John Rutledge House Inn
Ranked #4 of 62 Hotels in Charleston
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 August 2013

The John Rutledge House Inn is exceptional. The house was built in 1763 by John Rutledge, South Carolina's first Governer and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. If you enjoy history you will especially enjoy your stay. The house retains it's original design and is in very nice condition. Our room was big and comfortable. The staff is knowledgable of everything going on in Charleston and goes out of their way to be helpful. A delicoius breakfast is served where you choose; either in your room, in the garden out back or in a beautiful upstairs room that was often used by patriots, statesmen and presidents. The folks at JRH Inn go out of their way to be friendly and helpful. It's located on Broad Street, close to meeting and King Street where the best shopping and dining in Charleston is located. Once we parked at the hotel we walked everywhere we wanted to go. I HIGHLY recommend it.

My fiancé and I took a weekend trip to Charleston, SC last week. I had gone to college in Charleston and lived there for a few years after so I was very excited to go for a visit and show my fiancé all of my favorite things. We chose the John Rutledge House Inn because it is a Select Registry member (very elite inns) and we trusted this rating. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and realized we hadn't been given any instruction on parking. We called and were instructed to just pull into the loading zone in front of the house (this would have been helpful to know earlier on because Charleston has plenty of one-way streets and once we had driven past the inn had to make a large circle to get back). The woman at the front desk was okay, she was not to the caliber that I would expect from a place like this though. In fact we agreed that all of the people that worked at the front desk were not overly welcoming. We were seen to our room, which on the website said it was on the main floor, but apparently the main floor means in the Charleston version of the basement next to the kitchen. I went to the effort to find which window's rod-iron coverings could be opened because if there would have been a fire we would have been trapped. The room was very clean and the woman who had cleaned left us a very nice little note. The linens were beautiful and the bed very comfortable, but the bathroom was a bit outdated. Around the bottom of the toilet it needed new caulking and looked a bit gross. We went out to dinner and came back and the bed had been turned down, a lamp turned on, and little chocolates left for us. For breakfast we filled out our meal card that had to be placed on our door by midnight. We decided to have it delivered to the room (other options include the ballroom or in the garden). I chose scrambled eggs and bacon while my fiancé opted for the shrimp and grits. We were impressed by the large selection of a la carte options and beverages. I slept alright during the night, I am a very heavy sleeper and I was woken up twice due to noise in the kitchen.
The next morning a very kind man delivered our breakfast, literally on a silver platter, along with a news paper and placed it on the table in our room for us. The coffee and tea were wonderful, the biscuits were the optimum buttery blend of flakey, airy, and the perfect hint of crunch on the top. The entrees left a bit to be desired. The scrambled eggs were fine and the bacon was good, but they were nothing special. I had very high expectations for the shrimp and grits and they were not met. The grits needed quite a bit of seasoning and tasted like they had been cooked in water, and the shrimp were a little on the rubbery side. I felt embarrassed that this was my fiancé’s first experience with shrimp and grits because I always go on about how amazing they are. After a leisurely breakfast we went out for the day and had a wonderful time. We came back in the afternoon and napped before the tea reception at 4pm. The reception had hors d'oeuvres from the restaurant 82 Queen and they were pretty good. We had a nice time socializing with the other guests. A woman who I believe was the inn keep came in, I am not sure as she did not introduce herself, and asked everyone how everything was and if we needed anything. We enjoyed looking around the ballroom while we ate as it was almost a mini museum. That evening again I did not sleep very well again and was just anxious to get back to my quiet home at that point. Breakfast again, it was lovely having it in the room, but just did not meet our expectations. We went to mass next door at St. John the Baptist Cathedral, which no matter your religious affiliation you should look at because it is beautiful. When we went to leave, clearly as we had our bags, we walked up to the front desk and the woman thanked up for staying. I stood there for a minute awkwardly waiting for her to give us a receipt so I asked if I had to sign anything or if I could get a receipt and then she did. Overall we decided we would not go there again. For as much as we paid I did not think it was worth it. We agreed we were not sure how they were given a Select Registry rating.

Thank you spending your Charleston homecoming at the John Rutledge House Inn. I am glad that you had such a nice time in the city. We are happy that you chose the inn for its Select Registry affiliation, but are sorry that you left disappointed. Your feedback about our parking system is appreciated and we will make changes to ensure guest arrivals run as smoothly as possible. As evidenced by other Tripadvisor reviews, our staff is typically praised for their service and hospitality. I apologize that you were displeased with our front desk staff, but am thrilled that you received a warm reception from our Innkeeper. Thank you for detailing your breakfast experiences. We debuted a new breakfast menu this week which features some exciting new entrees. We have many room types, each with their own personality, so we appreciate your comments about our main floor accommodations. We also appreciate the feedback about your bathroom, and will take this into account as we work through some refurbishment projects this fall. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I apologize that your stay fell short of its expectations.

Sincerely, Richard Widman, Proprietor

We had a memorable time staying at the JRH Inn. The staff was great and extremely helpful. The room and the exceptional breakfast and central location made our stay special. All of the staff, from Sal who delivered our breakfast in the morning, to Tonya who serviced our room, to the great concierges: Katie, Cassandra and Patrice, made our first visit to Charleston an experience to treasure.

We just came back from a weekend at the John Rutledge House. Gracious staff, lovely food, beautiful residence. The city is filled with history and fine dining and the staff were well versed in the lure and allure of the city. This residence is definitely in of itself a destination for the city.

Room Tip: As chance would have it we got a room in one of the carriage houses which was perfect for a private...

All of the people at this inn were so lovely to us that it seems wrong to say anything negative. We had a wonderful experience there. The bed was very comfortable, the breakfasts delicious, the location wonderful. But what the website doesn't seem to clearly articulate is that all of the awards they won were back in the nineties and early 2000's. The room we stayed in on the ground floor was clean and comfortable, but quite dated. The bathrooms need updating. The chairs, rugs and window treatments do, too. So expect lots of wonderful service, but a 1990's feeling historic inn.

We stayed at JRH Inn for a tour in July, 2013. Normally, July in SC is hot and dry but not this year. The Inn has umbrellas available for guest to use. Breakfast is available in your room, on the patio, or in the ballroom which is a wonderful room with a balcony. On the balcony, you can enjoy afternoon tea. The facilities are the perfect balance between modern convenience and historic charm. Everyone was friendly, gracious, and very responsive to our requests. Truly a wonderful place.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor and even that room was great.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
