Owner description: There's no better way to see historic Charleston than from the vantage point of an Old South Carriage. Family owned and operated since 1983, Old South Carriage Company offers fully narrated hour-long tours by licensed guides wearing the Confederate uniform with the Red Sash. Come to our English-style stable at 14 Anson Street, just 2 blocks from The City Market and meet our friendly and professional staff. Reservations are not necessary as tours depart every 20 - 30 minutes throughout the day. A ramp leading to a platform makes boarding easy. Old South Carriage Company uses French Percherons and Belgian Draft horses. These sturdy employees vacation at Sugah Cain, the owner's 65-acre plantation on John's Island. For 2-3 months annually, these beautiful horses are free to run in large pastures or leisurely graze under century-old live oaks. Tours operate daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 (DST) 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (EST). ~Look for the Red Sash~ Our symbol of a quality horse-drawn carriage tour of Charleston, South Carolina.

My wife and I opted for the general carriage tour verse the smaller private carriage based upon price. $44 for a general tour and $125 for a private tour.

Unfortunately you can be squeezed in with 14 other people which can get tight.

The city of Charleston dictates the carriage route and as luck would have it we got the western route which is not very scenic. Glad we did not pay $125 for it.

Our driver was good and explained the sites along the route.

Good option while in Charleston but for the same money you can get a private walking tour and learn more and see more.

$22 per adult, you get a 90-120 min carriage tour around Charleston. The carriage sits about 16, so you'll share. This attraction is highly dependent on the tour guide and his/her style and knowledge. Joshua, our tour guide, told us about testing that was required to be a tour guide and the standards are high. He was hilarious (he doesn't get dental coverage, but Bill our horse does). Very entertaining. Be prepared to wait a bit between your ticket purchase and your ride - that needs to be made clearer. Our wait was 45min and we toured the local famous market in the meantime. I highly recommend this tour! Although there are stairs into the carriages, I think I saw a lift to accommodate wheelchairs - but you'd better ask if you need.

This was my first carriage tour of the city. The carriage was full (11 adults). Our tour guide, Mirriam, had worked as a guide for 2 years. Our four-legged guide for the day was a Percheron named Freddie. As you leave the carriage loading area Miriram was handed a card with a number, indicating which tour route she was to take us on. The tour headed down Church Street, across Meeting St and down along the historic waterfront Battery area. I did not gain much historical knowledge about the city from this tour. The main focus seemed to be sight-seeing more so than giving visitors real information about the city. The tour took about an hour.

Be aware-when you climb aboard ANY of these tour rides, you have absolutely NO CHOICE as to where in the city you will go. Each tour operator pulls up to a kiosk where they are assigned the tour route...we were assigned to tour #3 - which took us far & away from the center of old Charleston - to the jail, housing projects & other non-interesting sites. We were NOT taken to the Battery, Rainbow Row, waterfront, etc. - the more traditional areas to tour. This is Charleston's way to avoid clogging their historical areas with horses & tours - an admirable idea, but to a newcomer to Charleston, VERY disappointing!
Skip the carriage tours & take a walking tour - much more interesting, $22 to visit the outskirts of Charleston - not happy, but, again, not blaming Old South, just bad luck at the kiosk

We took the carriage tour today and loved the history behind the city. Our guide Mike was both very informative and funny! He made the trip exciting holding on to every word he said. I would recommend this tour to everyone from young to old!
