showers were also available if you just want to rinse off. We can't wait to come back!!

Room Tip: If you are tent camping and want shade and privacy, consider one of the trail-side sites.

My family and friend spent two nights in tents at Hunting Island Sate Park in SC. It was Awesome, we were back in the woods away for the other campers. The kids really enjoyed it too. The bugs weren't too bad! Deep Woods Bug Spray is a life saver. The ticks were a pain but, that goes with the territory ( we were in their space:)) The deer came to visit us at our site several times, pretty neat for both the adults and kids. Even though we were tucked back in the woods it was just a short walk to the beach. It would be nice if the park could do something to control the raccoon population, they were a little too comfortable with people even in the daylight. Over all it was a great experience and we will DEFINITELY be back again....maybe even stay longer next time:)

We don't live far from here so we go often. It is a great place to relax. The wildlife is great, from deer to sea turtles. You can take the stairs to the top of the lighthouse and walk all the way around on a cat walk and see the entire island. There are picnic areas, some historical things to see, and a little store in the park if you want a drink or souvenir. It's usually not extremely crowded.

If you are going to camp here get as close to the beach as possible or the mosquito will eat you alive! We camped at the walk in campsites for 1 night before having to get a hotel, I thought those things were going to fly off with my kid!!!! We used 5 types of bug repellent and it didnt faze them! 96 bites in one night on my daughter. I really wish we would have paid extra to be right on the beach were the breezes keep them away, those sites looked perfect and were mosquito free! Oh well live and learn.
