We found this Inn on Trip Advisor and can verify that all the positive tips were true. We had a beautiful room with all the amenities including a fridge with nicely chilled bottles of water waiting for us. The concierge was very helpful all the way from arranging bike taxis and dinner reservations to helping us book our ghost tours. The hotel was perfectly located on Broad St yet very quiet and peaceful at night. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was lovely. Sherry in the evening and a fabulous cooked to order breakfast in the morning. We had the delicious shrimp and grits and hot sherried fruit with biscuits. They even gave us copies of the recipes to make at home. The staff and hotel were excellent and it was really fun to stay in such an historic location.

Room Tip: Gorge washing suite and Thomas lynch suite were large and beautiful-

The John Rutledge House is the place to stay in Charleston. It is centrally located with an outstanding staff and first class amenities. There is a cooked to order breakfast served in your room, the ballroom or the courtyard (our choice). Tea time at 4:30 included sandwiches, pastries and sherry or port wine. The concierge(s) were well informed and very accommodating. The innkeeper, Kathy, went out of her way to ensure that we were comfortable and content. We greatly enjoyed our weekend there, and would return again. There is a $12 a day parking fee which was the only minor issue.

Our stay at The Rutledge House was more than wonderful. The hospitality shown made us feel like honored guests. We enjoyed the historic surroundings coupled with its modern amenities. If we could have stayed all week, we would have. Our concierge, Damien, was welcoming and willing to do whatever we needed to make our stay more enjoyable. Thanks for enriching our experience in Charleston!

The Inn has all the ammenities of a 5 star hotel. It was warm and welcome and situated in the middle of everything. Other than my typographical error that cost us well over 100% of the room cost, we can boast that we probably stayed in the most expensive bedroom in Charleston. The room was nicely decorated in period furnishings with Federal memorabilia displayed in the common areas and on the walls as this Inn has a rich family and government service history. We enjoyed the gourmet breakfast in our room. Thank you for making my birthday and our stay at the John Rutledge House one to remember for many years to come. We highly recommend it.

My mom and I loved everything about this inn. The lovely breakfast served in the courtyard each morning, the amazing downtown location and the afternoon snacks and tea that we had each day while hanging out on the piazza watching the world go by. The room (#17) was super comfy as were the tempurpedic beds. Really one of the best B&B experiences I've ever had and my mom thought she was living quite large!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
