The men and women who served then and now should be admired. The staues are great. The park is quite nice!

The Battery is at the very tip of the Charleston peninsula where the Ashley River and Cooper River come together to make the Atlantic Ocean as Charlestonians like to say. There is a copper plate embedded into the sidewalk to mark the spot as well as pointing out Fort Moultrie, Fort Sumter, and Fort Johnson. The Battery was a defensive position in the revolution and civil war. Batteries of cannons were placed along this point.

Now it's a beautiful park with oaks, grass and paths. A few cannons, artillery balls and statues are sporadically placed around the park. A seawall walkway allows a pretty view of the two rivers and ocean. We stayed in an Airbnb that faced the battery. Everyday there were strong breezes that made it a wonderful place to walk when it's hot and humid. We also saw bridal parties taking pictures almost everyday of the week. In some cases, there were two and three at the same time. It's very picturesque.

If you are trying to plan out a trip to Charleston, I'm not sure I would take the time to head down to the tip just to see this park. It's cool, but not worth the extra effort. On the other hand, if you want to see beautiful old homes, doors and planters, then head down to the tip and pair this park with your visit. Besides being beautiful, you will see pelicans, dolphins, sailboats and other activity out on the water.

The Battery walk gives you great view of the Charleston Harbor and the sails boat on it, not to mention the delightful breezes so welcome on a hot summer day. The mansions lining the avenue are amazing to look at and the game to pick out your favorite one is entertaining. White point Gardens was disappointing. The shade was welcome but otherwise not very pretty. In its favor, the trees are huge and the population of Night Herons were fun to spot.

There’s the view of Fort Sumter and the monuments. There’s the paths and the sprawling oaks. But then there’s the pirate history, which when read aloud had some Elementary aged children speculating about exactly where that buried treasure is anyway. Parking is free and closely available. Stop by for a half hour.

Love the battery . . . we have been going here since we were kids. It's a great place to stop off and visit if you're in Charleston for vacation. OR if you're a local, wonderful place to come relax, have a picnic, read a book or just enjoy the ocean breezes.
