Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

“A Must-See in Charleston”
Reviewed 5 November 2013

This is a great place to visit in Charleston to really get a sense of historic life. They do a great job of preserving this old gem, and it's neat to be able to take the self-guided tour and imagine what life would have been like in the 1800s. I'd recommend this house as part of a must-see tour in Charleston.

“Untouched in Years”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

Self guided in it;s almost original form, this house is a great representation of how the elite lived in that period. It is wonderful to be able to walk trough at your own pace and view the belongings of the Rhett family while listening to what I call a day in the life of an elite, or a slave. The slaves quarters are true to form as is the stable and the Gothic style privvy's in the corner of the yard. Truly a fascinating tour.

“Good self-guided tour”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

The house and the history of its owners were very interesting, and since it's preserved, but not restored, you really are witnessing the authentic home. The audio tour is very good and part of the admission price. The tour moves along and takes a little less than an hour.

“Great Historical Home”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

A great tour to get the feel of life in the 1800's. The home is beautiful and you can combine with another one for a better rate which was a nice way to compare and tour the historic Charleston area. There are museum and home passes available but we only had time to do the two homes. The tour was informative and very interesting.

“A Charming Piece of Charleston History”
Reviewed 30 October 2013 credit card Amex Cardmember Review

This Charleston mansion provides a real flavor of the lives of the wealth in the 1800's. The personal cassette tour provides wonderful detail about the building and the lives and times of those who lived and worked their while allowing visitors the opportunity to explore in their own time. I highly recommend this tour.
