“Great hotel”
Reviewed 8 November 2012

I have stayed at several hotels in Charleston including French Quarter and Harborview which are rated higher on Tripadvisor. I don't know why. Both the room and service is superior to any other place I have stayed in Charleston. Couple that with the Penisular Grill and it's hard to find a better spot to be in.

Dear Scbwino,
Thank you for your review, comments, and sentiment. We are proud to be consistently ranked among Charleston’s finest. However, we believe you may have pointed out the best compliment…. Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill are truly the best small hotel and restaurant in the City. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated by all of us.
THANK YOU!

The Planters Inn had been recommended to me and more than met my expectations both before arriving and during my visit. You could not find a better place to stay in Charleston. From the warm and welcoming ambiance, the superb quality of the food and service and the very personal interest and attention from the concierge staff in helping me plan special sightseeing and restaurant reservations based on my OWN taste and interests. My room had all the appointments and comfort that I was led to expect. The hotel management went out of their way to make me feel welcome, I so enjoyed the charming library/living room and I was in walking distance to virtually every place I chose to wander. The Planters Inn represents the finest of services expected today with the charm and courtesy of Historic Charleston. I would definitely wish to return to this hotel in future. It truly epitomises what Charleston is supposed to be!

Your comments and sentiment are truly appreciated by the entire team at Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill. It is rewarding when a guest is pleasantly surprised by our service, ambiance, location, and amenities, however it especially noteworthy when we live up to the recommendations of your friends and our past guests. You have offered the many readers of TripAdvisor a thoughtfully worded description of our southern hospitality at work. Charleston is a city unlike many and we are thrilled you were able to experience the Planters Inn. Please join us again whenever you are ready for another getaway.

The Planters Inn is absolutely lovely. The Plantation King room was spacious, beautiful, and extremely comfortable. Request to stay in the main building. The staff goes out of their way to please you. This is definitely the place I will return to on my next visit to Charleston.

Room Tip: Request a room in the main building.

Stayed here for two days. Excellent location on North Market Street near many top-rated restaurants, includiing their own Peninsula Grill (top-notch food and service). The front desk staff helped us arrange a very good walking tour and made great suggestions on sites to see while we were in town. Very beautiful garden area.

Room was very spacious (I see there are some commenters saying rooms are small so maybe it is a function of which room you reserved - $$$). Very clean with great in-room amenities. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: Rooms facing North Market Street quieter because of the slower-traffic.

Dear EBY_NYC,
We appreciate your thoughtful comments regarding the spaciousness of our guest rooms. Planters Inn offers a wide range of room selections within our 64 rooms. In comparison to many Charleston properties and especially in relation to some bigger city hotels, we offer some of Charleston’s most spacious and comfortable accommodations. Our high ceilings and historic Baker collection furniture combined with our unique collections of period pieces and various fine furnishings make for a truly Charleston experience. Thank you for recognizing our staff and the award winning Peninsula Grill. We are sure to see you again on you next trip to Charleston. A short direct flight from NYC!

The only downside to this hotel is the price. It's very high. However, relative to the other hotels in the area, it's only slightly more expensive, and the difference in the level of service is quite noticeable. This was my 4th trip to Charleston in the past 3 years, and the service at Planter's was by far the best. I got a reservation to a difficult-to-reserve restaurant before I even finished checking in. The cleaning staff was very friendly, and does an amazing job with turn down service and cleaning in general. The room was a little smaller than I expected, but it was quiet (especially given the location of the hotel), and quite comfortable.

A special thanks goes to the wonderful folks at the front desk: Bradley, Tristan, Alex, and Kara. I can't recommend a hotel more than this one in Charleston.

Room Tip: If you can get an inner courtyard room on the 2nd floor, you'll be happy with the lack of noise.

Beautiful room. Worthy of a picture. Maybe a bit small, but considering age of building, excusable. We stayed in grand king. Bring your iPod, there's a good docking station on night stand. Bring your own wine and h'orderves. There's an ironing board in the closet. Set it up there and use it like a kitchen counter. It'll fit. This hotel is perfect for walking tours of city. I got a map on line with facts and it was useful and interesting.
Have the mussels at Hank's and breakfast at Toast.
I'm sure the Peninsula Grill was fabulous, but not interested in spending a fortune on slow meal. Coffee in lobby in AM......not strong enough for me, but better than in-room bathroom coffee.

Room Tip: I bet they're all nice.

Dear Debbie Lombardi,
Our charming guest rooms offer the ceiling height, character, and charm of an old world inn with all the modern conveniences of a world class Relais & Chateaux property. We are pleased to read you enjoyed our property, rooms, and location in the city’s center. Although you were able to enjoy the mussels at Hanks…you must return for another visit to experience the culinary delights of Peninsula Grill and treat yourself to another night at the Inn. We look forward to your return.

We were traveling with friends and looked forward to our stay at Planters Inn. The wait staff was pleasant and helpful but the hotel lacked something. The rooms are ok but we could hear the people upstairs over our room. This really disturbed our sleep and they we not being loud it was just standard noise. We could hear them walking and the shower etc. There are no special amenities and really not worth the price.

Room Tip: Good luck. They make the room decision, not you.

Dear Martha H,
Thank you for acknowledging our terrific location in the center of Charleston’s famed city market and our helpful and pleasant staff. It is unfortunate you did not have a restful evening during your recent visit. We reviewed your reservation booking and were surprised to read of your displeasure with your Governors Suite. It appears our efforts to upgrade you to one of our finest and largest accommodations with 600 square feet, private bedroom and full living area with a working gas fireplace were simply overshadowed by an uncharacteristically noisy guest from above on your second night. We are known to offer some of the finest and most luxurious accommodations in the city and regret your experience was less than satisfactory.
