Owner description: There's no better way to see historic Charleston than from the vantage point of an Old South Carriage. Family owned and operated since 1983, Old South Carriage Company offers fully narrated hour-long tours by licensed guides wearing the Confederate uniform with the Red Sash. Come to our English-style stable at 14 Anson Street, just 2 blocks from The City Market and meet our friendly and professional staff. Reservations are not necessary as tours depart every 20 - 30 minutes throughout the day. A ramp leading to a platform makes boarding easy. Old South Carriage Company uses French Percherons and Belgian Draft horses. These sturdy employees vacation at Sugah Cain, the owner's 65-acre plantation on John's Island. For 2-3 months annually, these beautiful horses are free to run in large pastures or leisurely graze under century-old live oaks. Tours operate daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 (DST) 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (EST). ~Look for the Red Sash~ Our symbol of a quality horse-drawn carriage tour of Charleston, South Carolina.

There are so many carriage tour companies in Charleston SC, that this review is meant to steer you to the best in my opinion, though not always the cheapest.

Old South Carriage Company was recommended to us by a local we had contact with and they did not steer us wrong. However, we are quite elderly and did not want to be treated like "cattle" (4 in one seat, really cramped) so we reserved the private tour carriage which is a comfortable 2 forward/2 back configuration.

Our guide, though he had to take the luck of the draw, made everything interesting, throwing in some humor, some history and was always there with a correct answer to all questions we came up with. We would pay the higher price if we should visit again just to be able to enjoy the luxury of taking pictures easily, asking questions easily and riding comfortably.

Our guide Dustin and horse "Steve" were awesome. We went on tour #3 and the company had no control over that but Dustin did an amazing job making the best of the sites given we went through a rough part of town and even saw a fight on a public playground. If you choose a carriage tour def choose Old South and ask for Dustin!!

As everyone has mentioned you don't get to chose the route you take we got taken on route 2 which went along Meeting street down to the waterfront and past the houses along their then back up Meeting Street again past the Calhoun Masion. Again if your lucky you don't have to wait long between the time you buy your ticket and the time your carriage leaves.
We had a lovely lady called Janice who took us around the town. She was extremely entertaining as well and informative to. Our horse was Amos and he was quite a character we all thought Janice was joking when she said they didn't have a good friendship. It was proved when he decided he wanted to do rear up!! Very entertaining and got plenty of giggles from all on board!!

I must say a good trip worth doing I can't say which is the best company to go with but this was the first one that came up when I researched tours in Charleston!!

My wife and I opted for the general carriage tour verse the smaller private carriage based upon price. $44 for a general tour and $125 for a private tour.

Unfortunately you can be squeezed in with 14 other people which can get tight.

The city of Charleston dictates the carriage route and as luck would have it we got the western route which is not very scenic. Glad we did not pay $125 for it.

Our driver was good and explained the sites along the route.

Good option while in Charleston but for the same money you can get a private walking tour and learn more and see more.

$22 per adult, you get a 90-120 min carriage tour around Charleston. The carriage sits about 16, so you'll share. This attraction is highly dependent on the tour guide and his/her style and knowledge. Joshua, our tour guide, told us about testing that was required to be a tour guide and the standards are high. He was hilarious (he doesn't get dental coverage, but Bill our horse does). Very entertaining. Be prepared to wait a bit between your ticket purchase and your ride - that needs to be made clearer. Our wait was 45min and we toured the local famous market in the meantime. I highly recommend this tour! Although there are stairs into the carriages, I think I saw a lift to accommodate wheelchairs - but you'd better ask if you need.
