The Planters Inn is well located for exploring Charleston. The staff, especially Jake, was knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed a gracious dinner at the Peninsula Grill, and of course tried the legendary coconut layer cake. Despite this, the hotel is pricey for what it offers, and at the prices charged, a quite bit more could be expected of the rooms and amenities.

Dear Robin G,

Although we may not be the least expensive option for lodging in Charleston; we are confident we are one of the best small boutique hotels in the city and by far the best hotel and restaurant combination in the historic district. We are pleased you enjoyed our prime location, our attentive and friendly staff and your meals at Peninsula Grill. Thank you selecting Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill to enjoy your stay in Charleston.

Kind Regards,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager

Planters Inn is a lovely hotel, as a Relais Chateau property I expected a bit more, especially for the price. There were several "little things" which added up to a less that five star experience. When we checked in with our confirmation in hand the front desk gentlemen keep looking at the computer screen with a troubled look in his face, then had to consult with his manager, which read to us: oops we don't have a reservation for you. The manager came over and when I asked about this, he said they had openings. Not a good start. Our room faced the street, not optimal.
The room was beautifully decorated, which is why I chose to stay here from the photos. Once in the room we found a lack of horizontal surfaces on which to put our personal items. Lack of drawer space, the bathroom was nicely done and quite large, no place to put personal products for two people. The shower had a skimpy shower curtain, water went all over the floor. In a property of this caliber there is no excuse for this.
There was no in room coffee or tea making set up. When I called the front desk for a tea kettle, they misunderstood this request, when I called again I was told they don't have this for the rooms, but other guest have requested this as well and thy are looking into it. Not a good answer, the correct answer would be " of course we will send it right up". The location is perfect, it is a lovely property, but the extras are missing.

Room Tip: Away from the main street

Dear Karen,

We apologize for the uncomfortable feeling you experienced upon arrival as this is far the normal warm southern hospitality we are known to provide our guests. Our efforts to welcome guests “into our home” is a principle found in each and every Relais& Chateaux property. Thank you for your suggestions and comments; as we will definitely take them under consideration as we continually upgrade our guest rooms and public space throughout the property. We hope to see you again on your return trips to Charleston. May we suggestion a larger Plantation King for your next visit; a very popular choice with our guests that may provide the little extra space you desire.

Best Wishes,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager

My husband and I stayed here in the fall last year (late review, sorry!) and could not have been more pleased! The location was perfect, central for walking everywhere we wanted to go; especially the market across the street - easily take loads of find right back to our room! The room service was great - breakfast in bed on vacation is perfection (their in-house granola is amazing!). I loved that the light switches had dimmers, warm lighting instead of just constant bright or dark. The turn down service in the evening was lovely and all the staff within the hotel are extremely courteous and helpful. The only thing that would have been nice is the ability to have coffee/tea in the room directly. They have a full service station in one of the front living rooms, but sometimes you don't want to go all the way to the front of the public space for a cup of tea. We look forward to being able to stay here on all future trips; it is romantic, central and the perfect nod to luxury without being snooty. Thank you for a lovely anniversary!

We stayed at the Planters Inn from 4/27/14 to 5/1/14. We were joined by friends who also stayed at the Inn at the same time. The Inn is ideally located in the center of Old Charleston directly across the street from the Market. It is a short walk to some of the best restaurants in Charleston and houses one of our favorites - The Peninsula Grill. The Planters Inn exudes Southern hospitality and charm. Every staff member is pleasant and eager to make your stay a memorable one. The hotel features a sitting parlor which always has coffee or tea and little bites to eat throughout the day and night. It is a good place to meet or wait for a taxi, tour bus, or your car. The rooms are quiet and beautifully decorated in traditional Southern style. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are well stocked with amenities. Rooms are serviced twice a day with fresh towels and bed turn down which includes a little something sweet to eat. Breakfast room service was reasonably priced, on time, and quite good. Front desk staff were well versed in all of the things to do in the city as well as providing excellent directions and arranging for transportation. They were always eager to help. Every request was handled promptly and efficiently. They even helped recover a lost ear ring in the restaurant. The only suggestions I would offer would be to provide a small refrigerator in the room and provide morning room service orders without having to ask for them daily. We highly recommend the Planters Inn and look forward to staying here on our return to Charleston.

What a relaxing hotel. From the minute you walk in, the whole setup exudes calm, understated elegance. The location is stunning, right across the road from the market, an easy walk to any of the beautiful old Charleston streets and houses. My room was in the newer section of the hotel with a huge balcony outside, very inviting with table and chairs to just sit outside and soak up the atmosphere. More on that later.
I like the way the hotel has combined the modernity you need in a hotel with the old colonial building. It works very well. Yes, it passed my mould in the bathroom test with flying colours. I had a good continental breakfast, the front lounge with its complimentary deliciously refreshing lemonade (I made a pig of myself with the exquisite little savoury biscuits!) invited a quiet sit-down with a newspaper. And I very much liked the service, true Southern Carolina politeness and hospitality, nothing was too much trouble.
The only thing I did notice from my room which was at the end of the building was the background noise from what I assume were chillers of some sort. Not overly intrusive, but there nonetheless, but intrusive enough to deter me from sitting outside my room to enjoy the balcony.
It's a pity I could not have stayed longer, because the Planters Inn is the ideal spot from which to savour Charleston's charms. A worthy Relais & Chateux property.
