I have been staying at Rutledge House for years, and I always return. You just can’t beat it! I visit Charleston frequently, and have occasionally stayed at other venues when travelling with a group, but they never quite compare with Rutledge House for me. The Tempur-Pedic mattresses are always comfortable, I love the off street private parking and the courtyard is lovely. I also feel at ease with the staff, as some of them have been there for more than the 20 years that I have been going to Rutledge House. If you've never stayed before, give them a try the next time you're in town.

Room Tip: I prefer the carriage houses just because I like a little more privacy, but some people really enjoy...

We just returned from a wonderful stay at the Inn. We had two rooms in one of the carriage houses which we all loved. The rooms are beautiful, spacious and clean with comfortable beds. The staff, especially Michael, were very welcoming and helpful with sightseeing. We ate the delicious (especially the bacon) breakfast out on the gorgeous patio. The location is ideal. We all agreed we will return!!

Room Tip: We really enjoyed the carriage house rooms, but we saw a suite in the main house and it was so beaut...

This is a charming inn that is wonderfully located with helpful staff. However, I was surprised that they don't have in-room safes but they were happy to hold my valuables for me in the manager's office. There are lots of stairs with no elevator so beware.

We parked our car in this Inn's parking lot and never moved it. We and our dog loved staying in the quiet carriage house quarters in the rear and having breakfast either delivered to our room or being served to us on the lovely, uncrowded patio. The food was varied and delicious; selection was great. The concierges were quick to arrange bicycle cabs (great way to get around) and a carriage ride; they were most friendly and provided in-person wakeup calls each morning. This is a very dog-friendly establishment and is highly recommended.

Room Tip: The carriage house is quiet and close to the parking lot and patio.

We have just spent 4 nights in Suite 4 at the Rutledge Inn. This is an enormous 2 room suite with a very nice bathroom - large shower, no tub. The four poster canopy bed was extremely comfortable. The towels the nicest I had ever had anywhere. The a/c unit worked well. There is a refrigerator and each morning fresh water bottles are placed in it. If you need more they are in an ice chest on the back porch. Soft drinks are available at $1 each. This suite is right inside the front door with the concierge/reception desk right outside its door -- also the coffee. This was very convenient.

The inn arranged for us to be picked up at the airport on arrival and returned on our departure day. We paid $45 for each trip. The driver was very informative and helped us with our luggage in and out of the inn. The front door to the inn is actually up a flight of outdoor stairs - so the main level, where our room and the reception area are, is actually the second level of the building.

Although this room faced Broad Street and was right at the sometimes busy reception area we had no issue with noise. Occasionally we could hear someone talking out in the hallway when we were in the living room area, but never when in the bedroom area. Each evening you fill out a breakfast menu card and a very nice breakfast is delivered to you at the time you designate - in either your room, or the courtyard, or in the upstairs ballroom area.

The entire staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. They provided whatever we needed, helped with directions, and helped with dinner reservations each night. They were all great! The grounds are beautiful and I wish we had had more opportunities to sit out in the courtyard. It was a little cool and we had one day of rain while there.

Our only complaint about the inn was with the afternoon "tea time". We looked forward to this time as it was an opportunity to meet and visit with other guests. Also, by 4:30 in the afternoon we were ready to relax and have a bite to eat. They offered a selection of teas, sherry, and appetizers. The appetizers are supplied by their "sister" property and the restaurant Circa. We thought the appetizers were just plain bad. After the second day we told the young woman at the front desk. We understand she called over to the restaurant and the offering seemed a tiny bit better the 3rd and 4th day, but were still barely edible. All the guests were talking about this though and all agreed some cheese and crackers and some cookies would have been far better. We had planned to dine at Circa but after the "tea time" experiences we cancelled those plans.

This is a lovely, historic property. It is expensive. It is not as convenient as one of the hotels/inns down closer to the market area would be -- but we walked everywhere and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the city. Wish the inn had told us when we first arrived about the free trolley service the city provides. There is a trolley stop about a block from the inn. This free hop on/hop off trolley makes a large loop of the downtown area and is very helpful. Our last morning in Charleston we rode the trolley its entire loop. We wish we had done this our first day as it helps you to get your bearings.

This was our first vacation in Charleston. We had a great time, and the John Rutledge House Inn was a good choice for us.

Room Tip: Did not see any other rooms, but Suite 4 was extremely nice and convenient to front door, front desk...

Large rooms with great service. In the middle of the night, the concierge brought us 2 diet cokes from the vending machine when we called, and in the morning, the innkeeper knew who we were and wished us a happy anniversary! Breakfast in the courtyard was fantastic...try the grits!

Full disclosure: My family is in the hospitality business. So maybe my standards are higher than they should be.

However....

The John Rutledge House was a big disappointment. Since we had never been to Charleston before, we did a lot of research before choosing a place to stay. We chose John Rutledge House because it was a historic property, and frankly, because of the positive reviews we had seen, especially on Trip Advisor.

We did not have a good experience.

When we checked in we, were met by a concierge who was new and did not understand the various packages offered. We had paid a premium for the "Destination Charleston" package, which included a carriage ride and a choice of sightseeing opportunities. The one we wanted was a tour of Fort Sumter.

The concierge had no idea what we were talking about, and if we had not done research on our own, we would not have been able to take advantage of the extras we had paid for.

The room was OK...nothing special...on the second floor, so schlepping the luggage was a hassle (we did have help with the bags, however).

The second night, our room was not even readied for the evening (no turndown, breakfast menus, etc).

Overall, we found the staff did not go out of its way to be friendly or helpful. The location is also not the most convenient. There are better places to stay right in the heart of things in Charleston.

This B&B is expensive, and truthfully, we found it to be a bad value. My husband and I have traveled all over the world...so we know what a good value is.

My advice: If you're visiting Charleston, there are too many nice accommodation to pick from.

Skip this one.

Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed review of the John Rutledge House Inn. I’m sorry to hear you were displeased with your experience. I apologize for the service inconsistencies that you mentioned, as this is certainly not up to our high standards. Since your stay, we have spent time with our new staff member who was not familiar with our packages. I appreciate you pointing this out, and I’m sorry we didn’t know of the issues with your package before you checked out. Thank you again for your valuable feedback. We hope you will give the John Rutledge House Inn a second chance.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
