If you enjoy visiting cemeteries for their historical purpose, this is worth the visit. There are actually three cemeteries side by side. We found the Sisters of Mercy who died in 1854, while nursing the citizens of Charleston inflicted with Yellow Fever. A peaceful place of meditation for those who died on the Hunley. Soldiers who died during the Civil War and the first Police Officer who died in the Line of Duty, in Charleston. A lot to see and explore but bring Sun Screen.

This is such a beautiful cemetery, so much history can be found here. There’s also a sadness that comes from seeing all the children’s graves. It’s a nice place for a quiet and peaceful walk.

This place was memorable with such a step back into history. We really are thankful that we visited the cemetery and paid our respects.

After going to see the Hunley, we decided to visit the cemetery to visit the graves of the crews. Amazing! The old oaks, Spanish moss hanging down, the ornate mauseleums and headstones. The cemetery is located in a marshy area and there are small islands with roads that connect them across the salt marsh. Very scenic and steeped in history. I’ve been to Charleston dozens of times over the years. I’m so glad that I finally took the time to visit!
