“Comfort Suites West of the Ashley”
Reviewed 21 May 2014

Thank Goodness for this hotel! My wife & I were planning our 1st trip to Charleston & really wanted the 'Old City', 'Historic District' experience. Hotels down in the District were very pricy, so we shopped around, checked other Trip Advisor reviews, & decided on the West of Ashley. Turned out to be a real gem! True, you are NOT waking up in downtown Charleston proper, however the very easy, short drive there is not worth the expense difference. The Comfort Suite is immaculate, someone is definately 'steering the ship'! Wonderful staff did everything they could to welcome & take care of our needs. This was while the hotel was fully booked every night we were there. Charlene treated us like family, a high point of the day was seeing her behind the front desk; where we'd exchange "Good Mornings". She managed that smile & pleasant attitude EVERY time & usually while checking someone in or out, answering the phones, and giving directions to town simultaneously! The rooms are recently updated & attractive, well appointed, & roomy. Our King bed was very, very comfortable. Climate control worked efficiently & quietly; we needed heat & A/C during the same stay. We were on the Rt. 17 side of the building & traffic was barely noticeable even during weekday "rush hour". Swimming pool is clean, well maintained, & surrounded by windows, giving it a well lit; outdoorsy feel. The included breakfast is better than most at this level of hotel. Eggs, fresh waffles made by you, yogurt, good coffee, tea, & juice choices, and several types of bread to toast. Breakfast cereals, danish, donuts, & other pastries round out the menu. It can be crowded in the main area where breakfast is served, but the hotel opens one of their conference rooms to accommodate the overflow. Not a problem. If I had to sum it all up in 2 words, I'd say: Staff & Cleanliness. Stay there & spend the $$$ you'll save on Shrimp & Grits ... you won't be sorry!

Once again while in Charleston we stayed at the Comfort Suites. We had stayed here two years ago and we enjoyed another great experience this time as well. The property is well kept up both inside and outside. The staff are very friendly, very helpful, knowledgeable and know how to treat the guests to make you feel appreciated. We would especially commend Charlene with whom we had the most interaction of any of the staff. She is a delight and is always looking to to be helpful and always has a smile and a kind word. The room was spacious with a sitting area which was a great benefit after being out all day. The room and the bathroom were clean and the bed was comfortable. While in a high traffic area, there were no problems with any traffic noise. The breakfast is the usual fare that you will find in most hotels these days. Hot and cold items and it was well stocked. The location is convenient to downtown Charleston as well as other areas such as Mt. Pleasant and Sullivan's Island. All in all a great place to stay with great people.

It was a good place to stay. No complaints. It isn't in the historic section and doesn't have a view. It is actually right off a highway, but we don't want to pay twice what we would have to pay just to stay in the historic section. The beds were comfortable, and the room was nice. It is a little dated, I think, but very adequate.
The first night we could hear the people talking in the next room, and maybe one could hear the cars going by, but the AC works well, and we use a white noise app on our iPhone, so we slept well.
The free breakfast is fine, again not extraordinary. The usual cereal, sweets, coffee, fruit. They have scrambled eggs but no meats. The coffee was good. I think "value" is the key word here. Clean, comfortable, and good value.

We had an excellent stay here. The price and the ease of access from any direction make it a great alternative to staying downtown where prices are much higher. On the day we visited attractions in downtown Charleston, we parked our car in the parking facility by the aquarium for the whole day for $16 and were able to go on the Fort Sumter tour (~ 3hr) and Grayline's 1.5 hr historic tour, as well as walking around the historic district. This was the only day we spent downtown as we visited attractions in the surrounding area as well. Besides being a good location for our needs, the hotel was clean and the service, excellent. A nice breakfast with a couple of hot items as well as the standard pastries, juices, fruit, etc. Would definitely stay here again.

I was in room 411. A jacuzzi room. It was very large, but not divided like a real suite. Bed OK, pillows firm and soft - could have used a laundering - I switched pillows from other bed which were cleaner. Large bathroom with shower (jacuzzi was in room.) Large dressing/entry area.
Coffee maker in room made poor coffee (but I found if you put coffee bag in the hot water and let it steep longer, the coffee got better.) Great coffee in lobby all day long, with cookies brought out in the afternoon.
Frig didn't have freezer. Lots of electric outlets for all those contraptions we bring along.
Great staff. Minor glitch by the person (working as receptionist, reservations, operator and concierge all at once, so I don't blame her) who set my wake-up call for 4:45 instead of 6:45 the first day. Note to management: Have person repeat wake up time to guest to make sure correct.
Basic breakfast items plus scrambled eggs and sausage in pan, and yogurt, cream, and hard boiled eggs in a frig. Note to management: Have your fruit vendor deliver bananas that are edible and not totally green. (These were out only on my last day. Otherwise they had been yellow.)
TV remote very basic- no sleep timer on it, which I like. Over 100 cable channel selections. Comcast local TV guide available online. Free wifi with login code given with room key.
If you have appointment in old Charleston in the morning, allow extra time for traffic. Due to all the traffic lights and cars on 17, it takes a while to get to the river, but not too bad.
Lots of shopping options nearby.
Make sure you google map directions as only one entry to driveway and if headed south on 17, you have to go around the block on street before hotel. There is no left turn into drive.
See my 36 photos for more room/hotel details. I would stay here again.

Made our stay for Mother's Day most enjoyable!!! Top notch all the way! Charlene at the Front Desk was a true delight and showed extra attention to my mom throughout our stay. Would definitely recommend this hotel and will most definitely return!

The size of the room was good - it was clean - I liked the layout of the room - the staff was courteous and very helpful - breakfast was good. The location was good - we weren't in the expensive historic district - but it was an easy drive to get there. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.
