Owner description: The Foundation welcomes visitors to explore daily life in one of Charleston's most exquisite dwellings. Located in Downtown Charleston near High Battery, the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, 51 Meeting Street, is widely recognized as one of America's most important neoclassical dwellings. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the National Historic Landmark in 1955, and the house served as the Foundation's headquarters for 37 years. Today, the interiors are restored to their original 1808 grandeur and surrounded by formal gardens.

“Floating Staircase”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014

The most fabulous feature of this home was the floating spiral staircase and the curved rooms on the side of the house with balconies. Even if you don't take the tour stop in and walk through the gardens - beautiful. Amazing history to the house and so glad we are able to tour it today!

Beautiful preserved home. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and displayed great pride in the restorations that have taken place.

“RESTORED EXCESS”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2014

This mansion has been restored to original condition. It is an amazing example of the excess of the wealthy Charleston merchant class before the Civil War. Imported hand-painted wallpaper, gold leaf decoration, formal furnishings. A good tour to pair with the Aiken-Rhett house which has not been restored. Buy a combination ticket at either property for a discount on both tours.

“Terrible guide”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

So disappointed by this. Herded into hot room after hot room and any effort to stand in the doorway where it was cooler meant being berated by the elderly guide ("I said gather round, no straying now") who rarely finished a sentence and kept starting anecdotes and then meandering onto some non related topic. Learned almost nothing about the beautifully restored house and endured 45 minutes of being treated like a small child. Very dull. Perhaps we were simply unlucky with our guide as the property is stunning.

“Great step back in time and history”

Great tour guide, Rudge Calhoun, who did a great job of describing what life was like at the time the mansion was built.
