“Fantastic Time in Charleston”
Reviewed 2 June 2012

We stayed at the Inn with our dog and enjoyed the many dog-friendly destinations within the walking distance from the Inn. We stayed in one of the carriage houses which was cozy and private. The service is first class as is the breakfast. We will stay there again.

Room Tip: If you're traveling with a dog, you can only stay at the carriage house. Keep in mind that the...

The John Rutledge House Inn has the real feel of Charleston. I don't know why anybody would stay in one of the national chains when you can stay here. But the absolute best part of the stay is the staff they are very friendly and very helpful. The always introduce themselves and they make sure they know your name. I have stayed there a handful of times and I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Trying to find a true dog friendly fantastic location is not always easy to do. The Ashley Carriage House was highly recommended to us and our midnight arrival was warmly welcomed by the front desk staff. Beds are fantastic, size of rooms are great but most of all, the small number of rooms allows one to be given quick, undivided attention, get to know all the staff personally, and the opportunity to explore and see some of the other rooms like the room George Washington had lunch in. Room was large enough to have our kids with us. One will enjoy the stay whether its for 1 day or a week . The change in the breakfast menu is a southern treat that is served each morning in your room , the Ballroom or veranda. You pick and choose each evening before you go to bed and place your selection of what and where you plan to eat on your door handle. Unbelievable. Toby, our dog of 16 years, is already to go back to the John Rutledge House and have some more of his night time snacks . Something tells me Toby will be back sooner than later!!!!!!

Room Tip: Ask the to give the history of each room before you decide, all the rooms are unique, the carriage h...

I enjoyed my stay here very much. I loved the decor. Our room was very comfortable. Breakfast was pretty good and very filling. The factor that stands out is the service. There was a mixup with our reservation, which was not the hotel's mistake, but they upgraded us to a much better room at the same rate.

The afternoon assistant manager, Mike Bird loaned us his laptop in order to watch a webcast that we were unable to receive. Just a super young man. The accomodations were excellent as well.

Room Tip: Suite 8 in main house was very quiet and restful.

Wr stayed at the John Rutledge House for two nights with our small dog. We had a beautiful room in the Ashley Carriage House, and the bed was so comfortable! My dog enjoyed the treats that greeted her in our room upon arrival with a note attached. Breakfast in the ballroom was delicious and a lovely spot to relax. The location is perfect. I would definitely stay here the next time I am in Charleston.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
