We arrived with such anticipation of a few great days in Charleston, this Inn had been highly recommended to me. When we walked in the door, it was beautiful, but the heat inside was unbearable. The poor guys at the check in were sweating as we were. I asked about the A/C and was told it's a very old inn and it's not real good. It was in the 90's outside but I never expected it to almost be that in all the common areas. Our room was decorated beautifully but extremely small. Especially for the price. Our room A/C worked good along with the ceiling fan. Bathroom very large but definitely needed some updating. The 1st morning my husband showered and went to pick up breakfast and some coffee for us. When he got back, he was soaked from sweat. He said several other people complained about the breakfast areas being hot, but nothing was done. We went to go to the evening reception and it was the same. Just getting a glass of wine made us break into a sweat. We ended up going to the rooftop bar for a drink to be able to get a breeze to cool down. We didn't even attempt to go back for the cookie reception as the hotel was still hot. We went straight to our room. The next morning I asked if they had any fans at the breakfast area, and we were seated by a portable cooler. It helped make it tolerable, but I could see other guests sweating. Needless to say, the only time we spent at the inn, was in our room. The rooms were the only cool places. I would definitely not recommend staying here in the summer. Other old buildings didn't seem to have this problem. My sister stayed here in winter and loved it. If you're planning on visiting in summer definitely reconsider stay here.

We appreciate it whenever a guest takes the time to write comments and provide feedback as to what we have done well and what we can do better. Negative feedback is the hardest to take as we truly strive to make each guest’s stay truly exceptional; but it is only through those comments that we are able to learn from our mistakes and make certain that they are not repeated.

This guest speaks of extreme heat in our lobby and public areas. Certainly our hotel is old (we prefer the term historic). It was constructed well before the commencement of the civil war, but our systems and equipment are relatively new and well maintained. Our records don’t show an air conditioning problem in the lobby in June and we received no other comments from guests (we request feedback from all of our guests) relating to areas being uncomfortably hot.

We have racked our collective recollections trying to determine just what might have occurred here and we find ourselves in a bit of a quandary. We did have a compressor fail in our restaurant mechanical system in June. This may explain the cooler referenced in this guest’s comment. We needed to have a part sent to the hotel by overnight courier; so repairs were not as expeditious as we would have liked (they took approximately two days). But air conditioning in all other public areas has operated without fail in all other areas throughout the summer.

The Vendue Inn was the perfect hotel for a magical 17th anniversary week in Charleston. The location is divine -- right in the heart of the city, a block from Waterfront Park -- and the service was impeccable. Whether it was the full-service Southern breakfast, the fruit-infused water, wine and appetizers in the afternoon or the cookies and milk at night, the Southern charm of the place was palpable. We didn't need to rent a car because we could walk everywhere or ride the free Vendue bikes up and down the Battery and throughout the city, enjoying the people and views. At night, after dinner, we relaxed at the Rooftop Bar and then fell asleep in a comfy King-size bed. The perfect conclusion to one perfect day after the other...

Best three things about this hotel: 1) Location: it is one block from the water (closer than most hotels in historic dist), two blocks from City Market, and has a number of great restaurants within a block or two. It is on a quiet street. Our room was on the first floor, front of the hotel, facing the street, and there was no noise. 2) GREAT roof-top bar/restaurant!!! Live music til 9:00, open til midnight. Great views and cool atmosphere. Great way to relax after a full day of walking around and exploring, then you can just stumble to your room after. Good food for lunch too. 3) The complimentary breakfast. Great selection! Belgian waffles, eggs any style, bacon, sausage, etc. Plus full wait service! Delicious, great service and...FREE!
The staff is exceptionally courteous and helpful. Complimentary wine & cheese between 4 & 6 PM is a great way to start off one's evening.
Cons: not many. Shower was so so-hard to get the water temp just right. Floor tiles were cracked and uneven. Pretty normal stuff for an inn in an older building.

We stayed at the Vendue Inn for 3 nights on the recommendation of others and were very impressed with the hotel. The room was clean and well furnished, and the bed was comfortable. The staff was helpful and pleasant, and provided excellent recommendations for nearby restaurants. We took advantage of the complimentary wine each evening, and also spent a lot of time on the rooftop bar, which is a great spot for watching the sun set over the city. Complimentary breakfast is served (not continental/buffet) and excellent. Overall a great value given the rates on online travel sites.

We stayed at the Vendue Inn for a long weekend. This is a great, very modestly priced Inn. The location is right in the heart of downtown historic Charleston with great restaurants and shopping just a hop, skip and a jump away. The rooms are very clean, comfortable and nicely decorated. The inn definitly has a "Charleston" feel. Make sure to take advantage of the breakfast, wine and cheese and cookies. The breakfast is very good, especially for not costing any extra! The servings are plentiful and I think that there were about 8-10 different things to choose from. At the wine reception each night there were a choice of 3 wines, get there early and make friends with the host and they will gladly keep refilling your glass! I would highly recommend this Inn to anyone!

I surprised my wife with an anniversary trip to Charleston. I had heard the Vendue Inn was the place to be for romance and luxury, and we were not disappointed. In the heart of historic downtown Charleston, we had many activities at our fingertips, while being filled with the amenities the Vendue Inn constantly provided. We felt like royalty staying there, which is why we will always come back.

The Vendue Inn was the best experience of our vacation! After driving all morning and spending about three hours at Ft. Moultrie, we arrived in Charleston, map & directions in hand hot & tired! As we turned onto crowded Vendue Range, we saw the door to the Inn, it opened and out came our rescuer - a doorman with luggage cart asking if we were checking-in. He quickly checked a list from his pocket and said the magic words - "welcome, I'll take care of your car"! And thus began our fantastic stay in Charleston!

Our check-in was so quick it was unbelievable and the doorman explained everything - the ever-present ice water in the lobby (complete with packets to use on your face & neck!); the breakfast room/reception room; the dining room; the roof-top bar. We were quickly taken to our room - small but very nice and comfortable.

The evening reception was very generous - free-flowing wine and cheese & snacks, very nicely served and endless. Our first night a hotel employee was greeting people and handing out small make-up bags & samples from a local store. She also facilitated conversations between "strangers" helping us all become instant friends.

The Concierge was delightful - full of suggestions of what to see and places to eat. A former tour guide, he answered all our questions about the city and even helped with our next stop - Savannah.

Breakfast was another surprise - the Inn's Internet site does not do it justice! By "hot entree" they really mean your choice from a endless menu plus special f the day! The food was delicious, presented beautifully with attentive service.

The roof-top bar was also a nice touch - although limited in view, nice to end the evening gazing at the stars.

The Inn parked our car which we never used until we left. The costly $18 a day was high but, in a big city, worth every penny.

In short - this haven of Southern Charm with breakfast & afternoon reception was the best place we stayed during our vacation! We'd recommend it to anyone!
