If you liked the Inn at Little Washington in rural Virginia, you'll love its big city cousin, Planters Inn, in Charleston. I have stayed at both, and the similarities are striking. Superb service, gorgeous rooms and common areas, and an "Inn" atmosphere, as opposed to a big city, hotel feeling. Examples. At the Inn at Little Washington, when you arrive you are ushered into the parlor for a complimentary glass of champagne and a snack, and when you leave you are given a cold bottle of water for your journey. At Planters Inn, located right in the center of the historic district, a valet takes and parks your car, delivers you bags to your room and welcomes you in a parlor that always has coffee, ice water, ice tea, or cider. The staff is exceedingly friendly and outgoing, and helped us with every aspect of our stay, including walking tour and restaurant reservations. Our room (405), a Plantation King overlooking Meeting Street was amazing. The room was 30 feet long with a 4 poster, very comfortable bed, three windows onto the market and Meeting Street, a large flat screen TV, desk, upholstered chairs and beautiful furnishings. The bathroom was perpendicular to the bedroom and was 20 feet long, with semi partitioned areas on one side for the closet, sink, bathtub and toilet. Everything was sparkling clean and fresh, a perfect oasis in which to relax after a long day of sightseeing and eating. We had a chance to discuss the Inn with the General Manager on multiple occasions while relaxing in the parlor, and he was understandably proud and exited about this property and its future. We also compared travel notes with other guests in the parlor, something we would rarely do in a large hotel. The Inn at Little Washington has long been recognized as one of, if not the top Inns in the US. Planters Inn has been recognized as one of the 50 top small hotels in the US by a top travel magazine. They share many of the same attributes, but the attention to detail and fine restaurants are overriding attributes of both. One last example. As guests of the 64 room Inn visited the parlor to relax and mingle, an attendant came in every 5 minutes or so to ensure that empty coffee cups and glasses were removed, and the complimentary drinks and snacks refilled. A small detail, but notable and appreciated. In short, plant yourself at Planters Inn next time you visit Charleston. You won't find a better Inn, or example of southern hospitality, anywhere.

Room Tip: The web site is very user friendly and allows you to view and assess many different types of rooms at the Inn. When I called the reservation desk at the Inn, the clerk was very helpful in directing me to the exact type of room I was looking for, in terms of size, quietness, etc.

The rooms, location, service and welcome were excellent, for our 3 day stay here. It was the perfect location with-in easy walking distance to almost all things in downtown Charleston. The rooms were spotlessly clean with amazing beds and linens. The nominal charge for the great breakfast was worth every penny and the staff, both at the door, front desk and housekeeping were all very friendly and pleasant.
Thank you

The inn justifies it's Relais & Chateau affiliation. Our wonderful room with fireplace was very comfortable. Hotel staff are just outstanding in service and happiness. The Grill is a happening place so don't even think about not making a reservation.

We came to Charleston to visit family for the first time. We loved the hotel from the minute we arrived. It was a little cold outside and the fireplace was so welcoming. As our room also had a fireplace that was wonderful to have. It's location was perfect to sightsee Charleston, the historic Planter's Inn seem to go hand in hand with the area. We had to use our car several times to visit the family members and Hunter was wonderful and never counted how often we needed his services! Always so polite. Beautiful hotel that we would love to visit again. Thank you to all that made it so special.

We had a great stay at the Planter's Inn for a long weekend get-away. After a less than auspicious start to our trip because another hotel, which we had originally booked, neglected to mention that they were under construction for the weekend, we switched to the Planter's Inn and couldn't have been happier. After a bad night's sleep and worse service at hotel number 1, we showed up at the Planter's Inn and immediately knew we'd made the right choice - we were greeted by a professional staff who were thoughtful and welcoming, and the welcoming feel kept up all weekend. The room was beautifully appointed and had a real sense of history and little touches like different snacks each night for turn-down service and tasty cider in the lobby went a long way, too. When our flight back to New York was cancelled for snow, we looked at each other and thought "Charleston in 60 degree weather at the Planter's Inn or New York in a blizzard? That's a no brainer" and booked for an extra night.

The front desk staff, especially Sam, Jesse and Tristan, were a big help and struck the right balance between professional and friendly and were able to answer all our questions quickly and helpfully (and you could tell were interested in their guests when, for example, after we came back from dinner at a popular new restaurant, they asked us what we liked so that they could recommend it to other guests).

When I give five stars, it's five stars for its price range and type of hotel - it's not the Four Seasons or an opulent resort palace (if you think "five stars" in that sense) but rather a high-end, quality hotel that's accessible and welcoming to everyone, that's more friendly than formal and strikes the perfect balance in doing so. All around, highly recommended. Plus, you can order the Peninsula Grill's coconut cake from room service and I have to admit, it's worth it - I was skeptical but it's a great (and huge - think two days' worth, for two people) slice of cake.

As noted above, our trip started on a bad note due to a bad experience at another hotel; as soon as we arrived at the Planter's Inn, we knew things were looking up, and the rest of our trip was great, thanks in large part to the staff here.

Dear GrinitiFiBar,
We are thrilled to read we were able to turn around your Charleston experience by offering you exactly what we are known to provide; excellent service in a charming and unpretentious setting that is uniquely characteristic of historic Charleston. I’m pleased our individual team members were able to make you feel at home and offered a lasting impression that warrants a personal mention. Weather created havoc for many trying to arrive to Charleston and offered others, like you, the opportunity to extend and enjoy another day in this terrific city. Your comments are greatly appreciated and will be shared with the team that makes the Planters Inn the charming and lovable property you experienced and enjoyed.
All the best until next time,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager
