Owner description: One of Charleston's architectural treasures, this historic mansion owned by George Walton Williams transports visitors back in time.

This house has been dubbed the OMG house and that describes it to a tee. The post Civil War mansion is the largest house in Charleston. It is owned by a collector who lives on the premises. The house basically holds his overly abundant collection of art and antiques. If you're looking for Victorian, leave no square inch uncluttered, this is the place for you. The pieces are all pretty stunning and amazing but the clutter of it all makes it almost campy. But if I had to do it again, I would. It was a lot of fun and the guides were a lot of fun and they obviously had a great admiration and love for their employer and the house he has brought back to life.

We toured The Calhoun Mansion after being told by a tour guide that "if you are only going to tour one home while you are here - this is the one to do." It was not what we expected (not a true "period restored" mansion) and on some levels was a disappointment. Not only did Calhoun not ever live there, but the mansion itself was not decorated in the style of the day in which it was built. It is privately owned and contains massive collections of the owners that have amassed for many years. There is not a thimble-full of space in the house that is not filled with something. It has a musty smell that got to us on a very hot day - the air conditioning in the home was not able to combat the outside temps in the high 80s. The gardens were awesome. The tour guide was informative but silly and some of the stuff in the house falls into the creepy category. We were disappointed with the tour price since we didn't get to see that many rooms. I probably would not recommend this tour to anyone unless they were intentionally looking for the unusual.

This mansion is still privately owned, but the tour covers rooms on the first and second floors and a mind-boggling array of collections and curiosities from all over the world. The house itself is very interesting, the gardens are pretty, but the eclectic possessions are a hoot. Make sure Tom is your tour guide - he shares lots of background tidbits and makes the experience so much fun!

I toured this home today, and found it to be the most amazing home I've ever been in. A very knowledgeable tour guide took us the through the home, explaining some of the history of the people and the furnishings. It certain has the Wow Factor! The gardens outside were wonderful also. You cannot take pictures inside (except in the foyer), but the place will form indelible pictures in your memory! A must see experience!

Mansion was beautiful, once you enter this home it is like nothing else. So amazing the architecture, different woods, moldings, staircase and the outstanding antique display through this home. We also enjoyed the outside gardens. You must put this on your tour.
