“Great Location - Friendly Staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

If you are looking for outstanding location in Charleston, this is it! Walking distance to all of the great sights in Charleston. Free bus service passes within a 1/2 block of the front door - with easy service to visitors center! Wonderful location - highly recommended. I travel a lot and really enjoyed the friendly staff and location.

I recently stayed at the Hilton DoubleTree in Charleston over New Year's. I should start by saying that I am a frequent traveler who spends 150+ nights in hotels each year. Further, I have recently spent a good deal of time in the DoubleTree in St. Louis and am familiar with the hotel brand. My fiance and I spent New Year in Charleston and made a reservation for 4 nights -- we paid for two nights with cash and used points for the other two nights. On the positive -- the location of the hotel is fantastic for exploring Old Charleston. However, the poor service outweighed any benefits of the location. When we checked in, we were informed that we were upgraded to a suite. However, our room was not ready. Since we hadn't asked for an early check-in, this was not ideal, but understandable. However, when we got to our room, it was not a suite and seemed like a very basic room. The front desk clerk told us we would receive turn down service each evening. After the first night when we did not receive this, I asked at the front desk and was told that they probably skipped our room since we checked in that day. This was not acceptable, but we were offered no further help or explanation. When I inquired after the second night when we still did not receive turn down service, the front desk clerk indicated we had been checked in incorrectly and my Hilton status was not reflected to indicate turn down service. On the third day when we returned to our room in the afternoon after a run and wanted to take a shower, we discovered our towels had been removed (even though we'd hung them on the hooks) and no new towels had been brought. When we inquired of the housekeeping staff, they indicated we would get them sometime that day. It was several hours later when the towels were delivered. Finally, on the last day when we asked for late checkout, the first front desk clerk would not help us and told us to call back later. In the interim, our flight was cancelled, making the late checkout even more important. When we called back to the front desk to request the checkout, they first said it would not be possible. After a detailed explanation by my fiance of our situation, the front desk clerk left us on hold for more than 15 minutes inquiring about options. We finally had to hang up and call back to get service, where we were only granted a 2-hour extension. The overall stay was extremely disappointing as the service we received was sub par on many different occasions.

From the moment we pulled in, the service we received was top notch. The valet was extremely friendly and helpful, the front desk greeted us with a smile and room service was great (we needed milk at midnight for our baby girl and was told it was not on the menu but they would figure something out. Five minutes later there was a knock at the door with a small carafe of milk). The room was great and extremely comfortable (we stayed in a one bedroom suite with 2 double beds). Within walking distance to so many amazing little shops and restaurants/bar. Will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Charleston and would DEFINITELY recommend this lovely hotel to anyone who is in the area.

This Doubletree is OK, but just OK, and does not quite live up to the standard of the brand. It's hard to say why this is so: the rooms are spacious, well cleaned, and include good amenities in the bath and coffee area. But it just doesn't have a cozy or comfortable feel for some reason. No matter: you'll spend most of your time in Charleston outside your hotel, so if you just need a conveniently located, solid place that's a decent value, this hotel is a good bet.

My son and new daughter-in-law live in Charlotte, NC and planned their destination wedding for the Historic Charleston Doubletree Hilton. What a wonderful choice they made. From the time we checked in, until we checked out they made a point of making us feel welcomed. Kate Neville and Amber helped plan and coordinate the most beautiful wedding that we ever could have imagined. Most of the bridal party stayed in the courtyard rooms which was so convenient for the wedding in the courtyard, cocktail party under the tent and reception in the ballroom. We could not have asked for a better weekend wedding. Everyone had so much fun.The rain stopped and the sun came out just a few hours before they said their vows. What more could you ask for?

PROS: Free wireless, decent rooms, affordable laundry facility, nice courtyard, has a gym, excellent location, warm cookie on arrival CONS: one of the valets was a little too insistent on receiving a tip before giving me my car keys, expensive parking, no-non valet parking, no pool, no included breakfast, housekeeping could have done a little better, walls a little thin (lots of coughing next door) I had a decent stay. The value for it's location was alright but parking really adds a lot to the overall cost. There is a lot of food and shopping within walking distance. The french quarter, the aquarium, the market, lots of restaurants, etc. are all nearby. Some of the valets were a little insistent for tips but everyone else was rather nice.

Good location for doing the touristy stuff but with so many other hotel options, doubt I would return. For one, I was surprised there was not a bar. Nor an on-site restaurant. Stayed in the bi-level room which was great as one kid could watch TV upstairs and the other downstairs (i.e., no arguing about what to watch). It was weird there is a small "kitchenette" on the lower level with no towels/soap available so had to bring those down from upper level. Had to call maintenance twice for toilet issues. The furniture on the lower level was very worn. Bathroom upstairs was unbelievably small so I'm sorry to write this but if you are on the larger size, don't even think about it! Also, moldy shower head which was just gross. The bathroom sink is outside of the bathroom so you will have to request privacy from others in your party in order to get dressed. No cups/glasses available upstairs (those were downstairs). On the plus side, the beds were super comfortable. There are vending machines available but the one our floor took our money twice and we had to go downstairs to the front desk to be reimbursed. The breakfast was very good and the server (Angelina) was absolutely wonderful.
