Owner description: Middleton Place is an 18th century rice plantation and National Historic Landmark comprising 65 acres of America's oldest landscaped Gardens, the Middleton Place House Museum and the Plantation Stableyards. The Gardens reflect the elegant symmetry of 17th century European design. Sculpted terraces, parterres, and reflection pools inhabited by swans are highlights of their intricate design. Rare camellias bloom in the winter, while vibrant azaleas blanket the hillside above the Mill Pond in the spring.

Much of the Charleston area is a garden in early spring. Middleton is spectacular. The gardens are always beautiful,

“A beautiful plantation”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

The history of Middleton Place is fascinating. The home is very beautiful, and our tour guide was excellent. The gardens are exceptionally lovely, beautifully designed and carefully maintained, with many opportunities for photos. Plan to spend at least half a day here, and be sure to have lunch at the excellent restaurant. It isn't an inexpensive place to visit, but definitely worth the price, and no more expensive than other historic plantations in the area. Don't miss it if you are in the area.

“Very interesting place”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

The largest plantation that we visited, though a little pricey, large beautiful area, huge house to tour. Not being from the area, was surprised to see alligators on water edge - really cool in my opinion! We spent half a day walking the gardens and touring the house and still there was more we could have done. You can choose different tours at the ticket booth but the most economical would be the "All Day" pass which we did not purchase due to not willing to spend that much time. Overall this plantation is beautiful and well kept. A recommended visit.

“Antebellum plantation”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

There's an entrance fee to get on the grounds. If you want to see the house or have a carriage ride, it costs extra. Personally I find that annoying. Having said that we spent a pleasant afternoon around the gardens and visiting the animals, especially the cute lambs. There's a restaurant on site which offered a fine buffet lunch. The house was originally 3 buildings, only one of which is still standing and that has been modified along the years.

Well worth a stop; the gardens are beautifully laid out and well-maintained. Loved learning about the history of Middleton and the family who lived there.
