“Relaxing in Charleston”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

The Ashley Inn was the perfect place to stay for a long weekend in Charleston. Breakfast on the porch each morning was scrumptious and relaxing with wine and snacks in the afternoon after a busy day was wonderful! We stayed in an upstairs room with access to the 2nd level porch which was a great place to sit in the morning with a cup or coffee or enjoy wine and conversation in the afternoon before heading out to dinner. It's a bit of a walk to the historic district but not too bad and parking is easy to find if walking is not your thing. We would absolutely stay at the Ashley Inn again!

Room Tip: The 2nd level rooms with access to the porch are great!

The Ashley Inn was a nice place to stay while we wandered around the beautiful city. It was not too far from the peninsula, so you could walk around pretty freely. We rented a car, and there was parking, but be forewarned that it's quite tight. I wouldn't recommend anything larger than a sedan. The rooms were very clean and tidy.

We stayed in room 5 which boasted the shared terrace. We were excited to spend some time out there - but unfortunately the inn was almost fully booked and other (louder) guests made themselves quite comfortable out there. We did bring this up with the staff, but it's difficult to ask people to share "shared" space. The second floor was pretty quiet, but for the hospital and fire trucks throughout the night. If you don't sleep well in a more city setting, I might not recommend.

The breakfast food was pretty good, but not what I would call gourmet but still nice. The fruit and yogurt option was nice and light though.

The beds were spring mattresses, they were fine to sleep on.

In all, this was a pleasant stay and it was a great price for the pricey area. We just wish we had a little quieter stay, but in all it was still very nice for location, cleanliness, and value.

Room Tip: Stay in room 5 if you would like an room with the shared terrace

Here's the gracious living one hopes for in a great Southern town like Charleston. The 19th C Inn captures the feeling with this lovely restored home in an area away from the tourist-packed center. We took the Inn's bicycles out for a tour of the residential streets and down to the Battery on Charleston's waterfront. Two wonderful meals were enjoyed just a block or so away at the Hominy Grill and the Lana. Take time out on the "piazza," the locals' word for the porch that wraps around many of the old houses on the first and second levels. Very pleasant place for meeting other visitors. Owner was on hand to make sure everyone had what they wanted. A sister inn is around the corner, the Cannonboro. If the House and Garden Tours are running, be sure to sign up. This was a highlight of our visit.

We stayed at the Ashley Inn the last weekend of March. It was a very nice stay. The reason we decided on the Ashley was mainly based on price, full breakfast, free parking, and TA reviews. We were in room 5, which is on the west side of the residence. It was fairly quiet, except for the air ambulance as another reviewer noted, and it was very busy the first night we were there which was a Saturday.

We rented a car to drive to the beaches and plantations, but when we wanted to do something in the Historic District, we just walked, usually cutting through the College of Charleston campus.

The breakfast were good, with the southern eggs benedict probably being one of the best breakfast dishes I have ever had. The french toast was very good as well, only miss was the scrambled eggs and ham, but the grit cake was a first for my wife and I and we both enjoyed it. My wife, not being a sweets person, did not care for the crepes, and wish there was a third option of maybe just a basic egg and bacon breakfast for those who don't care for the main entree nor are fans of yogurt, which is available as an option.

Twice the owner, Barry, came by during breakfasts and shared some interesting historical stories about the inn and surrounding neigborhood.

The afternoon wine was also a hit for us, though we only did it twice.

If we go to Charleston again, I would not hesitate staying here again.

The Ashley Inn was my first experience staying at a B&B, so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but my husband and I had a pleasant stay there. The inn is in a more residential area, near the medical district, so it was very quiet except for the rare helicopter that I guess was going to/from the hospital. The home was charming, and our room was clean and decorated nicely. We stayed in the suite on the top floor, where there is only one other room.

There is an off-street lot, but parking can be quite tight if it's a full house. We didn't have a lot of interaction with the staff and other guests, but when we did everyone was fairly nice. Even though the inn isn't in the heart of the historic district, it was an easy walk to most attractions. And for the price savings compared to most Charleston hotels, the inn is a bargain!

The only thing that disappointed me was the breakfast--what we had was ok, but after reading the website and seeing all the tasty options that could be available, it was sad that none of those options were offered during our stay. I would have loved orange glazed croissant French toast, sausage turnovers with pimento cheese sauce or peaches and cream stuffed crepes with Canadian bacon. Instead our offerings were a grit cake with scrambled eggs or eggs Benedict. Maybe it was bad timing, but since our options were less exciting than what we had hoped for, we chose to eat elsewhere on our final morning.

Even though my stay was fine, and I would recommend the Ashley Inn to someone seeking a nice B&B experience, if I find myself in Charleston again I would probably try a different inn... there quite a number of choices out there.

Room Tip: Choose either the suite or room 6 if you want to be on the top floor and not have guests walking abo...

Thank You for the nice review!
I am sorry to read you weren't fond of our breakfasts! The southern breakfast with the Charleston pimento cheese and bacon scrambled eggs, crispy grit cake and homemade biscuit is usually a guest favorite. Had you eaten breakfast on Wednesday you would have been able to have the peaches and cream crepes!
I do hope if you return to Charleston you will try our sister Inn, The Cannonboro Inn.
Our Innkeepers at both properties are culinary trained and aim to please!
I look forward to maybe having your company again
Many happy returns!

We enjoyed a wonderful stay in this beautiful home. We were warmly welcomed and enjoyed the afternoon wine and cheese on the veranda after a day of touring. Great breakfast to start the day. The local restaraunts were excellent.

Spent just one night. Had a lovely room with door out to upstairs piazza. Wonderful to settle into a rocking chair after a long day of travel. Wine and appetizers set out in the evening. Nice breakfast in AM. Was nice to be able to park off of the street.
