“Wonderful wedding night stay”
Reviewed 23 May 2011

We chose the Vendue to stay in after our wedding based on all of the reviews here at Tripadvisor, and because it's more of a boutique hotel (smaller size, distinct atmosphere). We reserved a Standard King, but got upgraded to a Junior Suite. This had a huge comfy bed, a fireplace and a jacuzzi tub. Everything was very well-appointed, with the expected elegant, historical Charleston charm. Service was speedy, efficient and thoughtful -- bonus points for letting my husband check in early (he had to get to our wedding, after all!). Also, when his cab arrived to take him to the wedding venue, the driver just waited outside without coming in, and the reception guessed whose cab it was and called the room to let him know it was there.

When we arrived after the wedding, still all dressed up, it felt sort of magical to step into this beautiful and quiet place right by Waterfront Park. And again in the morning when we were escorted to a pretty, sun-lit parlor for our delicious Southern breakfast.

I wish we'd had more time to enjoy everything else the Vendue had to offer. I grew up in Charleston and never had any reason to stay in one of the fancy downtown hotels. As far as I'm concerned, this is now the only place I'd want to stay!

LOVED the Vendue Inn! Service was impeccable - all were friendly and accommodating. Rooms were a little old, but well-decorated and very clean - just like Charleston! The breakfast is excellent with several options to choose from. Location is close to everything great in downtown Charleston. Highly recommend and will definitely stay here again when I return!

This hotel is as advertised, very nice, fine service, average food. The major problem was that our room was near a street light, no darkening shades , and the light came through the blinds all night, keeping us awake.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is DARK at night if you care.

Intimate surroundings. Loved the sitting area where coffee is served. Great homemade cookies put out every night at 9. The beds are very high, but they supply step stools to get in. Really great mattresses. If you need a desk area ask which rooms come with them. We were in a 'superior' room and there was no where to put our laptops,.
The staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful.
We'll definintely stay again.

A lovely inn right in the French Quarter and within easy walking distance of the old historic district, with friendly and generally helpful staff, nice breakfasts and Hors d'Oeuvres, but quite expensive.

We chose this inn because we were travelling without a car and wanted to be in a part of Charleston where we could just walk out of the inn to see the historic areas. When travelling we usally stay in cheaper accommodation, so we can holiday for many weeks, rather than just a week or two and this inn was quite a lot more expensive than our usual. However, accommodation in Charleston does seem to be quite expensive (beware of hotels which claim to be "downtown" but in fact are in the more modern part of Charleston, a taxi ride away from the historic centre).

It's true that the area is quite noisy and since we were at the front of the building we appreciated the effective double glazing. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. There was a flat screen TV in the room and an en-suite bathroom with bath/shower, wash basin and toilet and was kept clean during our stay.

I'd have to say that at times the staff in reception were absent for short periods of time, or sometimes seemed overloaded and we were not told when our room was ready, but had to ask a couple of times - not really a big problem. Otherwise service was friendly and efficient and the inn stored our bags after we had checked out on the last day, organised a taxi in the late afternoon and let us have coffee in the lounge area until it arrived; as small but very welcome gesture.

Breakfasts were fine, with a nice choice of dishes and specials and there were nice Hors d'Oeuvres and wine in the late afternoons in a pleasant dining room. There were also cookies and hot milk in the evening, but you might need to be there as soon as they were served to avoid missing out! We didn't use the restaurant or rooftop bar (which is not our sort of thing anyway) so cannot comment, except to say that the picture on the website does makes the best of the rather limited views of the harbour!

It was wonderful being so close to the historic area, because, even though we were tired on the evening of our arrival, we were able to walk around the histric area, which we certainly wouldn't have done if we had bee in a tourist class hotel further out. If you are without a car, as we were, this is a good place to stay as the free circular-tour trolley bus stops right outside the inn, which is great; some locations are quite a distance to walk (such as the ferry-terminal for Fort Sumpter). In fact a car is a bit of a dissadvantage here.

We had trouble getting a Wi-Fi connection (perhaps our PC was the problem) but were able to use the PC in a small lounge area for internet and email, which was fine.

So, to sum up, this inn is quite expensive and might dissapoint some guests, but the popularity suggests that they know their market. We certainly enjoyed our stay and would consider the Vendue Inn if we ever get back to Charleston in the future.

We had a great experience at the Vendue Inn. First of all, it's located right in the middle of the downtown area and you can walk to everything. Plus, the room rates were less than other hotels I found in the same area. It's a great old building with lots of charm. We chose a King room with fireplace. The room size was fine for just us, but it would've been very tight if we brought the kids and needed to add a portable crib. The bathroom was beautifully decorated.

Each morning, we had a delicious full breakfast (included with our room rate) served on white table cloths. The 4pm wine reception was a welcome touch with a few light appetizers to tide you over until dinner. The employee pouring the wine remembered our wine preferences from the previous day. It's obvious that their employees have been well-trained.

The only real complaint I had was the mattress--way too soft for my taste and I didn't sleep well either night of our stay. After we returned home, I got an email survey from the Vendue Inn in which I mentioned my discomfort with the mattress. The owner of the hotel wrote to me promptly apologizing for that and suggested that, if we come stay with them again, that we call ahead to see if they can improve the mattress for us. Wow! I don't think I've ever gotten a survey from a hotel before, much less a personal response offering to correct it. Bravo!

Love the Vendue!

Booked three nights at the Vendue Inn on the basis of Trip Advisor reviews and location. The location is terrific. All staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The included breakfast was very good as was the afternoon wine and cheese hospitality offering.

We were assigned a ground floor room in the building across the street from the main hotel. Both buildings are historic structures. Furniture and décor are accordingly traditional but, frankly, were tired. The wood floors seemed dirty although I think the housekeeping was generally good. The bed was comfortable and bed linens and towels were good. Building and room door locks were keyed and notably the front door security was lax and room door keys are prominently marked Vendue Inn and show room number hardly comforting should you happen to lose the key. As well, door locks were loose and in questionable repair. There were no in-room safes (a real shortcoming when people regularly need to safely store laptops, cameras, travel documents, etc.). Included wi-fi worked well.

Self-parking was close by in a civic facility. It seemed reasonably secure.

Overall, the hotel’s location and service are commendable, but it definitely needs updates and security upgrades.
