The staff was very professional and helped make our trip all we wanted it to be. They
put us in touch with the walking tour we wanted, before we arrived, a must for a first time visit, we made our walking tour reservation and had we not we would have found them sold out when we arrived. Very knowledgeable about all of the resturants and had menus for most of them, three great meals were the result. The house keeping kept our spacous, attractive room neat and spotless despite our efforts to the contrary. Very dog friendly and even had a welcome gift for Sammy The breakfast was very good and severed hot every time. The parking at the rear was convenient in a city short on parking. We hope to make a return vist next year. Best location to old city. You cannot do better than John Rutledge House Inn. Great B & B.

If you are looking for history, great service, and a amazing room this is the place for you. Our room was so beautiful and huge it was very had to leave. The staff was accomodating, and knowledgeable and could not have been more helpful and the hotel was central to all that we wanted to do during our stay. There are so many wonderful restaurants within walking distance of the Inn that you will have a hard time deciding on where to eat. The concierge was very helpful in giving us suggestions on sites to see. I am so glad that we choose this Inn for our first visit to Charleston and look forward to returning soon. Three nights four days are not enough to see all the wonderful sites Charleston has to offer.

My husband and I planned the trip to Charleston to spend time with a realtor to show us the area. Charleston has always beckoned me and I certainly wasn't disappointed, especially with The John Rutledge House. This Bed and Breakfast has perfected the meaning of the word "service". Beginning with our arrival at 11:00PM, we were pleasantly greeted by Wyatt who showed us where to park and helped us with our luggage. Our room was easily a place we could have lived in....permanently! The appointments were beyond belief - two fireplaces, lush robes and a bed that was so plush, we needed to use the footstool to climb up there. Don't tell the innkeeper, but I found myself taking a running leap and pole vaulting into the bed each night. The location couldn't be better. It's right in the historic district and within walking distance to all of the restaurants on East Bay Street and the fine fine shopping on King Street. The concierge staff is amazing. They juggle multiple requests from multiple people with efficiency and a smile. Yes, I'm returning to Charleston and I will be staying at The John Rutledge Inn.

This hotel is amazing, and the place to stay in Charleston. There are a lot of larger, "boutique" hotels in the area, but they are in much busier locations and Planters in particular is in the busiest tourist trap of all, next to a lot of nightclubs. The John Rutledge House Inn is right on Broad Street, a thoroughfare that is just right. South of Broad are the huge homes, and north of Broad are shops, attractions, and some of the best restaurants in the world. You can get anywhere in Charleston from here, although you might want to get a cab to go to the Ft. Sumter ferry or Marion Square. Very close to everything.

The hotel is gorgeous and the rooms are incredibly well furnished. The staff is lovely and very accommodating. If you want to really, truly experience the south and southern hospitality, John Rutledge is the place to be. Breakfast is great, and they have a nice little ballroom for afternoon tea and evening port. Rooms are very spacious, but if you do have a room on the first floor, you might find it to be a little noisy, as the front desk is right outside your door.

I couldn't recommend this hotel enough, and I am not surprised that it has gotten the reviews it has gotten. Charleston is one of the best cities in the world and this is one of the best hotels in the world.

I recently had the opportunity to stay at the John Rutledge House Inn. Prior to staying, my wife and I researched around town came across this hotel...need less to say, WE WILL BE BACK! From the time we walked through the door, greeted by the young man Damian, he was still training, but with the warm reception and magnificent aura he had... the rest is splendid history ! We stayed in the John Rutledge suite, right outside of the ballroom. And the evening tea was absolutely charming, and it would suffice to say, the entire staff was amazing. We will be back, hopefully for their Progressive Dinner, in December! If you are traveling to Charleston, do yourself a favor and stay at this beautiful property.

We thoroughly enjoyed the John Rutledge House. The room was beautiful. The staff were fantastic and so helpful with recommendations for restaurants and sights. We enjoyed the tea on the balcony overlooking the street after a long day of sight seeing. The highlight was the breakfast in our room each morning, which was fantastic.
Unfortunately the garbage trucks in the street woke us up early one morning as we were on the ground floor in the front. I am able to fall asleep easily, but if you are not, I would think a room in the back would be preferred.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
